The Red Shed Film Fest in Rockport!

Coming up on Monday, the 16th! Local filmmakers will showcase their work in a micro-film fest, the Red Shed Film Fest (in honor of the Motif in honor of Motif No.1 Day in honor of the arts…).

Starting at 7pm , short films will screen in Rockport Music’s beautiful Shalin Liu Performance Center. A party on the 3rd floor will follow the screening, with a cash bar and light food from the legendary Willow Rest. By “party” I mean: party, Rockport-style, where we stay up past 8pm, so bear this in mind in terms of your expectations. This doesn’t mean it won’t be fun, maybe even raucous! By Rockport standards! Which is still great!

The Red Shed Film Fest is a small but mighty showcase for our burgeoning local film scene. If you like short films and can tolerate other people and want to support art, this event is for YOU!

Come out to the Red Shed Film Fest on May 16th. The RSFF kicks off the week leading up to Motif No.1 Day on Saturday, and is a great way to begin the week. Admission is suggested donation. Your donations support the free programming of the Motif No.1 Day festival, celebrating Rockport across the arts, featuring film, dance, music and poetry. For more info on the fest go to www.rockportexchange.org.

Lisa Marie to Host The Dave Sag’s Blues Party Tonight! The Rhumb Line 8:30pm 4.28.2016 The Joint will be jumpin!

lisa marie

Dave says,

Well,I’ve signed up for elective surgery on my flabby elbow skin (hetero-weenisectomy) this Thursday and will be be busy recuperating with a Martini or three, so , in the meantime, why not stop holding your breath and inhale a little bit of Ms. Lisa Marie who will be charging in on her caparisoned horse, lance aboiling ,to skewer you with another night of electro-convulsive blues, and other music. And she’s bringing along the right people. She’s got Johnny Juxo to bang his shoe on the keyboard, “Silverfish” Steve on scratchy catarrh, and Dana “Bonefish” Bonardi on the bangulators. Sounds like a plan. Me, I’ll be showing up late in my black suit, in case you wanna see what I look like when I buy the farm! (minus the formaldehyde).

Formed in 1999 by lead guitarist JJ Rassler (founding member of influential Boston bands DMZ and guitarist / producer for The Queers) and singer/rhythm guitarist Jen D’Angora (The Dents, Jenny Dee and the Deelinquents), along with bassist Mike Yocco and drummer Dan Styklunas, The Downbeat 5 draws on British invasion bands like the Yardbirds and Animals, spikes the brew with the toughest female vocals this side of a women’s prison riot, and tops it all off with decades worth of aggression, attitude and volume. The band is often heard on Little Steven’s Underground Garage and is featured on his “Coolest Songs in the World” compilation series. The DB5 have shared the stage with such acts as; Holly Golightly, Magic Christian, The Hoodoo Gurus, The Pretty Things, The Knitters, The Blasters, The Zombies, Flaming Stars, Preachers Kids, Muffs, Dick Dale, Detroit Cobras, Sylvain Sylvain, Jayne County and countless like minded bands. Their relentlessly tough live shows have sometimes been augmented with the guest appearance of friend and Animals guitarist, Hilton Valentine.

Nat Osborn Band This Friday @ MinglewoodAtLat43 9pm 4.8.2016 Oh yeah! Be ready to dance…

Nat Osborn Band

http://natosborn.com/

MUSIC:
The King and The Clown is on iTunes/Spotify
Nat Osborn Band EP on Bandcamp

BIO:

Nat Osborn, “the mastermind behind the suitably named Nat Osborn Band, writes smart, punchy tunes that blend old-school Gershwin-era songcraft with decidedly modern sensibilities.” (Popdose)

The seven-piece band, flanked by a powerful three piece horn section, takes the best elements of soul, funk, indie-rock, and jazz and weaves them around Osborn’s truly infectious and clever songs. The band has rcently returned from a three month stint in Europe supporting their April 2015 self-titled EP release on Rope-A-Dope Records.

The band released their debut album, The King and The Clown, in April 2013 to a sold out crowd at Le Poisson Rouge in New York. Following the release, the band toured tirelessly playing 200+ live shows between the United States and Europe. They have appeared at, and often headlined, festivals on both sides of the Atlantic and been on television in seven countries, all while operating as a hard working independent act.

“The Nat Osborn Band has a rare knack for existing simultaneously in several different places at once” – The Deli NYC

“Eclectic, smart, high energy, Osborn gets his fingers into a whole bunch of different pies here and comes up with something good every time” – New York Music Daily

“Wow! What a sound” Artie Lange, live on the Artie Lange show

“The inability to label Osborn with any one specific genre lent greatly to his appeal. Dramatic vocal runs, rolling exotic and ghostly horn melodies, and even blues fueled guitar binges; Osborn fit it all into his tightly packed arrangements. With vocal theatrics likened to Muse, and playful horn runs a la Beirut, Osborn folded different genres into his compelling repertoire.” -Flush the Fashion.

Dave Birkin Tonight! The Dave Sag’s Blues Party @ The Rhumb Line 8:30pm 4.7.2016

dave-sag-rl-4-3-2014-1 (2)

We’re late celebrating Keaster this week as I offer you hipster replacement therapy in the guise of Mr. Dave Birkin. A newbie for you and me. I met this guy at a party where the wallpaper curled and houseplants died after a rousing set of heat-seeking blues and j**z got the audience wheezing and drooping in hysteresis. Just back from a perspirational visit to The Mount Of Olive Oyl, where he scored a pair of Roman sandals and a scutum real cheap, Dave will visibly shake you up with modern renditions of classic blues and jazz. He has a really great Sax sound. And he sings, too. I really mean this.

Blacking him up will be that nun-eating master of the gootar, Mr. Mike DiBari; our antidisestablishvegetarianism recipient of the year, and Mr. Chris Anzelone, a new piston-popping drummmbler, who’ll knock your block off. I’ve been looking forward to this for a long time and can’t wait to hear me cry “Uncle!” Do come!

RUNNING THREE WEEKENDS THRU APRIL 17
10% of PROCEEDS BENEFIT GLOUCESTER’S ANGEL PROGRAM
PLEASE TALK IT UP!Synopsis:
Former fisherman Abraham Wharf, now homeless, struggles with heroin addiction. It is midwinter, and he has set up his cardboard bed beneath the Babson “Never Try, Never Win” boulder in Gloucester’s long-abandoned settlement known as “Dogtown.” As he enters a drug-induced euphoric state, he edges ever closer to overdose and hypothermia. Two ghostly children appear through the trees, reaching out to Abraham. Unsure, Wharf decides to take their hands, allowing them to guide him deeper into the woods, and eventually into 1800 Dogtown Common and the home of Easter Carter. Here in her home, the only two-story house in the Commons, colorful residents of the Commons have gathered for warmth, for food, for community. Each character represents something within Wharf that leads him on an introspective journey of spirit survival. Three witches serve as a sort of Greek chorus, reminiscent of the three crones of mythology and Shakespeare’s Macbeth… here, they are the hissing voices of addiction: Dysphoria, Despair, and Redemption.
This groundbreaking inter-generational piece (actors ages 7-80) will raise the question: “What killed a 200 year-old community?” in a way that challenges us to avoid ever letting it happen again in Gloucester & Cape Ann.
Issues that are still universal hot topics today: ignorance, addiction, mental health, sexism, ageism, gossip, gender, homelessness, hunger, poverty and classism are all touched upon in this show.
Programs like The Open Door, Action Inc., The Grace Center, Wellspring, and Gloucester’s new Angel Program are all examples of how a community, through education understanding, and innovation can find healing and sustainability in ways that simply did not exist two hundred years ago. Indeed, if we knew then what we know now, and if these great organizations had existed in that time, Dogtown Commons might still be a thriving community today.
Each of the three production weeks, 10% of box office proceeds will benefit Gloucester’s newest community support organization, The Angel Program. Suggested donation $10-$30, as always, no one is turned away. Consider this show rated PG-13 due to mature theme.

Season tickets now available, just $15/mo!

This Thursday we offer significant symptom relief with the infusion of that Tootin’ Torquemada of the Tenor: Mr. Andrew Clark. Just back from an awesome Third Reiki Massage and gentle Acubeating session, I guarantee you he is limber and smood as greek Yohgurt. I just love his high energy and stylish hats. Loves to get the crowd dancin’. Might have a concussion, too.

Completing the circuit will be the lugubrious Mr. Jack Ward, on catarrh and vocalese, and the big Papi of Beverly, Mr. Andrew Jones, on jumper cables. This is never to be missed. See ya then!

Julie Rhodes Band this Friday @ Katrina’s April 1st 9pm This is no joke!

julie rhodes 1-2

Listen to Julie Rhodes on Beale Street Caravan while on tour…see what they have to say. I have had the opportunity to see Julie a few times and thank a good friend and music lover for turning me on to her last year. Powerful, gripping and full of songs one can certainly relate to.  Julie’s brand new and first CD “Bound To Meet The Devil” is one of the best records I own and that says a lot. This live recording just blew me away. Have a listen and hope to see you at Katrina’s this Friday.
