Two Great local Fundraisers –Sent In By Dean Salah At Georges Coffee Shop

image

Dean writes-

Hey Joey can you help me spread the word about two great fundraisers we have going.
First off the Kevin Riley fundraiser has secured four seats to the Sox vs. Tampa game Sept. 7th.
Tickets donated by Gortons on sale at Georges $10 each, this is a no brainer to throw $10 at a great
cause, but to have the chance to win four seats to this crucial game is a huge bonus, they are picking the winner
at the ball game Thursday night so get your tickets now.

Secondly the GFAA is selling tickets to the Cruiseport Gala to
kick off the Renewal of Newell fundraiser. Only 600 tickets are being sold at $25 each, including a DJ, munchies
cash bar, beer and wine. Our kids really deserve a new field and Dick Wilson and the entire GFAA staff are really gonna
get it done so lets support the cause. Tickets for both events are on sale at George’s so get your tickets now.

In this complex, frightening time, each day we’re anxious scared, and tense.
We worry that our fears will hurt our health, and run in circles looking for relief.
There’s just no place to rest.

These five days are tailor-made for this.
Being silent is an act of kindness to yourself, and meditation is a place to rest.
But finding peace is not for you alone. Above all it can be a way to live.

Beaux Arts Auction Preview Art Show

Rocky Neck Gallery, Ann Fisk Room, August 6 – 11

THURSDAY, August 5: Nights on the Neck, 5:30 to 9pm

Catherine Strisik

Performers and entertainers include:

  • Three Sheets to the Wind, a group of local musicians and Schooner Adventure crew members, are preserving the history of maritime work songs (chanteys) and forebitter songs.
  • Carol St. John will explain how graphology (the study of handwriting) works, talk about appropriate uses, and call for participants to contribute handwritings to demonstrate its validity for a fun, friendly, positive event.
  • Rick Drost began singing with a Kingston Trio-style group in high school, continued in a small folk group in college, then a glee club, and an opera chorus. He started writing and singing around coffeehouses in DC and New England in the ‘70s, finally settling in Cambridge, MA, where he was a member of the folk-rock group Parts and Labor. He performs at least once a week, wherever he goes.
  • Catherine Strisik, daughter of well-known Rockport artist Paul Stisik, has been active in the writing community of Taos, New Mexico, for over 26 years. Her poems have appeared in numerous publications including The Cafe Review, The Comstock Review, Peregrine, Northwest Review, War, Literature and the Arts, and others. Her new book, Thousand-Cricket Song, from which she will be reading, is receiving much acclaim. This book of poetry gives a glimpse, through Strisik’s eyes, into Cambodian life 25 years after the Khmer Rouge slaughter of 1.7 million Cambodians through execution, disease and starvation. "Here is a perfect, clean and delicate (powerful and often terrifying) work of art," said John Nichols, author of The Milagro Beanfield War.
  • Laura Dow / Zumba. Working out can be healthy, rewarding, and beneficial; it can be lots of things, but it’s never been known to be an exhilarating experience… until Zumba! The Zumba program fuses Latin rhythms and easy-to-follow moves to create a fitness program that will blow you away. Laura will present three Zumba rhythms ~ Salsa, Tango, and Flamenco~ to give you a taste of the program that’s taking the world by storm.
