Italian Donuts & Cappuccino with Gloucester Historian Ronald H. Gilson

PrintIMG_3410This morning our dear family friend and Gloucester Historian Ronald H. Gilson stopped by for a visit with a personally signed copy of his book “An Island no More” and a copy of a new released book he was involved in supplying his knowledge about World War II  and  Gloucester’s fishing fleet for the book  “Battle Stars for the “Cactus Navy”” written by David D Bruhn for a history project daughter Amanda is currently researching. While enjoying warm cappuccino and a warm batch of Italian ricotta Donuts, Ron treated us to stories from his youth growing up on Cape Ann’s coastline during World War II “Battle of The Atlantic” and Gloucester working water front.

Ron, thank you for your friendship, compelling historical stories and thoughtful gift. We enjoyed every moment of your visit this morning!

What is going on with my DCS/Fisher Paykel appliance’s?

The timing of this couldn’t have come at a worse time of year. This is the season to bake, and prepare for the holidays. The time of year my kitchen gets the most use.  I absolutely love my DCS/ Fisher Paykal appliances, they are by far my most favorite and most used appliance’s in my kitchen…they were my Best friends throughout the creation of  my cookbook “Gifts of Gold  In A Sicilian Kitchen With Sista Felicia; Harvest.”  After hours of reaserch and several phone calls, per the recommendation of DCS, St. Barry took the control panel out of the ovens yesterday and shipped it off to DCS for service,….and we can’t find anyone in our area to service the grill or dishwasher. DCS/FISHER PAYKAL Please HELP!!!!!

Sista’s Favorite Kitchen Gadget of the week

Silicone Omelet Mold by Le’Kue’

Silicone Omelet mold by Le’Kue’, is quite handy during the early morning rush of getting son BJ and husband Barry out the door on time to beat the rout 128 traffic.  At the start of this school year I began fixing BJ and St. Barry “to go” breakfast wraps per their request.  This morning ritual of preparing a hot “to go” breakfast, followed by the quick ‘kiss, kiss, have a good day, here is your warm breakfast, enjoy, wave goodbye close the door,” left me with the not so joyful sink of dirty cooking equipment each morning.

Two weeks ago while washing at the sink, a flash back of a microwave cooking demonstration I attended with my mother, back in the day when Microwaves were the new “Must Have” Kitchen Gadget of the times. The fast, no fuss little mess style cooking revolutionized kitchen around the world.

IMG_2369

I remembered watching scrabbled eggs cook in a glass Pyrex liquid measuring cup quickly, effortlessly, and with little mess within minute’s right in the aisle of the appliance store. The very next morning, happened to be a Saturday, and I decided to replicate that same microwave egg demonstration to son BJ. He thought it was a genius approach of cooking fast with little mess to clean, and was happy with the results. For the next several days their “to go” breakfast wraps and sandwiches were prepared in this fashion, until I scored this nifty silicone omelet gadget made by Le’Kue’ on clearance for $8.00 in Marshalls the other day. This Silicone Omelet mold by Le’Kue’ has definitely made my morning job of fixing a hot “To Go” breakfast for my boys a lot faster and easier. I definitely give this kitchen gadget a two thumbs up for the ease of preparing eggs in an omelet style via the microwave.

*Note~ Our fist omelet was prepared following the manufactures instructions, of whisking ingredients together before pouring into the silicone mold, but that process resulted in 3 things to clean measuring cup, whisking tool, and silicon mold. I shorten the cleaning item list to 2 by add and whisking all ingredients together in the silicone mold itself just prior to cooking.

If you like omelet style eggs and find your morning too busy to deal with “cooking” that requires your undivided attention so you don’t burn the house down, find yourself a Le’Kue’ Omelete mold Stat!

Grandma Felicia’s Heirloom Tomato & Cucumber Salad

Grandma Felicia’s Heirloom Tomato & Cucumber Salad

My grandparents had lush gardens that yielded an abundant amount of sweet vine ripened fruits and vegetables, including several varieties of tomatoes each year. Growing up Grandma Felicia’s Heirloom Tomato & Cucumber Salad made its way onto the table countless times, throughout the summer months. She cleverly paired this simplistic side salad with her famous unconventional sweet non acidic dressing. Her “Sweet Olive Oil Dressing”, perfectly balanced the flavors of the vine ripened Heirloom tomatoes, crisp cucumber and pungent red onion and oregano.  Make sure you serve the salad with a crusty wedge of Italian bread, so you can use the wedge of crusty bread to dip in the extra salad dressing left behind in the plate…we Sicilians call this act of dipping “Abbagnari” …Trust me on this one “a piece of Italian Bread soaked in this sweet dressing is Incredibly Delicious!

Boston’s North Ends Feast Of The Fisherman

IMG_9799

Yesterday Husband Barry and I enjoyed the late afternoon hours walking around Boston’s North End. The streets of the North End were filled with familiar sounds and smells of all things that make up an Italian Fiesta; Food, Family, Friends, and Fun!  This past weekend the celebration of “The Feast Of The Fisherman” hosted by the Modonna Del Soccorso Society drew large crowds from near and far. Back in late June, JeanneMarie Linquata, of Gloucester shared the Linquata Family’s lifetime connection with the Modonna Del Soccorso Society in Boston North End during The “Linquata Family Fiesta Tradition Interview”. JeannMarie Linquata explained how she lovingly continues to keep “Aunt Josie Deliberti’s” tradition of hand making the annual Fiesta Committee members signature ribbon adorned St. Peter and Modonna Del Soccorso Pins for the feast of St.Peter hosted by The St.Peter’s Fiesta Committee in late June here in Gloucester and The Feast Of The Fisherman Hosted by The Modonna Del Soccorso Society in Boston MA. Yesterday I spotted JeanMarie’s beautiful pins on dozens of shirts in the crowded streets of the feast.
