Things To Do- The Wish Ball March 12th
Danvers, Mass. (February X, 2011) – Of the nearly 24 million Americans that have diabetes, as many as 3 million Americans have type I diabetes, which usually strikes children and young adults. In fact, a staggering 40 children every day are diagnosed with the disease. Wylinn’s Wish for a Cure is hoping to reduce these numbers by raising funds at the Wish Ball, an evening of dinner and dancing, to be held on Saturday, March 12, 2011 at the Danversport Yacht Club in Danvers, Massachusetts.
Wylinn’s Wish for a Cure was founded by Terry Palmisano of Gloucester as a way to help find a cure in honor of her granddaughter Wylinn who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2008, just before turning four years-old. Palmisano, encouraged by her team’s fundraising success at a Walk to Cure Diabetes event in Boston, came up with the idea of selling special “Wylinn’s Wish for a Cure” grocery/tote bags at local stores, including Goodies Ice Cream in Danvers, owned by her son and daughter-in-law, Wylinn’s parents, John and Stefani Palmisano. In addition to raising money, the bags also serve an educational purpose as tucked inside each one is a Type 1 Diabetes Symptoms Sheet.
Feeling that more was needed to raise awareness and fund the research needed to find a cure, Linda Flaherty of Danvers, a friend of Terry’s, decided they could do more. “Everyone has been touched by diabetes and we really wanted to do something about it,” said Terry Palmisano. Encouraged by the support of colleagues and friends, now known as the Friends of Wylinn’s Wish for a Cure, they decided that they could increase awareness, raise the most money, and brighten an otherwise dreary month by hosting a gala event.
The Wish Ball, an elegant, “Black Tie Optional” gala, sponsored by the Friends of Wylinn’s Wish for a Cure will be held at the Danversport Yacht Club on Saturday, March 12, 2011 from 6:00pm – midnight. World class entertainment to be provided by the World Premier Band. Tickets are $75 each. Proceeds will support the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), the leader in diabetes research worldwide and consistently ranked among the best-managed charitable organizations.
In addition to ticket sales, organizers are looking for sponsors for the event as well as donations of raffle items. Ads are also available in the Wish Ball program book. To purchase tickets or make a donation, please contact Linda Flaherty at (978) 808-5233 or wishballcomm@aol.com.

The Cape Ann Chamber Home & Business Exposition will be held this year at Gloucester High School on March 26th and 27th. The event, which will be held inside the high school’s athletic field house, is open to all businesses. The floor will be open on Saturday (the 26th) from 10:00 to 4:00 and Sunday from 10:00 to 3:00.
Committee chairman Ed Collard reports interest for the show is extremely high. “We are excited to have the interest of so many businesses on Cape Ann and other areas,” said Collard. “This year’s show is going to showcase many businesses that help the community in a variety of ways and I believe we will have a terrific turnout. This will be a ‘Show and Sell’ event.”
The Exposition replaces the Home & Garden Show from prior years. Bob Hastings, Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce said, “We decided we would have a better show by opening it up to all businesses in the area. It will be a more diverse show with expectations of more booths than in prior years.”
The Exposition will feature a show kitchen with cooking demonstrations by local culinary stars. Another featured highlight will include an interactive children’s section; many exhibitors will be providing door prizes and other giveaways.
Booths are $375 with an early bird discount rate of $325 for businesses registered by February 25th. To register your company for the show please download the attached registration form or contact Project and Events Director Tim Burton at 978-283-1601 or email tim@capeannchamber.com.

New exhibition to open at the Cape Ann Museum in March
The Cape Ann Museum will present a special exhibition of works by artist Alfred Czerepak (1928-1986). The Art of Al Czerepak will open with a reception on Saturday, March 5 and remain on display through May 29. The exhibition will include a wide range of works by this multi-talented artist and teacher including examples of his paintings, prints and wood carvingsdrawn from private collections throughout the area.
Czerepak was born in 1928 in Haverhill and received his formal art training in Boston immediately following World War II. He was introduced to Cape Ann, as many artists were, as a result of his training under Aldro Hibbard at what is now the Massachusetts College of Art and at Hibbard’s summer art school which was held in Rockport from 1920 to 1949. In Rockport, Czerepak quickly became part of a small but energetic group of young artists who were devoted to exploring new theories and techniques and to pushing the boundaries of Cape Ann’s largely conservative art colony.
Over the years, Czerepak became a well known and much loved member of Cape Ann’s art community. He maintained studios in Rockport and later at Reeds Wharf in East Gloucester. Things To Do- Skeptics In the Pub To Meet February 15th
Skeptics in the Pub
The next meeting of Skeptics in the Pub will be on February 15. Mary Warhol will astound and surprise the audience with “Snooping throughSnopes.com.” Although Mary claims to be an innumerate, that is she knows nothing of math or science, she will mine the Snopes site for unexpected, funny and amazing urban legends and, more importantly, the truth. Mary is a gifted speaker so prepare to have fun and learn new stuff all at the same time!
The meeting begins at 6:00 PM at the Dog Bar, 65 Main St. Gloucester, for a meet and greet with an opportunity to order food and drink. The presentation begins at 6:30.
This gathering is sponsored by Cape Ann Skeptics. “Skeptics in the Pub” get-togethers are regularly scheduled on the 3rd Tuesday of the month. All skeptics or those interested in skepticism are invited. For more information or to join our mailing list, visitwww.capeannskeptics.com or emailrich@capeannskeptics.com.
Gloucester Area Astronomy Club February Program february 11th
Joey, would it be possible to get our February program listed on your website? We’re having a guest speaker who will be giving a presentation on variable stars. We think it will be of interest to local folks.
Many thanks,
Michael Deneen
Chair, GAAC
At the February 11 meeting of the Gloucester Area Astronomy Club, Matthew Templeton, AAVSO, will discuss the observing of variable stars.
Variable stars are stars that change in their apparent brightness over time. By tracking their changes, we can apply known physical laws derived here on Earth to understand the physical properties of distant stars and what makes them behave the way they do. Much of the work of observing variable stars over the past two centuries has been done by observers just like you.
Variable star observing is something that almost anyone can do, no matter what kind of equipment you have. In this persentation we will discuss what variable stars are and why we observe them, and which variable stars you yourself can start observing both for your own enjoyment and to participate in scientific research.
The Gloucester Area Astronomy Club ( http://www.gaac.us ) meets on the second Friday of each month, at St. Paul Lutheran church in Lanesville.
Peter Krasinski Spite Marriage Event at St John’s Church Feb 5th
Dear Joey, I love GMG. Can you put up this announcement. It’s lots of fun, and is always a full house. Attached is a jpg of the original poster.
St. John’s Church welcomes back for winter fun Peter Krasinski, Boston organist who will accompany Buster Keaton’s silent film Spite Marriage on Saturday, February 5 at 7 pm. Laugh at the slapstick comedy of Buster Keaton’s silent film “Spite Marriage” (76 min.), about an unassuming dry cleaner in love with a famous actress who in turn loves somebody else. Organist Peter Krasinski improvises the music, just as it would have been performed at the movie’s release in 1929. An organ consultant, conductor, and music educator as well as a performer, Krasinski currently serves as accompanist at Beth El Temple Center in Belmont and organist of First Church of Christ, Scientist in Providence. $15/10 students and elders, at the door. Vintage Cartoons start at 6 pm.

First-Ever Blue Shutters Beachside Inn Chili Cook-Off Set for February 12.
All guests need to do is bring a pot of chili for everyone to enjoy, and they get 25% off their weekend stay. Our judges – including Jeremy Goldberg from Cape Ann Brewing and Doug Silva from the Topside Grill and Pub — will choose a winner that Saturday evening, and the chili champion gets a gift certificate for a free return visit.
If folks would like to come and stay a night or two and just taste the chili, that’s OK too.
This could be a great way to spice up Valentines Day (just a few days later) — while we’ll be enjoying chili on Saturday night, there will be time for a romantic dinner downtown, a glass of champagne by the fire, a walk on the beach and much more.
Anyone who’s interested should call or email us to make a reservation and get in on the fun!

seARTS WANTS YOU! To Vote For Gloucester Video With Jackie Ganim DeFalco and Kristine Fisher
Kristine Fisher and Jackie Ganim DeFalco stop by to talk all about seARTS and all of the exciting programs happening including the get the vote out effort to inform people about the American Style Magazine voting for Gloucester.
Kristine writes-
As a community we have a unique opportunity to select Gloucester as a Top 25 Arts Destination in the US……and we need your votes to make it happen!
Please join seARTS’ ( The Society for the Encouragement of the Arts) grass roots campaign to help elevate Gloucester’s visibility as a top U.S. arts destination. Deadline for voting is March 5th ! Please vote multiple times! Link below!
One of our interests is to help drive up the cultural/creative economy for all of Cape Ann. We have succeeded in getting Gloucester nominated as a Top 25 Art Destination in AmericanStyle’s survey. AmericanStyle is a highly respected national publication focusing on art and travel, and is an excellent resource for artists and art enthusiasts. It publishes the top art events across the country, highlighting select destinations and profiling individual artists.
The readership of AmericanStyle represents the cultural/creative economy that our community is hoping to attract and grow. Securing Gloucester on their list as one of America’s Top 25 Arts Destinations will elevate Cape Ann on the national stage. We have over 2,000 working artists on Cape Ann and a thriving community that celebrates the arts of all disciplines. After all, our Rocky Neck is the country’s oldest continuous working art colony in the U.S.!
Because AmericanStyle’s survey is “city based,” we chose Gloucester, as it has the largest population. seARTS has been sending weekly e-blasts to our membership requesting folks to vote by March 5, 2011. It is only through votes that Gloucester will secure a place on the list as a Top 25 Destination in AmericanStyle’s spring/summer issue to come out in May 2011. We are hopeful that you will be comfortable voting “early and often” between now and March 5th. Here is a link to the voting form. http://www.americanstyle.com/current-issue/
Please scroll down to the “Small Cities” list and cast your vote for Gloucester!
