On Tuesday, I was on Concord Street near the marsh. The sound of panicky chickens piqued my curiosity. There was a protected chicken coop below this beautiful bird. The chickens were ok, but they were nervous.

DANCE OF THE MARSH HAWKS
Marsh hawks gathered at night fall – a dozen or so Northern Harriers suddenly became visible, silhouetted against the orange sky, and seeming to hold a soiree of sorts.
Northern Harriers hunt during the day. They are the most owl-like of all hawks in that they hunt by sight and by sound. Northern Harriers even look a bit like Short-eared Owls.
Northern Harriers share the same habitat with Short-eared Owls. Skirmishes over territory between the two species often occur late in the day as the Harriers are settling in for the night and the Shorties are stepping out to hunt.

I FOUND SPRING!
On Cape Cod, that is. The south side of the Cape was about as stick-like as is Cape Ann, but the crocuses were coming up everywhere on the north side, with the yellow of a few daffodils peeking through, too. All along the marshes that border Rt. 6A, ospreys were constructing nests. From far across the marsh, I even caught a glimpse of a hawk fishing!

BEAUTIFUL HAWK AT NILES BEACH
I only had my cell phone with and wish so much my movie camera was back from the repair center. He/she was fairly high up in the tree so it’s really not that bad for a cell phone camera. The hawk did not at all seem to mind my interest and stayed for a while before flying towards the Lighthouse.

Sorry, Hawk, Easter is Over!
It must be spring because the Schraffts left work/school yesterday and hit Richardson’s Dairy.
The boys got gift cards in their Easter baskets and, since it was a whopping 50ish degrees after school, they naturally wanted to go get the first official ice cream of the season. With the Red Sox game on the radio (they won 8-0, by the way) and the windows down for a stretch of the ride…off we went….because, really, how do you say “no” to that?
A couple of years ago we were fortunate enough to see a calf being born this time of year. It was pretty awesome for the boys to see. Yesterday’s wildlife adventure on the farm was led by a hawk…who apparently thought that Easter was not over because he was clearly still out on an egg hunt.
Check your calendar, Hawk. Easter is over….and, you can sit there looking all threatening all afternoon, but those birds aren’t going to give up their eggs.

Hawk ID Please
Hi, Snapped this attached picture on Sadler Street. What kind of hawk is this? I think it’s a Cooper’s Hawk. It swooped down on my cat. It is eating a blue jay in this picture from our feeder (see talons). It’s about 20” tall. Thanks! Kim Frashure
