Did You Know? (Record Breaking Striped Bass Caught)

That Tony Gonzalez caught a record breaking striped bass this morning off the rocks behind the paint factory on Rocky Neck.  Tony said he’s been fishing this spot for 32 years trying to catch the elusive monster striped bass, and he finally caught it this morning, and Good Morning Gloucester was on the scene to capture this amazing catch.  See photo of Tony with his 54” striper.   (Well maybe it was really only 28”, but it is still really big! And that’s no fish tale.)

Rocky Neck Gallery’s Opening Reception on Saturday, June 11

Waiting by Martha Wakefield

Image #1 Martha Wakefield

Meet new and returning artists at Rocky Neck Gallery’s opening reception on Saturday, June 11, from 5-8 p.m. Joining 22 other North Shore and regional artists at the cooperative gallery in Gloucester are John Cameron, fine furniture maker and engraver, Deborah Geurtze, printmaker; David Piemonte, traditional black and white photographer; and Deborah Worrall, potter.

East Gloucester is the setting for John Cameron’s workshop where he designs and builds furniture on commission. He believes that “furniture should be quietly pleasing, humming softly rather than loudly proclaiming its presence … fitting into a room for many years to come.” John studied with James Krenov in California and has shown his work in galleries in New York State, California and numerous venues on the East Coast.

A deep connection to nature is reflected in the etchings and monotypes of Deborah Geurtze. She writes, “Wilderness – its patterns and complexity – are a continual source of my inspiration.” Deborah studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and printmaking with Robert Bero. She has recently moved to Rocky Neck from upstate New York.

Six months in Venice, Italy, was a pivotal point in David Piemonte’s career. There he discovered the beauty and solitude of night photography. Working exclusively with black and white film, Piemonte makes traditional prints using archival processing techniques. He has exhibited his award-winning work in numerous venues and has lived on Cape Ann since 1980.

Now living in Gloucester, but originally from Ecuador, Ruth Worrall came to the United States at age 16. After taking a pottery class in Maine in her mid- twenties, she was briefly excited about becoming a potter. Fifteen years later, she went back to college and took more pottery classes. It was then that she realized “clay was what I was meant to do!” Ruth makes traditional, functional pottery and loves knowing her work will bring art into the day-to-day lives of those who own her pots.

Returning Rocky Neck Gallery members include oil painters, watercolorists, potters, printmakers, mixed media artists, photographers and jewelers.

Rocky Neck Gallery, 53 Rocky Neck Avenue, Gloucester, MA 01930 Hours, June to October, are: Sunday – Wednesday 11-6; Thursday – Saturday 11–8. See our Facebook page and Twitter for up-to-date information and visit our website atrockyneckgallery.com

Breaking News!!! Here’s the Official Scoop On The Birdseye Property From Sheree DeLorenzo

Where do you hear it first?  GMG, Natch!

Beach Front Gloucester Commercial LLC, a limited liability corporation formed for the purpose of acquiring the Bird’s Eye property located at 47-61 Commercial Street along with 10 Beach Court in Gloucester, Massachusetts, has entered into a Purchase and Sales agreement to acquire these properties. Sheree DeLorenzo, owner-operator of Cruiseport Gloucester LLC is the lead project manager for the Bird’s Eye project.

“Our intentions for the property are in keeping with mixed use along Gloucester’s working waterfront. We have no intentions of condos at this site. However, this location is ideal for a hotel, restaurant and conference / function facility,” said DeLorenzo.

“We have shown with Cruiseport that it is possible to have successful mixed use projects that contribute jobs and revenue to the city,” continued DeLorenzo.

Cruiseport Gloucester LLC currently consists of a function hall, restaurant, commercial marina, and is homeport to national and international cruise ships. Cruiseport currently employs approximately 150 people. Nine commercial fishing vessels regularly utilize the Cruiseport commercial docks along with the LNG service tugboat.

“We want to work with the neighborhood and the city of Gloucester to bring about the positive change that we know is possible for the beautiful city of Gloucester,” said DeLorenzo.

Mayor Carolyn Kirk has been briefed by DeLorenzo and expressed optimism about this latest news regarding Bird’s Eye. Said Kirk, “these plans are in keeping with the long-standing goal of the city to attract a downtown hotel, expand the tax base, generate revenue, and bring about additional vitality to Gloucester.”

Additional comment will be forthcoming after the closing date which is approximately 30 days from now.

Rainer Maria Rilke Quote of The Week From Greg Bover

"If you are patient in one moment of anger, you will escape a hundred days of sorrow"
Rainer Maria Rilke  (1875-1926)

Rilke is often regarded as the most significant poet in the German language. Born in Prague, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Rilke was sent to military school, but rebelled and studied the humanities at university. He became the protégé, and some say lover, of Lou Andreas-Salome, an older intellectual woman, and traveled extensively with her including a visit to Tolstoy. He settled in Paris after the turn of the century, writing much of his best work there including his Requiem poems.  He later lived in Trieste and then Zurich where he continued his deep examination of the nature of life and death. In 1922 he finished his best known work, the Duino Elegies. He died of leukemia at 51.

Surfcasting For Families- Volunteers needed

Hi Joe,

The Trustees of Reservations are looking for a few qualified fishermen to come teach newcomers the basics of surfcasting. They’ll be teaching people who come for the Saturday Morning Beginner Surfcasting program for families that runs every Saturday Morning in June at Crane’s Beach in Ipswich. If you can help spread the word, it would be much appreciated!

Thanks,
