A huge heartfelt thanks to All the Gloucester Families Helping with the San Giuseppe Film Project. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

A special thank you to Sefatia for organizing the trolley, and for being the best most spectacular hostess for the St. Joseph trolley. Traveling from home to home, she knows by heart, and explains in great detail, each of the family’s alar traditions and stories. She also manages to keep the trolley gang together (all 50 or so). Thanks to Sefatia, no one was left behind!

Thanks to Mayor Kirk for sharing in the St. Joseph trolley and festivities. Gloucester is so blessed to have the BEST Mayor ever!

Thanks to CATA and Ed Sallah for donating the trolley. Ed is an amazing driver and was so considerate towards each and every member of our exuberant party.

Gloucester Maritime Summit 2013

The City of Gloucester today released a video highlighting the City’s ongoing efforts to expand and diversify the maritime economy.  The video provides an overview of the recent Maritime Summit.

Like many working waterfronts, Gloucester faces challenges, especially with its historic fishing industry. Recently 150 stakeholders gathered to exchange ideas and advance a vision for Gloucester’s maritime economy that celebrates traditional fishing while embracing innovative opportunities in technology, life science research, and robotics. The Summit provided a showcase for innovation on the waterfront. More than 20 experts made presentations about the role of research, technology, and science in the future maritime economy.

By combining historic waterfront resources, the spirit of innovation, and an unparalleled natural setting, the city of Gloucester is ready to set sail into a brighter tomorrow.

Joey,
Here’s a short story about two of the first Gloucester gillnetters that I hope you can use on GMG.
My grandfather, Capt. John A. Dahlmer  bought the 39ft. “Rough Rider” shortly after she was launched at Manitowoc, Wisconsin in 1904.  She was one of the first gas-powered fishing boats on the Great Lakes.  The first picture was taken the day of her launch.  Grandfather brought her to Gloucester in 1910 and alternating in the command of Capt. Edw. Weiderman and Capt. Pete Tysver and Capt. Lawrence B. Dahlmer.  The second picture shows her at the Tysver wharf off E. Main St.
In 1909 Capt. John Dahlmer had the 63ft. “Margaret D.” built at the J.G. Laird & Son Shipyard in Ashtabula, Ohio.  She was named for and christened by my mother, Margaret V. Dahlmer who was 5 years old in 1909.  Later that year, or early in 1910 he brought her to Gloucester where she worked as a gillnetter and mackerel seiner.  The first picture shows her launch in 1909 and the second is of her, rigged for seining in Smith Cove.  She was wrecked on Milk Island off Rockport in 1915.
The captains Dahlmer, Weiderman and Tysver were among a group  of 10 skippers who brought their families and boats from Charlevoix, Michigan to Gloucester in 1909-1910 and established the first successful gillnet fishery in America’s oldest fishing port.  All four families settled on Rocky Neck and eventually moved to other Gloucester locations. Other families from Michigan who brought their boats and settled in E. Gloucester included the Arnold, Shoares, Lasley,Lafond and Place families.
The Michigan men earned handle, “Michigan Bears” by working together to do whatever chore needed to be done for their boats, no mater how hard or how heavy the work.  The Michigan men and their son’s went on to captain many other boats out of Gloucester over the years.

Varian Semiconductor / Applied Materials and the Gloucester/ Silicon Valley connection

Catherine Ryan submits-

Hi Joey

There’s a long and continuous through-line of innovative and inventive companies and entrepreneurial spirit throughout Gloucester ’s history.

Here’s some background from James Kawski, Market Analyst and CI Manager for Applied Materials Varian Semiconductor, on the Gloucester/Silicon Valley, full-circle high tech connection.

  • Late 1940’s, brothers Russell Harrison and Sigurd Fergus Varian formed Varian Associates in California creating one of the early stalwarts of Silicon Valley. In 1953 they moved their headquarters to Palo Alto .
  • In 1975 Varian Associates purchased Extrion Corporation of Gloucester and Varian Semiconductor Equipment Associates was born.
  • 1999 VSEA was spun off in 1999 and established itself as the world leader in the manufacture of Ion Implanters: large, technically complex machines used to make microchips.
  • 2011 Varian entered a new market making tools to build better, more efficient solar cells. In keeping with sustainable business practices Varian built the first power generating wind turbine on Cape Anne (which now forms a trio on our horizon with the two from Gloucester Engineering)
  • Late 2011 Varian merged with Santa Clara California ’s Applied Materials, reconnecting Gloucester ’s high technology history with Silicon Valley .
  • June 2012 Varian’s CEO Gary Dickerson named President of Applied
  • February 2013 Bob Halliday named CFO of Applied Materials

Key to Gloucester City Hall’s City Council in Session 1937 New Deal mural by Charles Allan Winter

Catherine Ryan submits-

The Committee for the Arts is excited to share new “in situ” photographs of Gloucester ’s City Hall murals by noted architectural photographer, Chuck Choi.

Here is Chuck Choi photographing and Mayor Carolyn Kirk eyeing his composition

Here’s one featuring Charles Allan Winter’s City Council in Session in the lobby of City Hall (don’t miss our killer ship chandeliers!);

followed by a photo zoomed in to show all 34 figures

followed by a photo of the framed “key” that his installed below the mural, just above the collectors’ windows—more to follow on the key!

There was media coverage in the 1930s for the murals as they were completed, and many times since then. Here’s a fun one: In 1972 Senator William L. Saltonstall (Manchester resident and member of the Massachusetts Senate from 1967-1979) enlisted the help of media to announce a contest to help identify the portraits in some of Charles Allan Winter’s New Deal murals within Gloucester ’s City Hall. The Cape Ann VF insert published a photograph of the Winter mural in Kyrouz Auditorium, The Founding of Gloucester, with the caption: “Senator Saltonstall is offering dinner for two at a Gloucester restaurant to the first person to identify the most real people in the mural painting above.”
