Did You Know? (Addison Gilbert Hospital)

That Beverly and Addison Gilbert hospitals have been named among Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals in the U.S.?Ā Ā Ā The Thomson Reuters 100 Top HospitalsĀ® study is annual, quantitative research that identifies the hospitals with the best facility-wide performance.Ā  At the heart of this research is the 100 Top Hospitals National Balanced Scorecard, a set of measures that evaluate performance excellence in clinical care, patient perception of care, operational efficiency, and financial stability.Ā

I had my first experience with Addison Gilbert Hospital on Monday.Ā  After many years of not having health insurance, thanks to Kim Smith who told me about the Gloucester Family Health Center, and Marissa Alves, who helped me through the Commonwealth’s paperwork process, I now have coverage.Ā  I had an appointment with my new PCP, Candace Thompson, who is a wonderful doctor – very sweet, friendly, attentive, took the time to listen, ask questions, make recommendationsĀ and made me feel totally at ease and cared for, as did Erica, her nurse.Ā  The women in the lab were efficient, friendly, and I never felt the “pinch”.Ā  Radiology and Registration were the same, and there were no long waits anywhere.Ā  Even the fellow patients I met and spoke with were at ease and friendly.Ā  We on Cape Ann are so lucky to have Addison Gilbert, and I hope thatĀ the new affiliation with Leahy will only make it stronger, and that all existing staff will be retained for as long as they choose to stay.

Simply Stunning Work in Progress

Juni Van Dyke and Maggie Rosa discuss design elements of the Eastern Point panel.

Yesterday I had the joy to meet Juni Van Dyke and several members of the Rose Baker Senior Center art class. Juni and her students are working on a project titled Gloucester: A Community of Neighborhoods. Each fabric panel measures approximately five-foot square and illustrates through iconic imagery characteristics unique to Gloucester neighborhoods. The banner’s design in it’s entirety, along with the individual artist’s whimsical designs and choice of fabrics, is utterly captivating and a vibrant visual feast.

Maggie’s extraordinary interpretation of the archetypical Beauport window. The window’s mullions frame a collection of antique glass in varying shades of lavender to deep grape.

This is not the first grand scale project of it’s kind created by Juni and the fiber artists at the Senior Center. The banner titled From Sea to Shining Sea: Celebration of the American Landscape thatĀ is currently on view at the Senior Center lunchroom was also exhibited at the Lexington Heritage Center for six months, and it measures nine feet in height by thirty feet in width.

Lois Stillman’s elegant rendition of theĀ birch treeĀ clump at Niles Pond.

Eastern Point panel detail with Mother Ann and butterflies.

I am honored to have been invited to create a butterfly for the Eastern Point panel although I think they have it beautifully covered. The whimsical swirl of butterflies in the upper left corner was created by students at the Eastern Point Day School and the charming and detailed Monarchs fluttering around Beauport by Maggie Rosa.

Lois stands in front of the panel she designed. Note her genius interpretation of the Abram Piatt Andrew Bridge, replete with cars (click photo to see larger version) and including Nichols Candy House. Her deep love of trees is apparent in the exquisitely skilled manner she has stitched and pieced many different species of trees created for the panels.

As the work onĀ Gloucester: A Community of Neighborhoods unfolds we’ll bring you more stories and detailed photos about this vibrant and captivating work of art in progress–there are simply too many beautiful tales to tell in one post!

Who’s counting and why?

TMax3

Why is T-Max counting steps?Ā  Maybe you can figure it out by watching part 2 in gimmesound’s 5 part series on walking Gloucester’s music scene.Ā  If you missed yesterday’s video, you’ll want to watch it to find out what’s going on.Ā  See it here:

Great music around town tonight – get out and enjoy it ~ you can see the full list here.

So You’re Tom Brady…

You spend 24/7/365 saying All The Right Things to the media. Every single day when they try to bait you into saying some disparaging remarks about opposing teams or percieved malcontents on your own team you ALWAYS without fail brush aside comments and diffuse any possible media shitstorm.

And then moments after a devastating loss in the Superbowl with the entire world watching your Victoria Secret All Star Supermodel drops a bomb saying something to effect that her husband "can’t throw AND catch the balls"-effectively throwing his receivers under the bus and undoing all the goodwill the guy has built up with his classy image year after year.

When the shit hits the fan and the Boston Sports Media does its usual hysteria laden rants against you, do you give her a pass because she’s a smokeshow Supermodel or do you flip out?

Dave Sag’s Blues Party to host Mr. Mike Mele. This Thursday night @ The Rhumb Line

Ā Thursday – 9:00 to 12:00 ~ Dave Sag’s Blues Party

Dave says,

Ā  Let’s welcome Mr. Mike Mele back to the fold. Poor Mike: he feels neglected cuz he hasn’t been around much since he’s so busy with that organ grinder trio he’s so proud of. Must be tough taking care of a capuchin monkey: what with the laundry and the pellets and all….
Ā  Some years back Mike and I had a nice brunch gig going: played a lot of grueling standards and gargled our way thru many obscure bluesy tunes. Hardly anybody blew their cookies! Now he’s back and I’m gonna try and trick him into doing a few of these neglected gems. watch him squirm!
Ā  But seriously, folx, Mike’s a great player, really boffo, and a boon to add to our increasingly expanding Augean Stable. Come czech him out!
Ā  Backing him upĀ  will be our tonsorally-challenged madman of meter: Mr Steevie Chaggaris, on drummmbs, and ,of course, Greg T. and myself complete the circle. See you there!

More Edward Hopper All Around Gloucester

Catherine Ryan writes:

Thanks to GMG, here’s a nice note and a family photo sent in to Joey in response to the pictures of EDWARD HOPPER ALL AROUND GLOUCESTER.

Hi Joe – we corresponded awhile back about Cigar Joe and my grandparents who lived on Gould Ct.

IĀ mentioned that my great grand parents – Joe Ciaramitaro – not your Joe J – had lived in the Haskell House way back…. I saw the Hopper painting of the Haskell House in your feed … to complete the circle – here’s aĀ wedding picture from my great aunt Catherine, taken on the stairs at the Haskell House in 1945.

And since you know Gould Ct., there’s a great Hopper painting of the Unitarian church that looks like it might have been painted from somewhere on Gould Ct.

Enjoy. Steve Auditore

I revisited Gould Ct; five others mentioned that vantage point, too. Please share more stories or locations (more than 90 and not all known!) about Edward Hopper all around Gloucester.

The Last Schooner

Schooner Andrew & Rosalie, Gloucester, circa 1935 Alice M. Curtis/©Fredrik D. Bodin
TheĀ lastĀ Gloucester-built fishing schooner was theĀ Andrew & Rosalie, which was constructed and launchedĀ in 1930Ā at Burnham’s Railways (in the area now called Harbor Loop). With a 20 foot beam, her deck was 92 feet long and she carried 4,600 square feet of sail. The schooner was renamedĀ American EagleĀ in 1941 by new owner Captain Ben Pine. In 1984, after 53 years of hard fishing with the Gloucester fleet, she was purchased and rebuilt by Captain John Foss for the passenger trade. Berthed in Rockland, Maine, SchoonerĀ American EagleĀ can be seen in Gloucester every September for the Mayor’s Cup Race, which she’s won eight times.Ā http://www.schooneramericaneagle.com/

My favorite Boston Cinematographer Rick Macomber’s “Life In Singapore”

Rick writes-

Having traveled to Singapore many times now and having produced a few shorts on this beautiful city in Southeast Asia, this time I thought it would be fun to interview some friends to see what their take is on the place I’ve grown to love. Since I was not "working" while I was there, I only brought out my camera and gear while eating and hanging where the cool kids hang, I have also thrown in a few shots from previous trips. I wish there had been more time to shoot, but that would not have been fair to the folks I was there to see.
I hope you enjoy it!

GMG Product Test- AEROSHOT BREATHABLE ENERGY DEMO

So for those of you who know me you know that for 8 months of the year I wake up for work at 3:45AM 7 days a week to get down our commercial lobster dock.

It’s a grueling year doing a lot of repetitive work and it’s very physical as well.  So when I get home I’m uusually tired.  Getting home usually between 6-7PM eating dinner and then trying to stay awake to spend some time with the family.

The Mrs and I try to get out for dinner once or twice a week and it’s nice to not be falling asleep in my plate.  So I drink lots of coffee and if I’m really really dragging I’ll chug down a red bull to try to help me stay awake past 9PM.

Anyway I saw this online ad for Aeroshot breathable energy and it seemed intriguing.  Instead of having to consume the liquid and sugar of the red bull take a couple of huffs of the AEROSHOT.  On the AEROSHOT website they had a twitter page so I followed it.

Then while on twitter there was a promotion for a free sample so I signed up.  It came to the house about a month ago but last night we had a dinner party to go to and I was pretty beat so it seemed like a good night to give it a go.

In the video above you can see the packaging and how the system works.

Here are my findings after using it last night:

It was very easy to use, you pull it from each end so it opens up and then put it in your mouth and when you close it a certain amount of what seemed like a crystalized powder entered your mouth where it dissolves and gets ingested into your body.  you don’t get all of it with one burst,  I did about 5 or six inhales.

You immediately get a taste of lime followed by a sharp bitterness.  I had just brushed my teeth before so the taste wasn’t all that great to me but I think I would opt for something a little sweeter for a flavor instead of lime.  A berry flavor would probably counteract the bitterness better than lime.

Within a couple of minutes I felt a rush and my heart rate increase.  It was very noticeable that my alertness was heightened and it was more than the rush you would get from a red bull, 5 hour energy or drinking an espresso.

The alertness and heart rate increase lasted about 2 hours.

Foxy

As we move into late winter and early spring, be on the lookout for young foxes in their cozy dens amid the granite boulders. This one lived at our last residence in NY, but I have seen one from my kitchen window here in Gloucester.
