Chickity Check It!- Marty’s Son Brian Has His Own Photo A Day For 365 Project Going

Brian reminded me yesterday whene he stopped down the dock that I used to refer to Marty as the other guy, having known Brian through his New York Waterblog a full year or two before Marty decided to move here and make all the rest of us look like amateur photographers.

It was two years ago now that I met Marty when he made that fateful trip with Brian to Gloucester for the Dory raffle from Upstate New York and Brooklyn-

Top Pick For Saturday- VIEW THE LAUNCH OF THE SCHOONER ARDELLE FROM THE ESSEX SHIPBUILDING MUSEUM

SATURDAY, JULY 9 STARTING AT 3:00 PM

Join us at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum’s Shipyard on Saturday, July 9, 2011 to view the launching of the Pinky Schooner Ardelle that is being built by Harold A. Burnham, an eleventh generation Essex shipwright. On Labor Day 2010 we celebrated the signing of her keel and the raising of her first frames. It was an exciting day and all who attended had a great time. Harold is now ready to launch the Schooner Ardelle and we will be there to celebrate.

It’s not often that wooden schooners are launched anywhere in this country, and we are fortunate to have in Essex a craftsman who knows how to build a wooden schooner the same way they were built centuries ago. Harold Burnham and a band of volunteers have spent the last 10 months building this vessel. They’ve been outside in snow storms, rain, and blistering heat. On Saturday, July 9th between 6 – 7 pm she will finally hit the water using the time honored, and exciting, Essex side launch. The Essex Shipbuilding Museum is one of the best places to view a launch from the H.A. Burnham Boatbuilding yard, and we plan on celebrating. Starting at 3 pm we will have live music from Michael Forney’s Bluegrass Band, Daisy Nell and Captain Stan and the second graders from Essex Elementary will perform songs from “The Stowaway Mouse”, hot dogs and Italian sausages from Kayem, chowder from Woodman’s of Essex , and all kinds of beverages. So, mark your calendars and join us!

GMG SCOOP! SCOOP! From Marty Luster

A crew from the tug CREOLE MISS, owned and operated by Riverside and Pickering Marine Contractors of Eliot Maine, today successfully removed the bell buoy that washed up on Coffins Beach in March. The work began at 11AM and the buoy was freed and towed away at about 1PM. Exclusive photos here:

Meet The Lusters

Meet Marty and Barbara Luster and hear their story about how it came to be that they moved to Gloucester after 34 years in the same house in Ithaca NY

Welcome Home Marty and Barbara 🙂

Welcome To Gloucester Marty!

Back on October 3 Marty luster came to Gloucester with his son Brian, a Brooklynite who runs the fantastic water blog A Movable Bridge

Brian came to Gloucester with his dad Marty and attended the International Dory seaon wrap up party and dory raffle determined to win the dory.

Marty fell so in love with Gloucester after just one visit he determined he had to move here.

He landed the day before yesterday and I’m sure he is deep into unpacking boxes and all that goes with a big move. But i wanted to welcome him.

welcome welcome welcome!

Here’s some video from the night marty arrived in Gloucester which he probably didn’t know at the time but ended up being a huge crossroad in his life.

Marty has his own site as well as son Brian-

All It Takes Is One Visit

Back on October 3 New York waterblogger Brian Luster came up to visit Gloucester with his dad Marty.

Here’s what has transpired since-

From Brian-

Remember the other day when I mentioned that my parents were making an offer on a house in Gloucester?  Well, they have a deal, and if everything goes as planned they’ll be moving to Gloucester in the spring.  I’m having trouble believing it.  My father made that one weekend visit there with me in October, and the next thing I know, he’s moving there.
Hope you had a nice Thanksgiving, and I guess I’ll be visiting again before too long.

Here’s Brian’s bike- Representing of course!
Here’s the text from the day after Brian and Marty had left Gloucester for New York-
October 3, 2009

I’ve had the pleasure to hang out with Brian Luster and his dad Marty from A Moveable Bridge.  We went to breakfast yesterday and got to talk blogging and boats and breakfast and food and all kinds of other good stuff like the difference between “partners” and girlfriends and how some people call their long time girlfriends partners even though they’re not gay.

I discovered Brian’s blog last year after Schooner Festival when I had done an interview with some of the crew members on the Lettie G Howard.  There are a group of bloggers from New York who are a pretty incestuous group.  They all post on each other’s blogs and have similar interests.  (sort of the way I comment on Jay, Kathleen and Steve B’s blogs)

Well here are some of the New York Waterfront Bloggers blogs that I think you ought to know about because they post some pretty interesting stuff that is similar to what we’re doing up here in Gloucester.  I normally wouldn’t give these fucking New York people the time of day (especially given their propensity to root for the Yankees, Jets and Giants).  But since I’ve met Brian and Marty and they seem like regular folk just like us I’ll give ‘em a pass on the whole Evil Empire thing.

I’m hoping Brian can organize a field trip of sorts with these New York waterfront bloggers for next year’s Schooner Festival so I can get to meet them and host them for a Beer and Blog event.

Check out these blogs if you get a chance, if you like what we do here on GMG you ought to dig the New York versions too (even if they are FUCKING NEW YORKERS).

Well Marty- Welcome To Gloucester!  Glad we showed you a good enough time that you decided to pick up roots and move on out to the greatest place on earth.

Chickity Check It- Marty Luster Captures Gloucester

Marty Luster came to town last weekend with son and FOB Brian Luster from A Movable Bridge

Marty is a serious photographer from upstate New York.  We got to hang out at the dory raffle and then the next morning when I brought the boys to George’s for breakfast.  When Brain and Marty stopped down the dock they got a treat because Jay Albert was here so they got to talk photography and blogging while I worked, lol.

So anyway when we went to breakfast we got to talking about Marty’s photography and I told him to be sure to send me a link to his pictures that he took of Gloucester once he gets home and has time to upload them.

You never know what people are going to take pictures of when they are here.  There’s so many pretty things and industrial things, you just never know what perspective someone takes when they are from out of town and what they see through the lens.

Marty sent me the link to his Gloucester photos and he sent it to Jay also.  Jay said something to me yesterday about Marty that was dead on- That Marty captured the essence of Gloucester as a working port.  True dat.
