Shore-side fun for festival visitors

The Gloucester Maritime Heritage Center, now in its 10th year, has created a special day for land-bound visitors to the Schooner Festival.

Landlubbers will have a smorgasbord of activities to choose from during its seventh Heritage Day this Saturday.

“We’re pleased that we can participate to provide more land-based activities, for families in particular, because there are lots of wonderful things to see, but for many of them you have to be on the water. So the Heritage Day allows us to give exposure to many things,” center director Harriet Webster said.

The center’s exhibits and aquarium will be open free of charge throughout the day, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Canada’s Bluenose II will be berthed at the center from tomorrow through Monday and will offer free public deck tours Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and at other times to be decided throughout the weekend. Other vessels docked at the center and available for dockside viewing include the Roseway, the Pride of Baltimore and the Unicorn.

Sail Training Opportunity Announcement:

Cape Ann’s Youth are Invited to Apply

In celebration of the 25th Mayor’s Cup Race, the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce and Sail Gloucester are offering spots for youth aged 13 to 21 aboard participating schooners. Sail training spots are available on a
first come, first serve basis in response to this invitation. In 2009, SailGloucester, an initiative organized from the City of Gloucester’s Mayors Office, is supporting the 25th Annual Gloucester Schooner festival, organized by the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce, in a joint mission with local sailing and maritime organizations to ensure the sail training spots are available to Gloucester and Cape Ann youth. Volunteers from SailGloucester will be coordinating the Youth Sail Training program as well as being visible with information desks or kits at information distribution points during the 25th Annual Gloucester Schooner Festival.  With limited spaces available aboard the vessels, and as time is of the essence, please ensure that this invitation and information is circulated to your organization’s leadership for sail training programs in order that your eligible young people are invited to your membership with a request that all interested youth reply to this email as soon as possible, and no later than September 1, 2009.

Working On The Rigging- Schooner Work

They were doing some big time work up in the rigging.  This cat was way up there disconnecting some stays that connected the two masts.  Barefoot.  My knees would be knocking so hard if I got 10 feet off the ground, never-mind way up at the top of the mast like this. Schooner Festival is coming this weekend- don’t forget!   If you haven’t been down to see it yet we have some insider tips coming for you later from Daisy Nell, Chairperson of the Gloucester Schooner Festival 09

Here’s a classic from last year’s Schooner Festival.  I captured Virginia Skipper Andy Reay-Ellers just before the Schooner Race for a great interview-

Crew Aboard The Bluenose II

Work Work Work.  These girls were covered in some type of polish or something or other.  It ain’t all fun and games aboard the Bluenose II.

Engine Room Aboard The Bluenose II

Ken Sutton, Chief Engineer In The Engine Room Of The Bluenose II

Spotless down in the engine room as you would expect aboard The Bluenose II.

Very cramped area to work on the engines compared to the Gloucester draggers that we’ve done videos of in their engine rooms. That is to be expected as The Bluenose II was built and designed as a sailing schooner first and not a powered vessel.

Wheel Of The Bluenose II Polished and Shiny

I got down to see the Bluenose II three different random times and guess what?  Every time I was there for 15 minutes during a coffee break someone was polishing the wheel.

Lot’s Of Work Aboard The Bluenose II

It was the perfect weather, lots of sun and a gentle breeze. You’d think that working on one of these schooners it would be time to kick back after the race and enjoy the rest of the day.

Not the case.

The crew was busting it out. Working their butts off. I took pictures early this morning when the boat’s deck was all shiny and gleaming. By the time all the spectators had walked the decks along with the race, the deck was all scuffed up and I imagine there won’t be any rest til she’s back all shiny again.
