A little dash of red brightens any scene

a little dash of red

That is one determined sailor.  He has been out there even on the most frigid days to brighten up Smiths Cove, along with Mysis, the tug, fish shack, and whatever that other red thing is by the house boat.

Wild and Wooly Wonson Cove

Generally such a quiet gentle cove.  A day after the storm ended, the tide and waves are still high and very cold looking.

A Badelynge of Buffleheads

badelynge of buffleheads

OK technically it is a raft or paddling of buffleheads since they are in the water, but I just couldn’t pass up using badelynge (pronounced bad-ling), which refers a group of ducks on land.  Buffleheads are my favorite little sea duck, and I have the pleasure of regularly seeing this group on Smiths Cove from my window.

Buffleheads have evolved their small size in order to fit into the nesting cavity of their “metabiotic” host, the Northern Flicker.  Due to their small size, they are highly active, diving almost continuously.  They do not tend to collect in large flocks; but are usually limited to small rafts.  One duck will serve as a sentry, watching for predators as the others in the group dive in search of food.  Buffleheads are among the last waterfowl to leave their breeding grounds and one of the world’s most punctual migrants, arriving on their wintering grounds within a narrow margin of time each year.  Buffleheads are monogamous, and the females return to the same breeding site, year after year.  (adapted from Wikipedia)

Rocky Neck is so Pretty in Winter

Rocky Neck is so Pretty in Winter

This being my first winter on Rocky Neck, I thought I might miss how pretty Annisquam is in the snow.  In addition to having a fun and active community that doesn’t hibernate in winter, Rocky Neck is as pretty as Annisquam, and cooler.  I am very happy being here year round.

High Tide As the Storm Subsides on Rocky Neck

high tide after the storm

That was one noisy storm – the howling kept waking me up all night.  I got up a little after midnight to look out the window and see what the storm high tide was like, but it was too dark and blurred by the snow to see anything, and I wasn’t going out there.  I did get out to walk Rocky Neck at high tide today as the storm subsided.  We had a lot of snow in some places, and none in others due to the high winds and drifting.  The cars in the public lot were blown totally clean, so there was no car cleaning to do.  The park was flooding a little, as was Rocky Neck Ave, Madfish and the Railways.  I would not want that to be my car sitting up to the wheel wells in salt water in the Madfish parking lot.

Anyone that bailed on it this year because of the arctic temps can just erase themselves from the past few years of mild Polar Plunge’s.  This Year’s Plungers Earned It!

Huge Thanks To Coastal Dog For Sponsoring 5 of their Killer Compression?Dry Swimsuits.  No sooner was I out of the water with a little waggle and the suit was practically dry.  No sand stuck in my butt crack due to the inner compression short lining and I’ve never ever ever worn such comfortable swim trunks.  I won’t ever wear anything else but Coastal Dog Apparel Swim trunks.  Check them out here- www.coastaldogapparel.com

Christmas Eve!

Christmas Eve! I took this photo at a Christmas party on East Main Street, looking across Smith Cove. The sailboat was decorated with lights, as was the crane at Bickford's boat yard on Rocky Neck. Co-owner Marco Taormina did that every year. He was a gruff but likable character. He loved to drink his "green grenades," which were bottles of Heineken beer.

Rocky Neck Show Features You. Are. Beautiful. Photographs

joe with a brass earring

The Cultural Center at Rocky Neck is presenting a solo exhibition of 30 photographs by Thi Linh Wernau, a Rockport-based artist and photographer. The work is from Wernau’s project “You. Are. Beautiful.,” featuring portraits which celebrate the human spirit and beauty in all people. The show opens on October 24 and runs through November 11.  It will feature four events during the three-week period.

Stop in this weekend, Saturday-Sunday, October 26-27 from 2-4 PM, for the photobooth event. You can have your polaroid portrait taken by the artist, and your voice can become part of the project.  You will receive one polaroid portrait to take home and one image will be added to the polaroid installation in the gallery.

“You. Are. Beautiful.” depicts portraits of everyday people with grit, grace and gravity. A wounded Marine and amputee, a stage-three breast cancer survivor or a skater are all celebrated for their own beauty and spirit. Wernau created this body of work from her travels photographing strangers and a few people she knew. The artist asked all of them to complete the statement, “I am beautiful because…” Moved by the power of a simple phrase, Wernau also included the phrase “you are beautiful” into each person’s set of portraits. Wernau’s primary mission with this project is “to spread love and kindness.”

Don’t miss these other upcoming events:

SAT, NOV 2 OPENING RECEPTION 4-6 PM
