International Dory Race Eliminations This Saturday At Niles Beach

What is always fun to watch and a great way to spend a morning this Saturday The International Dory Races will hold elimination races starting at 8:30AM at Niles Beach. Don’t worry if you don’t show up right at 8:30 there will be a decent amount of the morning to catch the exciting action from the beach. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again- here is the recipe for a fantastic morning.

Grab the kids- stop by Last Stop Variety- grab a coffee and chocolate chip/blueberry muffin and head down to Niles for the races. It’s a true Gloucester tradition and a fun way to spend time with the family. You can join in the fun for only $50 a year and use the dories which are tied up at St Peter’s Marina in Harbor Cove.

Click here for pictures of what you can expect to see including Jimmy T proclaiming himself the Worlds Greatest Grand Banks Dory Rower

From Jimmy T-
Dory rowers wanted. The more the merrier. Compete in the elimination races to determine who will represent the U.S. vs. Canada in the International Dory Races on June 19th, 2010.

If you don’t have a dorymate come anyway and possibly hook-up with another rower for the races. You could end up winning…stranger things have happened. We particularly need women rowers but are looking for rowers for all Divisions.

Friday night, June 4th, 6 p.m. at St. Peter’s Square.

2010 Downtown Gloucester Block Party Info This Saturday Kicks Off The Season!

image

Check Out The Downtown Gloucester Block Party Schedule and Info Here-

http://www.downtowngloucester.com/Index.cfm

blockpartyscedule2010

I had to step down from the Block Party Committee due to time constraints but am whole heartily looking forward to enjoying them.  Wishing my buddies on the committee the absolute best and looking forward to the fun times they put on for us all to enjoy!

Update From Erika Hansen-

A Highland Tradition comes to Main Street!

From the beautiful and vivavious Jennifer Goulart Amero comes this fabulous addition to the block party entertainment lineup:

Emerald Rae & her mate Sean Connors will perform a highland tradition called “busking” from 6p-7p.  They will start at one end of Main Street and play along the way.

They will cap this off with a performance (and feel free to join the dancing!) in front of Sovereign Bank at 7p.
And remember Emerald Rae’s performance comes on the heels (pun intended!) of Kristen McCarthy, the tribal fusion bellydancer.
How cool is that?
Another Update from Erika hansen 6/18/10
One of the organizations that approached us to have a presence at Block party is the Nora Ruchman Scholarship Fund.  Friends of Nora, a beautiful young woman whom we lost tragically this Spring, will have a table at block party near the former Empire building with information from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.  They will be selling bracelets with Nora’s name for the Nora Ruchman Scholarship Fund and raising money for an upcoming walk in Boston: The Out of the Darkness Overnight, an 18-mile journey through the night, from dusk until dawn. Organizers say it’s a unique opportunity to bring the issues of depression and suicide into the light as people walk together to turn heartbreak into hope for tomorrow. While block party is all about fun, it’s also all about community and this community has lost too many of our own to suicide.   Nora’s friends want to make sure we don’t lose anyone else this way.  So we hope you’ll stop by the table and learn more.

This year’s artists include: Nancy Alimansky, Geoffrey Bayliss, Mary Buckley, Katherine Coakley, Rob Diebboll, Cheryl Dyment, Edie Freedman, Richard Giedd, Lynda Goldberg, Christian Gotfredson, Heather Johnson Reid, Mary Rhinelander McCarl, Michael Oleksiw, Tricia O’Neill, David Piemonte, Richard Seeley, Kate Somers. Michael Storella

The Opening Reception is on June 8th and is open to the public. From 6-7PM guests will be invited to view the new show, meet the artists and cast their vote for the “Viewer’s Choice Award,” sponsored by Hershey Frame Shop. Votes can be cast through July 30th. At 7PM Carol Seitchik, independent Fine Arts Curator will lead a discussion with a group of the participating artists about the nature and style of their work. Ms. Seitchik curates several exhibitions a year for the employees of New England Biolabs and Cell Signaling Technologies who actively participate in selecting the artwork. She developed this unique program, over twenty years ago, of bringing art to the workplace. She was a sculptor and worked in mixed media, and is currently focusing on her poetry.
