Maritime Mansions at Twilight is a new series of special, limited tours that highlight significant homes that have a maritime theme in a different town of the North of Boston region each month from June through October. Gloucester’s Sargent House will be featured on Thursday, June 25 at 7 p.m. with “Reversal of Fortune: Judith Sargent & the Fight for Women’s Rights.” Hear how a loveless marriage, enormous debts, and a great love affair led to the fight for female independence. See works by Fitz Henry Lane and John Singer Sargent in a fabulous mansion near the harbor.
This tour can accommodate up to 20 participants and costs $15 per person. Please note that there are some stairs. Call ahead for handicapped/wheelchair entrance. Reservations are required. To order tickets or for more information about this program, including a downloadble brochure with the full 2009 Maritime Mansions series, please visit http://www.escapesnorth.com/maritime_mansions.

Essex River Day planned for Today

From the Beacon

Essex –

Essex River Day will be held Saturday, June 20 (rain date, Sunday June 21). It is a chance for everyone in town to enjoy one of its most valued resources: the Essex River. Those who have a boat will offer to take Essex friends and neighbors who may not have access “down river.”

This simple idea has grown into a full day of events, including a softball game, cookout, music and a bonfire.

Throughout the day, host captains and boat-owning families will be taking Essex guests down river. The harbormaster and chief of police, Pete Silva, will maintain a list of host captains and boat owners who would be willing to take folks down river. Those with available space on their boats, or who would like to be matched with a host captain and crew for a ride, may call the harbormaster at 978- 768-6628 or e-mail psilva@essexma.org.

Hosts and guests can work out themselves how they want to spend the day — cruising down river, visiting the beach, etc.

Several events have been scheduled during the day: For more, click here
