Welcome to the late Ken Kesey and son Zane’s magic bus Further

Florida visitors Sharon St Clair and husband Chuck King rolled into Gloucester about four weeks ago. By chance, they stopped into Charlie's Place and bumped into the Merry Pranksters. This trip, made by son Zane Kesey, replicated the journey from CA to NY made by renowned author Ken Kesey (One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, starring Jack Nicholson) in 1964.

Fifty years later, on September 24, 2014, they came to Gloucester, and had breakfast at Charlie’s Place https://www.facebook.com/pages/Charlies-Place/111697215533360. My friends were there…

Sharon photographed the Furthur crew at breakfast. She and husband Chuck gave them their table for the bus crew. Ken Kesey’s son Zane sits center waving his hand. Sharon and Chuck leave tomorrow for home. I got to know what wonderful and generous people they are… and like me, they’re adventurous. Fair winds and smoothe seas, my friends forever.

  2. I now understand why Gloucesterites (?) travel with cameras. One never knows what will happen or what is around the corner. The Merry Pranksters were a fun group, and as you said Fred, made one want to hop on the bus (and I know you would have). We had a fantastic four weeks in Gloucester and it was especially wonderful seeing so many GMG folks. We leave with many Gloucester treasures and memories. Fred, you are a prince, no, a King of a guy and we enjoyed every minute with you! Take good care and we will see everyone next year!

  3. Fred,

Well done and there were a bunch of these on the roads in the 60’s and I love the history you presented here. Classic International talk about a stiff stick to shift painted up the Hog Farmers group had a bunch in NM also in those days and paraded them through El Rito or Santa Fe National forest aspen alley or black forest…I was a whopping 13-14 then going across country in a bus ourselves not quite as Colorful but had the Mass Marquee as it was a converted highway bus that had the route of the Cape Cod area Buzzards Bay, Woods-Hole, etc

Going from Ma to out West was quite adventure indeed!

Thanks For the memories of years gone by 🙂 Dave & Kim
