Here & Now Sunday July 17th at The Sargent House Museum

‘HERE & NOW’ SERIES BRINGS ARTISTS TO HISTORIC SITE

Here & Now: Contemporary Artists Working in The Sargent House Museum Garden

Launches this Sunday with artist Kathy Gentile Roberts

Here & Now was conceived as a means to revitalize the 1782 Sargent House and energize the under-utilized Sargent House Museum garden. The garden’s tiers, which were added to the site in 1925 by preservation architect Joseph Everett Chandler, create unique spaces for artists to set up and find inspiration in the garden. Known for restorations at the House of the Seven Gables and the Paul Revere House, Chandler made various alterations to the historic site and grounds.

Built in 1782 for Judith Sargent Murray—an early feminist writer, philosopher, and social activist, the Sargent House is a fine example of high-style Georgian domestic architecture, enlarged during the Federal period, and converted into a museum during the height of the Colonial Revival.

There are still opportunities available for artists to participate in the Here & Now series. Interested artists should contact Site Manager Kate Laurel Burgess-Mac Intosh at kburgess1@mac.com or by calling 978-412-5290.

Upcoming Artists in the Here & Now Series

July 31: Kathryn Gentile Roberts

August 7: Mary Rhinelander McCarl

August 14: Dorothy Englander

August 21: Carole Anne Meehan

August 28: Coco Berkman

Run Gloucester! 7-Mile Road Race Needs Volunteers

GLOUCESTER, Mass. (August 1, 2011) – Volunteers are needed for race weekend for the Run Gloucester! 7-Mile Road Race, set for Aug. 21 on scenic Cape Ann.
“We need volunteers to help out with registration, water stations, parking, course monitoring, and various other assignments" said Diane Anderson, volunteer coordinator for the race.
Volunteers can sign up online at the race website by going to the volunteer page at
http://www.rungloucester.com/volunteer. Race officials say all are welcome, no previous experience is necessary and that volunteering is best when it’s done with friends and family.
"We also need volunteers to help us get the word out to runners throughout the region about this beautiful road race here in Gloucester,” she added.  With five miles of ocean views, Run Gloucester! is an excellent way to visit and see the history and seascapes of historic Cape Ann. This is the second year for the race, which was created by Dave McGillivray of DMSE Sports, Inc., who also serves as race director of the BAA Boston Marathon, TD Bank Beach to Beacon 10K in Maine, Feaster Five Thanksgiving Day Race,
Harvard Pilgrim 10K at Patriot Place and others.

In addition to volunteering, Gloucester area runners are encouraged to register in advance at http://www.rungloucester.com.
Registration for the race and bib pick-up will be held Saturday, Aug. 20 at Gloucester High
School from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Race day registration is available from 6 to 7:45 a.m. at the high school.

New this year, the Road Runner Club of America Expo which will be held Sat., Aug. 20 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Sunday, Aug. 21 from 8-11 a.m.

Race day parking will be available at Gloucester High School and at Stage Fort Park. Race
organizers are encouraging runners who pick up their numbers or register for the race at the high school on Sat., Aug. 20 to park at Stage Fort Park on race day, and those picking up or registering for the race on race day to park at Gloucester High School.

Proceeds from the Run Gloucester! 7-Mile will benefit the Gloucester Fishermen Athletic
Association, which raises funds for Gloucester High School student-athletes, sports programs and facilities, and is a key supporter of the renovation of Gloucester High’s Newell Stadium.

STREET PERFOMERS NEEDED! Artistic Director, Valerie Marcley is delighted that so many performers have applied for inclusion in the August 20th Block Party. “The Steering Committee and I picture the street filled with entertainers. The stages are booked. We need acts that can stroll the street and entertain. Buskers, magicians, acoustic music, comedians, jugglers – you name it. I bet there are plenty of creative people in town that audiences would cheer! If you’ve got a street act, please email glostablockpahty@yahoo.com.”

THE ELUSIVE VOLUNTEER – The Block party had a few wonderful volunteers who helped beyond what was expected. We need more of you! Do a shift at the Info Table, sell raffle tickets or stage manage. All easy tasks, short shifts and time to enjoy the party yourself. Clean-up was not difficult, but we can use your help at the end of the night when the Main Street turns back into a tidy, dynamic business district. Vendors are also sought – sell your product, promote your business, inform audiences of your service.

RAFFLE – The 50/50 raffle funds the Block Party and the winner receives half the money raised. We need more sales to support the series. Some businesses have agreed to pre-party sales to help us. If you have any ideas to sell raffle tickets, or want to sell during the party, please contact: glostablockpahty@yahoo.com

SPONSORS – While we’re begging – would you or your business like to be a sponsor of the Downtown Gloucester Block Party series? For your generosity you would be included in promotional and publicity materials. Or you may remain anonymous. Email us at the given yahoo link and we’ll discuss your involvement.

THE JULY PARTY – Block Party Organizers received wonderful, encouraging feedback and suggestions from audiences, the City, stores, restaurants and performers. All are considered to make your next party even more successful. We are grateful to all: the acts that gave their talent free to help continue the party series, businesses, the City and the establishing committee – all so cooperative and supportive. Thank again! See you August 20th at 6 pm!

Summer Artist Series

Paintings by Zygmund Jankowski through August 2

Rocky Neck Gallery, 53 Rocky Neck Ave.

Zyg Jankowski
Still Life, Watercolor by Zygmund Jankowski

The Rocky Neck Gallery’s Summer Artist Series continues with "Zyg’s Expression,"watercolors and oils by the late Zygmond Jankowski.

Jankowski opened a summer gallery on Rocky Neck in 1964 (at 5 Madfish Wharf, now Gallery Five and most recently Eugene Quinn gallery) and moved to Gloucester permanently in the 1970s. He taught at various universities, art associations and at home in his studio. Ranging from abstract to more realist impressionistic and expressive oil paintings, water colors, and mixed media on paper, his works burst with color. Today his paintings are included in major corporate, museum, and private collections throughout the country and in Europe, including the Cape Ann Museum and the Charles Demuth Museum in Pennsylvania. He has won numerous prizes in juried shows and in 2007 had a one-man show at the Cape Ann Museum. The Rockport Art Association honored his memory with a solo show in 2010.

Born in South Bend, Indiana in 1925, he studied at the California College of Arts and Crafts where he was taught by Victor DeWilde, George Post and Otis Oldfield. Throughout his career Jankowski painted various interpretations of certain themes, each time emphasizing a different element, such as rhythm, space, shape, and color. "You stand as referee between the scene, your emotion and analysis. Your goal is to experience a feeling of excitement for the first stroke to the last." He also said of his work, "These are paintings, NOT pictures. Cameras take pictures.

Summer Artist Series

August 3-16: Slipping the Knot, watermedia paintings by Martha Wakefield

RECEPTION: SAT, August 6, 5-8pm, Gallery Talk, 7pm

Martha Wakefield, Slip 2
Slip# 2, watermedia by Martha Wakefield

This body of work is an exploration of loss—of love that once was vibrant has slipped away. To denote this spirited soul I am utilizing a slip—an article of clothing that conveys intimacy with the wearer. A slip can be utilitarian or sensual, revealing the beauty of the female form without portraying nakedness. It has an intimate relationship with the wearer acting as a second skin but also acts as a protective or proper barrier to the other influences. I am using color, shape, line and layering to convey a sense of someone wearing, moving, and living in such a sheer skin of fabric—yet one who remains hidden from our view. The garment holds the memory of a loved one; we sense a presence though in truth she has slipped away from the knot of life and family. All that remains is the clothes.

Martha Wakefield, a former fashion executive, is a visual artist working in watercolors, acrylics and oils. She is a juried member of the Cambridge Art Association and the Rhode Island Watercolor Society. Martha has studied with Wolf Kahn, Stuart Shils and William Lawrence. Her work has been accepted into numerous juried shows and is in many private collections in United States and Canada. Her paintings have been featured in the Fall/Winter 2010 issue of Wild Apples: a Journal of Nature, Art, and Inquiry, and The Palette Magazine where she is a staff writer. A juried member of the Rocky Neck Gallery of Gloucester, she is also is represented by the Hope Gallery of Bristol, Rhode Island.

The public is invited to a Reception and Artist Talk on Saturday, August 6 from 5 to 8pm. Martha will give a gallery talk at 7pm.

Guest Artist at Khan Studio

Phototraphy by Ruth Curtis through August 4

Khan Studio / Good Morning Gloucester Gallery, Madfish Alley

Ruth Curtis

Ruth Curtis will be the featured guest artist at Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery, 77 Rocky Neck, G3 from July 22, through August 4, 2011 with an Opening Reception on Saturday, July 23rd from 3:00-6:00pm.

Ruth’s passion is to share her love of the outdoors and nautical landscapes with others, and truly capture the beauty that surrounds us everyday. Lighthouses, small town scenery, sailing the ocean, and vivid moments are all captured in her work. Ruth brings to life the moments and images you want to treasure for life and pass on through the generations. Her work has been showcased throughout New England and has won over 150 photography awards. For more information seewww.ruthcurtisphotography.com.

International Dory Race Eliminations Are 3 Weeks Away

amflag

There is still time to represent!

Eliminations are 3 weeks away on August 13th off of Niles Beach .  If you have been rowing or would like to try racing, your time is here.  Grab a partner and get some rows in over the next few weeks and you could represent the US in Nova Scotia , Canada August 27th for the International title.  We need teams in all categories:  Juniors (men 18 & under), Women, Mixed Doubles, Over 40 men, and Open men.  Winners of eliminations receive an “expense paid” trip to Lunenburg to take on the Canadians.  If you have always wanted to try racing and don’t have a partner, let us know and we will try to “hook you up”.

In other news, congratulations to all our members who took on the Blackburn Challenge this past weekend.  A grueling 20+ mile course around Cape Ann in an 800 lb. dory is truly a feat that few can accomplish.  I am proud to say the IDRC was well represented with Christina Carpenter completing the race as the first woman ever to finish solo in a banks dory, Jimmy T receiving a “hall of fame” award for so many (and the fasted time ever) solo in a banks dory, and Jeff Muise/Joe Sanfillippo who broke 4 hours in a “real” banks dory (our unofficial best time ever!).  And, not to forget the return of Geoff Thomas/Tim Oakes who finished a respectable 3rd in the banks dory division after only a few weeks back in the boat.

Lastly, we are looking for volunteers to help get the practice boats back in service Monday, August 1st 6pm at Pavilion Beach .  Mike Harmon has volunteered to tow the boats off mooring and over to the beach where we will scrub them down and row them back to the town landing.  Please let us know if you can give us an hour or so that evening.

Happy Rowing,

IDRC Board of Directors

Session 2 Registration for EPYC Junior Sailing Facebookized!

image

Morning Joey! Is there any way I can put this up for my Junior Sailing Director? Every time we have a managers meeting, we somehow tie GMG into it. Whether it be – “Holy shit did you see that picture of the shark by the breakwater!?” ..or… “Maybe Joey would be willing to slide our advertisement into the blog for the day”…..either way, we always think of you!! J -Dani

Hey Joey, We were hoping you could post about Session 2 registration for EPYC Junior Sailing– we recently started a Facebook page this summer and we’re really excited about getting the Gloucester community involved with our program.  We have some great photos up there from this past Session of our awesome sailors! We’d really love to spread the word about our program via our Facebook page so we can start connecting more with non-members, and really anyone interested in sailing– kids and adults alike!  We’ll be hosting "Race the Point" later in the summer, hoping to get all the local sailing programs involved, so we’ll be in touch about that as well.

Thanks a lot!

Fraser Watson, EPYC Junior Sailing Director

Sugar Magnolia Spicing Up Seafood Throwdown for the Fourth Season Today At The Cape Ann Farmer’s Market

Seafood Throwdown returns to the Cape Ann Farmerʼs Market at Stage Fort Park on
Thursday, July 21st at 4 p.m. This marks the fourth season for this popular cooking contest where the fish always wins and consumers are inspired to think about the role our fishing communities play in ocean conservation. Missy Sallah will once again brings her team from Sugar Magnolias on 112 Main Street to defend her undefeated title as the “Reigning Queen of Seafood Throwdown” for the fourth year. She will be competing
against Julie Ann Geary with the team from Classic Cooks Catering at 10 Blackburn Center. No stranger to cooking, Julie has been in the catering and cooking business for thirty years. We will again be joined with Steve Parkes and his popular demonstration of how to fillet a fish – successfully, Joey Ciaramitaro of Good Morning Gloucester, and Peter van Ness of GimmeSound.

Judging this event will be Loretta Lomba, director of the Chill Zone and a regular behind the Backyard Gardenerʼs table at the farmers market, a member of the Gloucester Fishermenʼs Wives Association and Heather Fraelick, a local foodie and fitness expert. The dishes created by Missy and Julie will be judged on taste, use of the whole animal, originality and presentation.

Seafood Throwdown is a brainchild of the partnership between the Cape Ann Farmerʼs Market and NAMA, the Northwest Atlantic Marine Alliance. Originally conceived as a tool to promote a Community Supported Fishery, or “CSF” here in Gloucester, the successful program has now expanded to over 20 CSFs throughout North America (visit http://www.localcatch.org for more details). The local CSF, Cape Ann Fresh Catch, is a project of the Gloucester Fishermenʼs Wives Association and is in its third year of operation and delivering to a far greater audience than just Cape Ann with 16 Greater Boston distribution points now being served.
As well as promoting the CSF concept, the Seafood Throwdown brings home the message that “Who Fishes Matters” and that principled choice driven by an educated consumer is a way of promoting needs of both ecological and economic realities. The Market opens at 3pm, the contest starts at 4pm and donʼt forget – the parking is free on market days.
A second Seafood Throwdown at Cape Ann Farmers Market is scheduled for August 11th. Once again this year the Seafood Throwdown season is being kicked off in New York at the Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket in Brooklyn. Other events are scheduled for New Bedford Working Waterfront Festival, Marthaʼs Vineyard, New Hampshireʼs Fishtival and the Common Ground Country Fair in Maine, amongst others. The Gloucester Downtown Block Party, a citywide food, family and arts event occurring three times throughout the summer in the oceanside community of Gloucester, on Cape Ann celebrates its fourth year with a new spin in the fashion of that other hipster seaside community – Portsmouth, NH.

Valerie Marcley, co-founder and coordinator of the tremendously successful Seaport Fringe Festival in Portsmouth has come on board as Event Coordinator of the Gloucester Downtown Block Party series, which has drawn thousands at each event, organized and powered historically through volunteer efforts alone. Valerie brings a fresh perspective and some new ideas to help broaden the already successful community event to attract and entertain festival goers of all ages.

New this year is the introduction of street minstrels to entertain seated diners when entertainment on the main stage is too far from your al fresco table, a large family zone with more inexpensive and free youth activities such as sidewalk chalk drawing, face painting, games and interactive theater, picnic tables, street food options for those not wishing to wait for a table on “restaurant row”, an Art Street area with works on display and adult street artists, an event-wide 50/50 raffle, and the inclusion of off-Main Street Vendors in the areas not filled by downtown retailers.

Stages at Hancock and Main, and Porter and Main will once again have people “dancing in the streets” with live music, dance performances and lessons, spectacle, comedy, and even a parade down to a waterfront dance party. As always, and perhaps even more this year, Main Street will be full of arts and music, friends and food for participants of all ages to get out and have fun.

The change in organization comes with the retirement and relocation of two of Gloucester Downtown Block Party founders, Janice Shea and Erika Hansen. Their departure from the wonderful summer series has resulted in a new set of local volunteers coming forward, under their invaluable guidance, to sustain and grow this local calendar highlight.

Lorre Anderson of the Black Swan, Mark McDonough of Serenitee Restaurant Group, and founder of Farmer’s Market and Cape Ann Time banks, Judith Brackley, accomplished writer, Jennifer Goulart Amero, Public Relations and Marketing Director for Serenitee Restaurants and Lucinda Seigel join Linn Parisi, destination marketing guru for Cape Ann and event visionary Janice Lufkin to lead events subcommittees including local artists and entertainers like Dawn Gadow of Art Haven, Peter and Vicki Van Ness of GimmeSound and Henry Allen of The Annie.

Festival dates are Saturday July 16, August 20 and September 17, 2011. Information on performing or volunteering at the Gloucester Block Parties through Val atglostablockpahty@gmail.com

Top Pick For Saturday- VIEW THE LAUNCH OF THE SCHOONER ARDELLE FROM THE ESSEX SHIPBUILDING MUSEUM

SATURDAY, JULY 9 STARTING AT 3:00 PM

Join us at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum’s Shipyard on Saturday, July 9, 2011 to view the launching of the Pinky Schooner Ardelle that is being built by Harold A. Burnham, an eleventh generation Essex shipwright. On Labor Day 2010 we celebrated the signing of her keel and the raising of her first frames. It was an exciting day and all who attended had a great time. Harold is now ready to launch the Schooner Ardelle and we will be there to celebrate.

It’s not often that wooden schooners are launched anywhere in this country, and we are fortunate to have in Essex a craftsman who knows how to build a wooden schooner the same way they were built centuries ago. Harold Burnham and a band of volunteers have spent the last 10 months building this vessel. They’ve been outside in snow storms, rain, and blistering heat. On Saturday, July 9th between 6 – 7 pm she will finally hit the water using the time honored, and exciting, Essex side launch. The Essex Shipbuilding Museum is one of the best places to view a launch from the H.A. Burnham Boatbuilding yard, and we plan on celebrating. Starting at 3 pm we will have live music from Michael Forney’s Bluegrass Band, Daisy Nell and Captain Stan and the second graders from Essex Elementary will perform songs from “The Stowaway Mouse”, hot dogs and Italian sausages from Kayem, chowder from Woodman’s of Essex , and all kinds of beverages. So, mark your calendars and join us!
