You’ve probably seen these flamingos around town. I stopped to ask the Reardon family on East Main St. how they got flocked and how they could get “unflocked”. They said they had an idea it might happen to them, but weren’t sure. The “flocker” is anonymous (to keep people from getting revenge). So now the Reardons have the choice of paying (donating) $5 to ensure that they won’t get flocked again, $10 to get the birds removed, and $15 to flock a “friend”. Of course, it’s all in fun, and a creative way of raising money for a worthy cause!
Cape Ann Relay for Life’s Team Re-lei for a Cure is holding a “Flocking” fundraiser. Surprise a friend by having a flock of pink flamingos placed on a their lawn to help raise money for the American Cancer Society. Call Patty or Melanie Wall at 978-283-4406.

The Hive is equal parts working studio, gallery event space & clubhouse for the younger generation of Cape Ann creative folk. We formed early in 2009 to encourage art & idea collaborations, support systems and the creation of links between individuals and their community as a whole.
The Hive seeks to build community by providing a space for arts exploration, cross-pollination of ideas and promoting creative and active lifestyles on Cape Ann.
This blog is our mainline of communication. Content ranges from what’s happening at the The Hive, to what our contributing artists are currently working on, to general info of what’s going on on Cape Ann and the surrounding area.
We are a pretty diverse crew, ranging both in our artistic styles as well as our passions. However, we find common ground in our vision to unite the creative & active community and make Cape Ann a more unique place. Check out our profiles to learn more about us.
For a place that has such a rich history with the arts, sometimes it feels like the current scene is much too focused on traditional fine art and is lacking on support for new mediums. Our gallery at The Hive sprouted from the fact that we have so many local friends doing interesting work, without a clear venue to show it.

This Thursday sees the triumphant return of two musical monsters: Keyboard millipede and vogalist xtremondo Mr. Joe Bargar and three-fisted drummber Mr. Joey Scrima. We have’nt seen Joey in awhile, due to a horrible inkjet printer accident and we’re happy to have a copy of him to flail the nite away. Joe, of course has been here more recently. He’s a busy guy and I’m glad to have him back once again. Look out for his gut-wrenching version of the classic “Drown in my own tears” : I’m bringin’ my hanky, and an EMT will be on call for those of you with heart problems. As for the rest of us, Greg T. and I will be on duty, just tryin’ to keep up.

The Summer is about to begin and with it the usually great “JAZZ AT THE STUDIO” summer jazz concert series.

Hello Film Fans,
In the couple of weeks since the end of The Cape Ann Community Cinema’s successful inaugural season at the Gloucester Stage, we’ve had a fantastic development — we’ve found a summer home!
From July 1 to the end of September (at least), we’ll be showing our regular line-up of independent, foreign and local films at 21 Main Street in Gloucester (above the St. Peter’s Club and Mystery Train Records), and are proud to be the only provider of such programming on Cape Ann. The space is the home of Shannon Mount’s event company, West End Events, and Shannon has so generously offered us the space for three entire months. The space is fully handicap accessible and features a wet bar, prep kitchen and stage. We will be working with local restaurants on various “Dinner And A Movie” packages.
In the mean time, in order to raise the funds required for the move, we are hosting a VIDEO SALE, featuring a great selection of 10,000 VHS tapes donated by Pam Ranger of the former Video Viewpoint in Manchester. The sale will be held this Saturday, May 30 from 9am-2pm behind The Gloucester Stage Company at 267 East Main Street in Gloucester, with a rain date of Sunday, May 31 from 9am-2pm. No tape will sell for more than $3.00. And oh yeah – we need volunteers to help run the sale.
As much of a technophile as I am, I feel that people gave up on VHS too soon, as a considerable number of films released on the format in the last 30 years are still not available on DVD. And with the economy in the state it is, VHS provides an affordable “placeholder” for those who want to keep growing their movie collections on a budget. For anyone who would like to help the Cinema financially but doesn’t want to take anything home, we will donate your purchase to local charities that service people who can use them. It doesn’t cost a lot, and everybody wins.
Another way people can help is by donating their old VHS or DVD movies. Most of them will be sold at the sale, but some will find their way into our DVD lending library, which we’ll make available free loan to cinema patrons once we’ve reopened. I’ve been collecting DVD’s since there were DVD’s to collect, and have amassed a fun and ever-growing collection that I’m just rarin’ to share with Cape Ann, especially considering there are no video stores (other than “Lackluster”) remaining.
Our July schedule — including operas and ballets — will be up next week!

Cape Ann Art Haven, 180B Main St., will offer a free T-shirt to any student who preregisters for art classes for the month of June. The nonprofit art studio offers classes for students in grades three through five on Mondays and Wednesdays, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays for students in grades six through eight. Lobster College sounds like a hungry Mainiac’s dream: all lobster, all the time. Ah, but it’s real, if only for one weekend, Sept. 17-20. In past years, Lobster College has attracted folks from as near as Maine, as far as Illinois, Michigan, Florida, and Australia. Along with retirees and other curious fans of the crustacean, there have been restaurant owners and students of marine science for whom this is a serious hands-on learning experience.
Instructors are University of Maine faculty and lobster fishermen and dealers who serve up generous lessons on lobster biology and ecology, stock management, branding and marketing, and related environmental issues. Students learn to bait traps and go out on a working lobster boat. They hear about lobster products and taste recipes at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Last year they ate at least ten lobster dishes in four days.
The program is run by the Lobster Institute, a coalition of University of Maine faculty and those working in the industry, focused on research and education outreach to protect, conserve and enhance a healthy lobster fishery as a resource, and lobstering as both an industry and a way of life. Lobster College is also a fundraiser for the institute. Sessions takes place in and around Boothbay Harbor, among the prettiest sections along Midcoast Maine’s rocky coast. Participants stay at Kenniston Hill Inn Bed & Breakfast
Enrollment is limited to 20; the deadline is August 31. Tuition is $575 per person, including all lobster meals, plus room rates which range from $450-$570 for the weekend. Details are at www.lobsterinstitute.org in Boothbay. The charming shipbuilder’s mansion was built in 1786.
