LEADEN DECEMBER SKIES :)

How fortunate we are to be experiencing a delightfully warm El Nino December although many regions in the rest of the country are not faring as well as we in the Northeast. Thinking about where we were almost to the date a year ago at this time…see the end of this post.

Rainbow Hood

Love my neighborhood!

Today, late day, as happens so many afternoons, I looked up from my work and saw the sky beginning to catch fire–an irresistible reason to take a break and run down to the bottom of our hill to take a few snapshots. I am thankful!

Niles Beach Sunset

Niles Beach Boston skyline Gloucester sunset ©Kim Smith 2014Last evening’s late summer sunset began quietly, in soft shades of coral rose and lavender blue. The sky’s light swiftly transformed to a riotous rainbow of super saturated hues.

Celtic Music on the Thomas E. Lannon – Great Music, Sail, People and Sunset

Captain Tom Ellis took the Thomas E. Lannon out on a glorious sail beyond the breakwater, Celtic singer Michael O’Leary and Friends played music to the delight of everyone on board, many happy faces enjoying the sunset and a welcoming flock of sea gulls as they escorted the Schooner Lannon back home.

Chasing Rainbows (and Storm Clouds)

The beautiful double rainbow that Bill and Paul captured late Saturday afternoon had faded, but I did see this on my way home.

The sky was so gorgeous I next stopped at Smith’s Cove to catch the end of the setting sun. The hues quickly changed from vivid yellow-orange to orange-violet-pink.

Sunset Swim

We’re having a heat wave,

A tropical heat wave,

The temperature’s rising,

It isn’t surprising,

She certainly can-can.

View Across the Harbor from Niles Beach

First day of summer and first swim of the season!  Last night we packed a picnic and went for a swim–the perfect antidote to a heat wave. Tonight, more of the same. We’re so fortunate to live in Gloucester, moments away from any number of beautiful beaches!

Shooting into the sun can bring out details you’d never see otherwise. This shot was taken last week. I never get tired of Gloucester sunsets.  —Sharon
