From Dave Sag – Thursday Night Blues Party @ the Rhumb Line

This Thursday at the Rumline we  have Mr’ Steve Sadler, he of the searing guitar and monotone joke delivery. Steve’s an old pal of ours from the old days and we’re always glad to see him. You may remember the Barking Sharks, Steve’s last band around these parts before  he took off to see the world. And now he’s back!
Backing him up will be Mr. Greg Dann, drumnist for Secret Cervix and all around nice guy, and, of course, Greg T. and myself. An enjoyable nite!

And don’t forget: all you under-employed folks with time to spare, c’mon  down to the Rose Baker Senior Center next Monday for some swingin’ jazz and dixieland courtesy of the ol’ Salty Jazz Band. I’ll be there. Blast off is at 1 Pm

And Sunday, I’ll be up at Glenn’s Cool Bar and Restaurant in Nbpt. From 6 to 9 p.m. playing with this groovy band consisting of my buddies Justin Quinn, on vocals and harp, and his entire aggravation including Jon Ross on gooeytar, Per Hanson, the scariest drummer I’ve ever played with, and Curtis “Lemay” Haines, the Mayor of Nbpt. and a fine stride pianist. “Got a special show for y’all this week as I drag my dearest friend, John Rankin, out of the slickery swamp of Louisiana and wring  him dry on  Fred’s font of perpetual resurrection: the Rhumb Line. Educator, performer, vocalist, citizen, weekend father, this guy can do it all, and at the same time, too. He’ll be digging deep into that good ol’  Nawlins pile of steaming R&B, and throwin’ in a coupla originals to boot. You gotta hear this.

Behind him, pushing the beat will be our old buddy, Forrest “gump” Padgett on heart attack drums, Paul  Ahlstrand on tenor twelve sax, and yers trooly on base. C’mon down and tell John how much you like my punctuation!”

“Big fun this week as Justin Quinn returns for a nite of Chicago-style blues. Justin is a fine harpist and vocalist and has great cowboy boots. He’ll be burnin’ his leather on  the floor with the likes of Jon Ross, formerly Duke Robillard’s bassist, now on guitar; got that old sound goin’…. and Per Hanson, James Cotton’s drummer on…guess….drums! Greg and I will be there too, meddling and obfuscating our way thru the furrows of the blues.

This is a great unit….some of you may have purchased a CD last time around. Bring some cash and buy another one  this time , you won’t be disappointed!

Again, I lost a lot of my fan files, so if you know someone who wants in, send ’em to me!”

KBGM Release Party Reminder

Singer/songwriter Dan King will perform with David Brown, Dave Mattacks, and Wolf Ginandes for their Boston CD release party at Atwoods Tavern in Cambridge on Thursday, July 30 and in Gloucester at Elliotts at the Blackburn on Friday, July 31. The band, also known as KBMG, will play in support of their latest studio album, Western Color. KBMG played most recently to a fantastic audience at the Berklee Performance Center and are pleased to be back in Boston.

Their first combined full-length studio effort, Western Color, overflows with wasted love, light, rumors, and castaways—a ragged journey of sound and story combining folk, rock, and roots influences.

A highly anticipated album, Western Color evokes the tangled landscape of northern New England’s rugged working class, crashing waves and ultra violet sunsets; and is the culmination of efforts from some of the best artists in the area.

CD’s will be available for purchase. Featuring new hits, Goodnight Romeo, When it Comes Down to Love, Raggedy and more!

Visit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ud7NoYKz_9A for the Goodnight Romeo video

Thanks and see you soon!

Captain Carlo’s this Week!

Thursday: Greenhead

Come and see Greenhead in their Captain Carlo’s debut. “Greenhead” is two guys (Mike and Chuck) who play acoustic guitar, sing harmonies and do a range of music from upbeat rock and roll to mellow brunch and dinner music. Greenhead’s song-list includes Stevie Ray Vaughan, Johnny Cash, John Mayer, The Beatles, Weezer, Ryan Adams, Snow Patrol, James Taylor, Plain White Ts, Jack Johnson, Elvis Costello, Lyle Lovett, and more.

Friday: JOSHUA TREE

As The Nation’s premier tribute to U2, The Joshua Tree pride themselves with their ability to generate a unique musical experience that does not lend itself to impersonations.

Without compromising artistic integrity, the band has gone to great lengths to reproduce the distinct sound of one of the world’s most popular rock bands. Unique to The Joshua Tree is their dedication to the entire U2 songbook, including early fan favorites from the 1980-1987 period (Boy, October, War, The Unforgettable Fire, and The Joshua Tree).

Playing each song with the same intensity and emotion, the band covers all phases of U2’s career from their first album Boy to the most recent, No Line on the Horizon.

Now Joshua Tree comes to Captain Carlo’s this Friday July 24th out on the deck and under the stars. Tell all your friends about this one it’s going to be a great night of music.

Saturday: The Herland Brothers Band

Boston based THE HERLAND BROTHERS BAND is a top-notch cover/original band, meticulously performing the greatest Rock/Dance hits of yesteryear and today. Since 1994 HB’s high energy cover performances continue to wow and electrify audiences from Maine to New York, with their unique ability to cover all genres vocally and musically, matching the original artist renditions. The band’s original music continues to also excite, leading the Boston Globe to write “A band on the rise with a bright future”. The HB band has performed as either the headliner and/or as an opener for national acts all over the Northeast, including shows at the legendary CBGB’s in New York City.

Sunday: 5pm to 8pm DJ scottie Mac

Last night’s CD Release Party with Chelsea!

Chelsea9:00pm – Dog Bar was packed. Chelsea Berry was setting up for a night of music promoting her new CD.  With a keen sense of humor and bluntness, the singer-songwriter kept the audience entertained for hours. She sang her own songs as well as covers that were meaningful to her. More than once, the only sound in the room was Chelsea’s  incredible music. Her cover of Susan Werner’s “May I Suggest” brought tears to many listeners’ eyes. She invited Pete Lindberg, Bradley Royds and a cast of others to round out the night. What a show!

Go listen for yourself at the Rhumb Line around 7:30 Sunday night where she’ll be playing with friend and cohort Pete Lindberg. You’ll be glad you did.

You can read more about Chelsea in Mike Lindberg’s (Pete’s dad) post here on GMG.

Rhumb Line’s Thursday Night’s Blues Party, Saturday at Lat 43, Sunday outta town

From Dave Sag

Whew! A busy week ahead as I plow myself even deeper into the electrical field, so, here goes:
Thursday nite at the Rumline: We got ‘er again: Ms. Lisa Marie, The unobliviated Queen of da blooz, Hip-shakin’ her way thru yet another evening of frenzy. Backing her up will be our old friend and keyboard octopus, Mr. Cliff Spencer. Also, Forrest”Frosty” Padgett on the drumbulators as well as Greg T. on glitar.  Me, myself and I complete this five piece septet. Another great nite!
Then,on Saturday nite, look out  for miasmic gas attacks, as I hit the stage at Blat 43 to make a mess out of the Mike O’connell band. Joey Scrima’s drumbing, with Mike and Jat Appt trying to keep it cool. Fat chance.

THIS THURSDAY

From Dave Sag on the Rhumb Line’s Thursday Night Blues Party

This Thursday at the Rumline we proudly present Mr. Steve Sadler, raconteur and excellent glitarist and vocalizer. Y’all may remember him from the days of the BARKING SHARKS, local rockabilly-goats and rave-up x-spurts. Backing him up will be Jeff Casper, the friendly drummer, and, of course, Greg T. on catarrh and yours truly on first base.
And Saturday I’m proud to say that I’ll be playing at the First Church of Newbury right on Rt. 1a in Newbury, a short ride from town with an All star lineup of Justin Quinn on harp and vocals, Jon Ross on glitar, Curtis Haynes on keys and Per Hanson on drumps. This is a really good band, and we’ll be cranking out all our hits from Justin’s new CD. Start time is 8 pm. There is home cooking available.
Admission is 10 bux. Get outa town and boogie to the primal beat!
Hope to see you there!

Rhumb Line Striper Tournament Third Place Fish- Brady Kain

Rhumb Line Striper Tournament First Place Winner Lou Biondo

Thanks to Story Reed for this report from The Rhumb Line Striper Tournament-

The Fourth Annual Rhumb Line Striper Tournament was held on Saturday, August 2nd. 95 people participated. Fish had to be weighed-in at The Rhumb Line parking lot between 3:30 and 5:00 pm. Roughly 15 fish were weighed-in by the volunteer tournament staff. The rain held off until about 4:30 but didn’t deter any of the participants from having a good time watching the weigh-in and enjoying the barbecue. The Junior Division was won by Conner Quinn with a 17 lb 7 oz Striper. Conner won a rod and reel for first place. Conner also won two raffle prizes and went home with the tournament banner! 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes were given out in the Adult Division winning $600, $200, and $100 respectively. 3rd place went to Brady Kain with a 33 lb 1 oz Striper. 2nd place went to Mark Vona with a 34 lb 1 oz fish. 1st place went to Lou Biondo of Gloucester with a huge 39 lb 15 oz fish. It was a great turn out and we hope for an equally fun time next year for the 5th Annual Rhumb Line Striper Tournament.
