An hour later when the gopher recovers from the fright and pokes her head out …
Gopher: “Wow. Hey Heron, how high up are we?”
Heron: “Oh, I would say about 800 feet, maybe 900.”
Gopher: “You wouldn’t be shitting me now would you Heron?”

Wow, that is crazy! A couple years ago my nephew and I were watching an egret in the marsh behind GHB. It caught a frog and had a big lump going all the way down that long, slender neck. I think my nephew was a little shocked.

Just watched a great blue heron tonight fishing in Rockport. It’s eating that gopher was a surprise for me too. Never knew they ate anything but fish…Gross but very interesting. Thanks for the post!

Saw a blue heron swallowing an eel…took about 10 minutes to get the eel oriented. On the way down the heron’s neck moved in eel-like fasion for another 2-3 minutes. What a digestive system…rivals the snake’s…
