Essex Coastal Scenic Byway
Travelers along the 85-mile Essex Coastal Scenic Byway will experience the best of coastal New England: historic seaports, colonial era farms, village and city centers, and a wealth of period architecture. Set against a rocky shoreline and The Great Marsh, New England’s largest salt marsh, the byway traverses thirteen historic communities on Boston’s North Shore.

People needed to hammer and saw – Lanes Cove Fish Shack Saturday
This Saturday we will be putting down rough sawn 1 by whatever flooring and replacing the worst spots of sheathing. This is where we need more volunteers than the core group of professionals that have been doing heavy framing and masonry work. Bring a hammer, Saturday morning around 8 or 9.
Hello,
My name is Claire and I was wondering if there is a way to ask the people of Gloucester for photos of the Fisherman’s Institute and anything before URBAN RENEWAL I grew up on Main Street and have a few that my Dad took and would love to have more. I really appreciate the work you do .Your Photos are great!
Thanks for listening,
Claire
Hi, Joey. I’ve met you several times at the GMG parties. For a couple of years, I had artwork on display at Fred Bodin’s gallery on Main St. I have since opened my own gallery, and I was hoping you would put it on the blog. It’s in Rockport, but I’m from Gloucester, so I’m hoping it will still qualify for GMG! It’s called The Art Nook, and it’s at 6R Dock Square. We just opened yesterday, and we’re planning an Opening Reception on Saturday July 14th at 6pm. We have work by local artists including myself (Kathleen Miller), Stefan Mierz and Jean Byrd, among others. It’s definitely going to be an eclectic gallery with original, unique fine art! Here’s the sign template and the basic info if you can put it on the blog, maybe next week before the opening? Please let me know :). Thanks so much!! – Kathleen Miller

Chamber Auction On Tap!
25 TH ANNIVERSARY CAPE ANN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE ANNUAL AUCTION
The Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Auction celebrates its silver Anniversary on Thursday, July 19 at 5:00 pm at the Essex Room, a proud member of the Woodman Family Tradition, 125R Main Street, Essex, MA. This annual gathering brings bidders from across New England in hopes of going home with the marquee item of the auction. Headed up by co-chairs Carol Morse and Tony Corrao, the auction buzz is humming along with items coming in from many Chamber members who have generously donated.
“This is one of the premier social gatherings on Cape Ann,” said Carol Morse, who has been a staunch supporter of the auction for many years. “Last year was such a success on one of the best nights we had all summer. The bidding, the social interaction and catching up with friends was so wonderful to see.”
Corrao, owner of Precision Roofing of New England, has also been a huge part of the auction for many years and is very successful in securing donations, both on and off Cape Ann.
“Being involved for so long, I have had the pleasure of meeting so many people year in and year out,” said Corrao. “They are always willing to give and that makes me feel great, being a native son of Cape Ann. Our members’ generosity is something special.”
Red Sox tickets, wonderful artwork, tickets to the North Shore Music Theatre and an African Photo Safari are just tips of the auction iceberg with plenty of other prizes up for bid. For a complete list of items up for auction, visit http://www.capeannchamber.com. Tickets for the 25 th Anniversary Auction are $25 in advance or $30 at the door.
Looking to make a donation or attend the event? Contact Tim Burton at tim@capeannchamber.com or call him at 978-283-1601.

Life, Liberty & what?
Not “property” as John Locke had written. Nope. Jefferson wrote “the pursuit of Happiness” and the Congress went along with him, even though they made many other edits, much to his chagrin. This was a truly revolutionary idea — and still is.
What’s even more revolutionary (to me anyhow) is that we celebrate the adoption of the Declaration of Independence as our official Independence Day holiday. This is NOT a day on which we won our independence through a battle, or a war, or signed a treaty, or formed a government, or elected anybody. This is the day that our Founders defiantly declared that the Colonies were going to “dissolve the political bands” with Great Britain and become independent states. In short, this is not the day we won any independence through any means other than by saying so on paper. And it meant a certain death sentence for everyone who signed that paper, which was treason. Now that’s brave. Few people today exhibit anything close to this kind of bravery.
But back to happiness. Everybody pursues happiness in different ways. One of mine is through music. So, as promised, here’s the set list for yesterday’s award-winning GMG float featuring almost all local music. (In case you hadn’t guessed, it’s the spectacular local music that makes me happy!)
The list is in alphabetical order by song title and doesn’t necessarily represent the only good local music, just the best local music suitable for a prarade:
Big Chief – Henri Smith
Blind Knowledge – Willie Loco Alexander
Blues Brothers’ Review – Cape Ann Big Band
Fat Belly BBQ – T Max
Gloucester Till The End – Earl & Arch
Goodnight Romeo – KBMG
Let’s Get It Started – Black Eyed Peas (not local, but requested)
Harley Rider – Allen Estes
Love Light – Fly Amero
Madeline – Pete Lindberg
Not With Ya Hands – Allen Estes
On The Dark Side – John Cafferty (performing with Orleans in August)
Reap What You Sow – The Distractions (That’s me on drums)
Red Solo Cup – Toby Keith (not local, but requested)
Samsara – Inge Berge
Stand Up – Tom Hauck
Still The One – Orleans (Fly Amero’s band)
Take Another Look – Bandit Kings
Two Different Paradigms – Ned and the Big Babies
Where’d They Go – Allen Estes (Official Song of Gloucester)
Wire – Will Hunt
You Me and Mary – Chelsea Berry
Do You Know?
Where this is located?
I took this photo last year, so the flowers are different this year, but he is in the same place.

Praise to Mayor Kirk and the City of Gloucester
The photo with the Man at the Wheel shows the Horribles Parade route, at 8:00 this morning, less than twelve hours after tens of thousands camped along the boulevard to view the parade and fireworks. The entire route is spectacularly clean as is the Fiesta fairgrounds. Thank you Mayor Kirk and the city’s public works departments for working so hard to keep our downtown looking sparkly clean during the back-to-back events of Fiesta and Independence Day celebrations!

Thursday night blues party @ The Rhumb Line to host Evan Goodrow 9:00 – 12:00
Dave says,
This week we feature slugger and home rum king, Mr. Evan Goodreau, our wily purveyor of groovy times and caustic guitarrberations. A busy guy, we’re glad to have him back. Always a vibrational experience. He always raises the stakes, then pounds them back into your heart! Lots of energy!
To keep the blood coursing will be our Irish Ace of Pace, Mr. Benny Benson with his muscle-bound ticking of the clock. Of course, Mr. Greg T.and myself will be standing by to cover any eventualities. Eat your wheaties!
