The Cape Ann YMCA presents Holiday Delights on December 15 at 7pm, December 16 at 2pm, and December 17 at 2pm at the Annisquam Village Hall, 34 Leonard Street, Gloucester, MA.
Set in Gloucester, Holiday Delights is a festive mix of stories, songs and dance celebrating the special traditions of other cultures and families as seen through a young child’s magical journey on Christmas Eve to discover what is really important during the holiday season. The 2023 edition of Holiday Delights features the journey of a young girl who discovers the spirit and the joys of the holiday season as she faces the unhappy prospect of leaving her beloved hometown of Gloucester and moving with her family to a new home in Michigan. Her special Christmas Eve journey helps her to realize and appreciate the importance of her family and friends as well as her own special holiday traditions. During her Christmas Eve travels with Mrs. Claus and the elves, she celebrates Hanukkah, travels back in time to turn of the century Gloucester to see her Italian-Irish ancestors celebrate the holidays, and meets famous characters including Young Ebenezer Scrooge and his little sister Fan from Charles Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol.
The 2023 production has a cast of over 40 actors age 5 to 15 from throughout the North Shore including Gloucester, Rockport, Beverly, Manchester-by-the-Sea, Beverly, Essex and Marblehead. Holiday Delights 2023 features MERMS student and Manchester resident Maya Khan as Mrs. Claus and Rockport’s Lyla O’Malley as the young girl she takes on the Christmas Eve journey. Gloucester’s Evalyn Copp and Lily Comeau are Peppermint and Mistletoe, Mrs. Claus’ loyal elf assistants. Essex 5th grader Sam Walsh and Gloucester 5th grader Quinn O’Neil are also featured in the production as the supervisors of Santa’s Workshop.
A Cape Ann holiday tradition Holiday Delights is conceived and directed by Gloucester native, award winning actress and Harvard University graduate Heidi Dallin, the YMCA of the North Shore Theatre Specialist. Since the production’s premiere in 2007 over 675 young people from Cape Ann and beyond have appeared in Holiday Delights through the years. The Holiday Delights Cast performed at the grand finale of Sen Bruce Tarr’s annual Toy Drive on Dec 7th at Cape Ann Savings Bank. Cape Ann YMCA Executive Director Erina McWilliam -Lopez spoke about all the holiday happenings at the CAY. “The cast sang (wearing our just delivered Holiday Delights 2023 T-Shirts) and were wonderful!” adds Heidi Dallin.

The 2023 Holiday Pops Concert led by CAS Conductor and Music Director Yoichi Udagawa features a program of holiday favorites and welcomes back Boston’s preeminent gospel performer Renese King. King last performed with CAS in 2012. Ms. King’s array of musical talents have taken her from spiritual and gospel singing at the church podium to timpani playing on the Carnegie Hall stage. She has toured internationally as a percussionist, pianist, and vocalist with a number of Massachusetts based choral and orchestral ensembles. But, it is her soulful and unforgettably moving voice that has piqued her national reputation.
“Our Holiday Pops 2023 will feature a lot of great music to get into the spirit of the Holidays for the whole family,” says Maestro Udagawa, ” We are also thrilled to have Gospel sensation Renese King join us at these concerts. Maestro Udagawa has planned a program of holiday favorites for the 2023 Holiday Pops including Anderson’s Christmas Festival , Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel Overture, Tchaikovsky’s Selections from The Nutcracker, Christmas Favorites arranged by Chase, Festive Sounds of Hannukah arranged by Holcomb and a selection of holiday favorites performed by gospel sensation Renese King. A CAS Holiday Pops tradition, all the concerts end with the annual audience Holiday Singalong.
Renese King’s array of musical talents has taken her from spiritual and gospel singing at the church podium to timpani playing on the Carnegie Hall stage. Her soulful, moving voice garnered her a Boston Music Award as Gospel/Inspirational Artist of the Year. Often singing her own arrangements, King has performed with many ensembles in the New England area and across the nation. Her voice is featured on the soundtracks of three award-winning PBS documentary films (Emmy, Peabody, and Sundance awards):Freedom Riders(2011), Freedom Summer(2014), and Tell Them We Are Rising(2018). She appears regularly with the Boston Pops, having been a featured and guest soloist in concerts at Symphony Hall and on the Esplanade, in television broadcasts, and on the 2004 CD Sleigh Ride, alongside the Boston Pops Orchestra, Tanglewood Festival Chorus, and Boston Pops Gospel Choir. Renese King is the Executive Assistant to the Vice -President of Berklee College of Music and serves as director of the New England Gospel Ensemble in Boston. She graduated from Berklee in 1990 and from Atlantic Union College in 1987.
Founded in Gloucester in 1951, the Cape Ann Symphony is a professional orchestra of over 70 players from throughout the New England area. They perform a subscription season of four concerts per year plus several Pops and youth concerts. The Symphony Board of Directors named Yoichi Udagawa the Music Director and Conductor of the Cape Ann Symphony in the summer of 2000 after a yearlong search. In addition to his leadership of Cape Ann Symphony, he is Music Director and Conductor of the Melrose Symphony Orchestra, and the Quincy Symphony Orchestra and a cover conductor at the Boston Pops Orchestra. Frequently invited to guest conduct, Mr. Udagawa has worked with many different orchestras including the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra, Nobeoka Philharmonic Orchestra, the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra of Boston, the University of Texas Symphony Orchestra, the Indian Hill Symphony, the Garden State Philharmonic, the Brown University Orchestra, the Syracuse Society for New Music, the Boston Conservatory Orchestra, the Midcoast Symphony Orchestra, the Newton Symphony, the Austin Civic Orchestra, and the Mid-Texas Symphony. Mr. Udagawa is at home in popular and contemporary music as well as the standard symphonic repertoire. He is known for his relaxed manner and ability to speak from the podium which has helped new audiences as well as enthusiasts gain a greater appreciation for symphonic music. His programs often include premieres of new works – some specially commissioned for the orchestra — as well as great orchestral works across the symphonic repertoire and lively Pops programs. He is also an integral part of the Cape Ann Symphony Youth Outreach programs to area schools.

Cape Ann Symphony’s Musicians Unleashed Series celebrates Halloween with a spooky concert of ghostly music featuring a quartet of Cape Ann Symphony’s principal string players: Seth MacLeod, Cello; CAS Concert Master Scott Moore, violin; Erica Pisaturo, violin; and Brandon White, viola; playing a program of creative and varied compositions ranging from Schubert’s String Quartet No. 14: Death and the Maiden to a pop medley of Stevie Wonder’s Superstition, Gnarls Barkley’s Crazy and Michael Jackson’s Thriller to Spooky Waltz, a piece written by CAS violinist & Concert Master Scott Moore.
“Our program for October 28 features an adventurous variety of music, which really showcases the talent and versatility of the Cape Ann Symphony’s principal string players,” explains Moore. “From cheeky, spooky fun, to the truly tragic; from Schubert and Shostakovich to Doc Watson and Gnarls Barkley…there’s something here for any music lover, and it’s all bound together by the theme and title piece, Danse Macabre.”

ABOUT THE MUSICIANS
Scott Moore was born and came of age in rural Kentucky. He began his career as a violinist and composer as a four-year-old in New York. He’s been a soloist with a number of orchestras, played Mozart for the Archduke of Austria, and has given an impromptu recital in Carnegie Hall for an audience of ghosts. In 2018, he began performing, from memory, the complete Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin by J. S. Bach. A composer as well, he has composed six adventurous new scores for the Louisville Ballet, including As You Like It in August 2022. This native Kentuckian is now a resident of Gloucester. He and his wife violinist Erica Pisaturo, also a member of CAS, moved to New England in the fall of 2019.
Violinist Erica Pisaturo is a native of New England, where she began her violin studies at the age of four. After earning a BA in Music and Art History from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, she went on to earn an MFA at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia. While in the South, Ms. Pisaturo played violin in a number of professional symphony orchestras, including the Hilton Head Symphony and Savannah Philharmonic, both of which she also served as Orchestra Librarian. She has toured and traveled the world extensively including studying architecture in Italy, making music on tour in China and Japan. She and her husband, CAS violinist Scott Moore moved to Gloucester in 2019 and Ms. Pisaturo now plays with the Cape Ann Symphony and Symphony By The Sea.
Cellist Seth MacLeod earned his Bachelor of Music in cello performance from Boston University, where he studied with George Neikrug who dedicated to Seth a cadenza he composed for the Dvořák Cello Concerto. In September Mr. MacLeod joined the Cape Ann Symphony as Principal Cellist. He has performed as a soloist with the Wellesley Symphony, Lincoln-Sudbury Civic and the Metrowest Symphony Orchestras. Mr. MacLeod is also the principal cellist of the Wellesley Symphony Orchestra, and he is a member of Symphony By The Sea. He is a versatile chamber musician and string instructor at area schools.
Violist Brandon White made his CAS debut in March 2022’s Musicians Unleashed Concert, the Virtual Clarinet Quintet Concert. Originally from New York and now residing in the Boston area, Brandon White has enjoyed a varied career as a violist. A classically trained violist, Mr. White has been recognized as an analytical, and forward-thinking musician with a love of all viola music and new compositions. He holds degrees from The Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam where he studied under Shelly Tramposh and earned his BM in Viola Performance, as well as The Boston Conservatory at Berklee where he studied under Lila Brown and earned his MM in String Performance. He has performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Saratoga Performing Arts Center, Jordan Hall, and Sanders Theater and played with the Orchestra of Northern New York, Hamptons Festival Orchestra and the Choral Society of the Hamptons. Mr. White currently performs in the Rivers Symphony Orchestra and is also a member of the contemporary viola duo Waterhouse Row alongside Emilie Catlett.

The Sound of Music opened on Broadway in 1959–an instant smash hit and perennial cultural favorite ever since. It’s special when there’s any production on Cape Ann: Thanks to Russel Crouse, much of the stage musical was written during stints in their Annisquam neighborhood in Gloucester.

Beethoven’s Spring Sonata 4th Movement; Bach’s Cello Suite No 1, Prelude; Saint-Saens’ The Swan from The Carnival of the Animals (Le Carnaval des animaux); Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet 1st Movement which is Mozart’s only completed clarinet quintet, and is one of the earliest and best-known works written especially for the clarinet; George Gershwin’s Promenade; Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No. 10 for solo piano; Trenet-Weisenberg’s En Avril à Paris; Koussevitsky’s Valse Minature; and Dvorák’s String Quintet No. 2, 1st Movement.
About the Guest Artist, Tianhong Yang
Based in Boston, Chinese born pianist Tianhong Yang has made solo appearances in a number of prestigious festivals and venues across Europe, Asia and the USA. Yang made her UK debut in 2010 at the St. David’s Hall, Cardiff, performing Beethoven’s Third Piano Concerto, Op.37, under the direction of Maestro David Jones. Throughout Yang’s competition career, she has participated and won numerous top prizes in international piano competitions such as Liege International Piano Competition and Andree Charlier International Piano Competition. At the age of four, Yang started her piano lessons and continued her studies in the Middle School program at Wuhan Conservatoire of Music, then later was admitted to the High School of Central Conservatoire of Music in Beijing, China. After Yang’s intensive primary school training in China’s most prestigious conservatories she was awarded the inaugural Steinway Full Scholarship in 2009 to further her studies at the Royal Welsh College of Music under the tutelage of Richard McMahon. In 2013, Yang was invited to study with the Piano Legend, Dmitry Bashkirov, at Escuela Superior de Musica Reina Sofia in Spain and she was sponsored with a full scholarship by the Yamaha Europe Association and the Albeniz Foundation. Yang simultaneously began her master’s degree in performance at the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp, Belgium, with Polina Leschenko, and performance diploma program at the Accademia Pianistica Internazionale Incontri Col Maestro, Italy, with Vovka Ashkenazy and Boris Petrushansky. Yang also works closely with Chinese composer, Haofu Zhang, promoting Chinese-Western contemporary compositions. Yang is currently working on her doctoral degree in Piano Performance at Boston University, under the guidance of Pavel Nersessian.

Classes are divided by age: Professional Acting Basics for 5-9 year olds from 9 am to 11 am and Acting Intensive and Scene Study Workshop for 10 to 17 year olds from 12 pm until 3 pm. Enrollment is limited for both classes. Both classes are taught by Gloucester native Heid Dallin, an award-winning professional actress and Harvard University graduate.
Dallin is in the midst of directing 3 productions on Cape Ann: The Sound of Music Youth Edition at Manchester-Essex Middle School; Peter Pan Jr at East Gloucester Elementary School and Annie at West Parish Elementary School as well as preparing to direct 101 Dalmatians Kids Edition at Plum Cove School in June.

Cape Ann Symphony Celebrates
A SEASON OF RENEWAL
Cape Ann Symphony proudly announces the launch of the orchestra’s 71st concert season on Sunday, October 2 at 2:00 PM at Manchester-Essex High School Auditorium.
“We are so thrilled to be able to perform a full season schedule of orchestra concerts…. the first since 2019!’ says Cape Ann Symphony Board President Fran White. “After facing the challenges of the past two years, Cape Ann Symphony is stronger than ever due to the amazing support from the musicians, our Music Director, our tireless Board of Directors, our sponsors and donors, and finally, our loyal audiences! We look forward to gathering again in Manchester and Ipswich to celebrate the joy of music.”
The upcoming season features a celebration of three of the world’s preeminent composers, The Big Three: Mozart, Beethoven & Tchaikovsky and guest artist violinist Victor Romanul makes his CAS debut performing Tchaikovsky’s “unplayable” Violin Concerto to kick off the season in October 2022. The concerto was severely criticized and declared unplayable when it premiered. But audiences loved it and the concerto now is a mainstay of violin concertos.
The Cape Ann Symphony Chorus performs with the orchestra in the annual Holiday PopsConcertin November 2022; the return of Blaise Dejardin, Boston Symphony Orchestra’s Principal Cellist in March 2023, and the virtuoso pianist Michael Lewin to wrap up the season in May 2023.

Cape Ann Symphony kicks off the 71st season with three of music’s most renown composers Mozart, Beethoven and Tchaikovsky and guest artist Victor Romanul performing Tchaikovsky’s “unplayable”Violin Concerto in his CAS debut. The program also includes Mozart’s Magic Flute and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5.

TheHoliday Pops Concert, Cape Ann Symphony’s joyful holiday tradition, features a program of holiday favorites The Cape Ann Symphony Chorus under the direction of Rockport’s Wendy Betts joins the orchestra for this exciting celebration of holiday music including the annual audience sing-along.
BRAHMS, DVORAK & DEJARDIN

Cape Ann Symphony welcomes back Boston Symphony Orchestra Principal cellist Blaise Déjardin to play Dvorak’s Cello Concerto. Déjardin made his CAS debut in March 2017 with his acclaimed performance of Saint-Saens’ elegant Cello Concerto. The orchestra opens the concert with Brahms’ stirring Symphony No. 1 in c minor, a piece which he struggled with for 14 years to complete.
THE COLORS OF MUSIC
Performance: Sunday, May 14, 2023: 2:00 PM Manchester-Essex High School, Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA
The Colors of Music features legendary composers: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Joseph Haydn, and Johannes Brahms and guest artist Grammy winning virtuoso pianist Michael Lewin. The internationally acclaimed pianist has played in over 30 countries and commands a repertoire of over 40 piano concertos. Mr. Lewin joins CAS to play Brahms’ powerful Piano Concerto No. 1. The concert also includes Mozart’s joyous Marriage of Figaro Overture and Haydn’s delightful Symphony No. 101 “Clock.”
