Spirit of Massachusetts was launched on April 28, 1984 at the Charleston Navy Yard in Boston, Massachusetts. She is modeled after the 1889 fishing schooner Fredonia, designed by Edward Burgess. The Gloucester fishing schooners were widely known as "fast and able" vessels, and Fredonia was widely known for her speed. Spirit of Massachusetts proudly upholds that tradition to this day.

Spirit of Massachusetts was built by her original owners for service as a sail training vessel for young people. She also served as a good-will ambassador for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts from 1984 until 1987. Ocean Classroom Foundation began chartering Spirit for our own educational programs in 1997, and subsequently purchased her in 2000.

Sharon Lowe Schooner Festival Blooper Reel

I got an email from Sail Gloucester organizer and event planner extraordinaire Ally O’Connor inviting me to go out on the lead boat to cover the Schooner parade yesterday morning.  I would have loved to have gone, picturing all the incredible footage that could be shot aboard the boat with the water cannons leading the schooners out of the harbor.

Being Labor Day weekend there was no way for me to get away from the dock so I asked if Sharon could go to cover it for GMG and Ally told us she would love to have her aboard.

Now for the back-back story.

For some reason I crave video.  I think it’s because I know there’s going to be a lot of great photography out there and I like to get personal-  especially when I can bring the viewers someplace that other people don’t have access to.

With my work schedule this time of year I can rarely get to the big events that Sharon covers so well.  So I beg her to bring my video camera.  She always is reluctant to take it but being the great teammate that she is, she will sometimes oblige.

So here it is- unedited.  I didn’t change anything,  only copied the video clips she took from the memory stick into the video.  If nothing else you might be able to get some tips on how not to take video.   As good as Sharon is with still photography, video is just not her thing.

Tip 1) hold the camera horizontal when taking video. Click pic to view-
