Everyday should be Earth day. Please see the following information from Patti Amaral.
Hello Donna, here is a couple of pictures one for sidewalk sweeping and one for earth day. The one sweeping is for sidewalk sweeping and the dog with the recycling is for earth day. I figured you could put a caption “ Even a dog can help cleanup for Earth Day” and recycle too. Sidewalk sweeping is April 19th. The Building Center of Gloucester sponsors our Sidewalk Sweeping Day with a ad in the Gloucester Times asking residents to join in and sweep our sidewalks. We ask residents to sweep their sidewalks keeping it in small piles so that the street sweeping machine can pick it up.
Earth Day is April 26th. from 9-12 at Stage Fort Park. Wolf Hill has generously donated a pansy for children to take home. We are also again asking for donations for the Open Door asking if volunteers can bring fresh fruits and veggies for the pantry. I have contacted Joey and we are suppose to get together to do something for earth day but I thought a little information ahead of time will hopefully let people know to save the date and such. Thank you for your help and if you need anything else from me just let me know. Patti Peace

Earth Day Cleanup Saturday April 27, 2013 from 9-12.
Come join the Clean City Initiative for an Earth Day cleanup at Stage Fort Park on Saturday April 27, 2013 from 9-12. We will be collecting fresh fruits and vegetables for the Food Pantry so if you can, please bring something that comes from the earth. You can come and clean Stage Fort Park or take your bag and bring it to an area that you like to visit that needs some cleaning. Take an extra bag and separate the recycling from the trash. Organize a neighborhood cleanup, we can show you how. Contact Rose Lopiccolo at the DPW at 978-281-9785 or Patti Amaral at 978-412-4201 or visit our webpage at www.cleancity.us,. Thank you for helping us to “Keep Our Home Port Clean”.
Good lighting is of prime importance to an art gallery, and here at Bodin Historic Photo lighting burns huge amounts of electricity. I have 36 track and ceiling lights in the showroom and windows, and each used a 75 watt halogen spotlight. Do the math, and that’s 2700 watts burning 7 days per week, 8 to 10 hours a day. About ten years ago I experimented with CFL fluorescent lights, which use less energy and last longer than the halogens, but produce an ugly green or blueish light. CFLs made my artwork look awful, so I stopped buying them.
Five years ago I jumped on the LED bandwagon, which promised large energy savings and a 10 to 20 year bulb life. But the light’s color still wasn’t right: either too pink or too cold white (like a hospital OR). Last year I found the perfect LED: the GE PAR 30 2700K warm floodlight. I use the long neck version because of the size of my fixtures. I discovered this light at ACE Hardware for about $50. They also have a larger version (PAR38) for recessed ceiling lights: GE Dimmable 12W LED Bulb (66529) – LED Light Bulbs – Ace Hardware. As my halogens and CFLs burned out, I replaced them with my new favorite LEDs.
Last year I found the same LED product at The EFI Mass Save Catalog Product Offer | GE LED PAR30 for $35 each. So I ordered 6 of them and now have 10W LEDs in 21 of my 36 gallery lights. My electric bill is already drastically lower, dropping from $100–$120 per month down to $50–$60 per month, saving $600–$720 per year. The savings will be 85% when all of my fixtures are re-lamped with LEDs. (360 watts with 10W LED vs 2700 watts with 75W halogen). Below are some comparisons.
Halogens: GE 75W halogen warm spotlight: $15–$20. 1,500 hour life (vulnerable to vibration**). Dimmable. $9.03 operating cost per year.
LEDs: GE 10W LED warm floodlight. $35–$50. 25,000 hour life (not vulnerable to vibration**). Dimmable (check dimmer compatibility). $1.20 operating cost per year.
*CFLs: Not a contender because of the yuk color. **Vibration is a major cause of failure for filament bulbs, such as halogens, and is caused by shipping, handling, or a rockin’ party.
My advice: Come into my gallery and see the LEDs first hand. Buy one or two LEDs with the warm 2700K color balance to fit your light fixtures. Compare the color with what you’re using now. Then start re-lamping and saving money!
Here’s my favorite LED, lit by the same LED in my gallery track light.

Here are some pictures of West Parish students planting salad greens as part of the first annual, district-wide salad planting day. What a great way to celebrate Earth Day!
Featured here are Ms. LaCoste’s and Ms. McKechnie’s classrooms. All five elementary schools participated–more pictures to come!
This is Gloucester Ave. across the street from the bowling alley up to Maplewood. I’ve been yellow bagging it today and can’t put a dent in how bad it is. I could stand still, not move my feet and with my grabber, fill a yellow bag to the brim, move two feet and do it again.
I went back out tonight to another street one block over. Again, unbelievable, adjacent to a building on Grove Street . I’m plowing away and a little 8 year old named Jake comes out with his grabber. He wants to help me. My yellow bag is full and I was just about to go home but I couldn’t resist. He ran in his house and got his own bag to share with me. He asked me why people put trash on the ground and I had no good answer for him. We chatted away about school and homework and reading books. I told him thanks little pal and he asked if we could meet tomorrow. I was so overwhelmed. We parted but I got back into it a little further up the block and got over this broken fence. Jake must have seen me and I see him coming back up the street with a huge wheel barrel. We found so much more stuff, even a new hockey stick he asked if he could have. What a great boy. His parents should be proud. I will write him a thank you note and get him a Friendly’s gift card, not because I think he should be rewarded but just because he is an awesome kid. Nice end to a dirty day!

To celebrate Earth Day (Earth Week-Earth Month-Everyday is Earth Day!), I am beginning a new series on GMG titled Habitat Gardening 101. The series is based on the lectures that I give to area conservation groups, garden clubs, libraries, and schools and is designed to provide information on the relationships between our native flora and fauna, and how to translate that information to your own garden. You will find in this series information on how to support and encourage to your garden a wide variety of wildlife, including songbirds, butterflies, bees, moths, skippers, hummingbirds, and small mammals, and the trees, wildflowers, shrubs, vines, and groundcovers that sustain these beautiful creatures.
This series could just as well be titled Beauty in Our Midst because there are so many gems to be found along our shoreline, meadows, fields, wetlands, dunes, woodlands, and roadsides. Although the series will cover a wide array of flora and wildlife, the first posts will be about several butterfly attracting trees and shrubs because they are currently in bloom. Coming Wednesday, the North American native Pussy Willow will be featured. For today, the following is one of my Top Ten Tips for Attracting Lepidoptera to Your Garden.
*
Habitat Gardening 101 Tip #1: Plant Caterpillar Food Plants
So you want to attract tons of butterflies to your garden and you plant lots of gorgeous, colorful nectar-rich plants—and that is wonderful. To your garden will come many beautiful, albeit transient, butterflies, along with an array of many different species of beneficial pollinators. However, if you want butterflies to colonize your garden, in other words, to experience the grand beauty of the creature through all its stages of life, from egg to caterpillar to chrysalis to adult, you must also plant caterpillar food plants.
Black Swallowtail Butterfly Egg on Fennel (the pinhead-sized golden yellow dot)
Each species of butterfly caterpillar will only eat from a family of plants it has coevolved a relationship with over millennia. We call this a caterpillar food plant, host plant, or larval food plant.
Perhaps you may recall that the Monarch Butterfly only deposits her eggs on milkweed plants. The Black Swallowtail Butterfly deposits her eggs on, and the caterpillars feast on, members of Umbelliferae (Apiaceae), or carrot family of plants, including carrots, parsley, fennel, dill, and Queen Anne’s Lace. Some caterpillars, like the stunning Eastern Tiger Swallowtail feed from several plant families, like those of Magnoliaceae and Rosaceae, which species include the Wild Black Cherry, the Tulip Tree, and the Sweet Bay Magnolia.
If you see a green, black and yellow striped and spotted caterpillar munching on your parsley plant, it is not a Monarch caterpillar; it is a Black Swallowtail caterpillar (I am often asked this question). Monarch caterpillars are striped yellow, black, and white, always. You will never find a Black Swallowtail caterpillar munching on milkweed; likewise you will never find a Monarch caterpillar eating your parsley and fennel.
Another question frequently asked is, if I invite caterpillars to my garden, will they devour all the foliage. The answer is, for the most part, no. The damage done is relatively minimal, the plant generally recovers quickly, and bear in mind too, that plants have evolved with many mechanisms to discourage their complete destruction. Remember, the plant was responsible for inviting the butterfly to its flower in the first place!
Note too, that if you invite butterflies to your garden to deposit their eggs, please don’t turn around and spray pesticides, which will kill all, indiscriminately. A habitat garden, by its very definition, is an organic garden, which means no herbicides, insecticides, pesticides, and chemical fertilizers.

Cape Ann Milkweed Project Update: Because of the chilly spring weather, milkweed shoots are slow to emerge.
Click map for interactive information and send in your Earth Day Clean Up Pictures And I’ll attach them to the map and the blog!
Roger Davis reports:
On Sunday, the Cape Ann Trails Stewards organized a cleanup along the trails around and above the Goose Cove Reservoir. A number of people worked at cleaning up the service road around the reservoir (including at least a couple of dads with young sons). Patti Amaral reported collecting several bags of trash around the parking area at the entrance to Dogtown. These photos show the cleanup at an apparent party spot near the city’s compost area in Dogtown. A group of a dozen volunteers collected a dozen bags full of empty cans, bottles and litter. This area borders a sensitive vernal wetland, so it was good to see it cleaned up. It was good to see so many people stepping up to return our woodlands to its beautiful natural state. Kudos to volunteers. Kudos for Cape Ann Trails Stewards. Keep your eyes open for future activities of this newly organized volunteer group.
The scene upon arrival. The fire ring was still smoldering. Clean up begins. Trash in the wetlands. Cape Ann Trail Stewards and friends. Count the bags and buckets!

Earth Day is being celebrated between April 20th and April 27th 2013 here in Gloucester. Because in the past I’ve never seen a comprehensive list ahead of time and neighborhoods who would like to have a plan to meet, I think Good Morning Gloucester is the perfect place to be the clearinghouse for Local Earth Day Information.
If your organization or neighborhood is planning something, submit it to goodmorninggloucester@yahoo.com I will add it to the GMG Earth Day Google Map and add your listing here on the blog.
Click map for interactive information and send in your Earth Day Clean Up Pictures And I’ll attach them to the map and the blog!
Would be great to have neighborhoods write in and say where and what time they would like to meet. FOB Patty Amaral will also update us with where to get yellow bags which will be collected and anything else from the Clean City Initiative coordination efforts. We are continually updating this list so continue to send in your neighborhood plan and I’ll post it. (seems most neighborhoods are meeting at 9AM) I don’t see a Magnolia, or East Gloucester initiative yet. Send your listing to goodmorninggloucester@yahoo.com

What is the Eco-Trip?
It’s a scavenger hunt from 12:30 – 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 20 around downtown Gloucester. You’ll walk to eight businesses and solve a puzzle that will reveal one way they are taking care of the environment.
You’ll have fun while exercising your brain and body! You’ll learn what Gloucester businesses are doing to lessen their carbon footprints. You’ll have a chance to win a gift from a local business and enjoy light refreshments at the after party at Latitude 43.
How will I know where to go?
You’ll sign in at the Friend Room of the Sawyer Free Library and get a map showing the businesses’ locations. You’ll plan your own route from there. We’ll meet for the after party at Latitude 43 between 2:30 and 3 p.m.
Do I have to travel alone?
You can choose to play solo or in a team of 2 to 4 people. If you register by yourself and want to play as part of a team, we will assign you to a team when you sign in on April 20.
Will kids enjoy the Eco-Trip?
The Eco-Trip (1 ½ mile walk) and puzzles have been designed for adults and for middle and high school students. It’s up to you to gauge your child’s interest and stamina. Children age 13+ should pay the $10 registration fee.
How does my team win?
The Eco-Trip is not a race. The goal is to solve the puzzles. Teams that solve all eight puzzles will be entered in a drawing during the party at Latitude 43 for first pick of the prizes. Teams that solve three or more puzzles will be entered into a drawing to select from among the remaining prizes.
I want to play! How do I register? How much does it cost? Click on the Eco-Trip link at the Eco-Trip Registration page, fill out the short form and pay by credit card via PayPal. Each Eco-Trip player will pay a $10 fee before April 13. After that, players will pay $15. The Eco-Trip is a fundraiser for the Cape Ann TimeBank.
What is the Cape Ann TimeBank?
The Cape Ann TimeBank is a group of individuals and businesses that strengthen the community by offering their services to each other and to community groups. For every hour of service a member offers, s/he is eligible to ask for an hour of help in return.
Where can I park?
Gloucester has 10-hour parking meters (.50/hour) and a parking lot on Rogers Street below the Fitz Henry Lane house and across from the police station.
Is there a rain date?
No, we’re going to hold the Eco-Trip rain or shine. After all, rain is an integral part of our ecology!
For more information about the Eco-Trip, contact Nancy Goodman at ngoodman52@yahoo.com.

Hi Joey!
Glad to hear it was a success down on the dock! I don’t have as many photos of different locations as I would like to have had. I checked in at Stage Fort Park – and there was a group hard at work spreading mulch, not sure but i think it was the Rotary Club – I’ll double check that for you. Then I got a call from Laurel Tarantino asking if anyone was looking for a spot to clean – she was at the lower end of Essex Avenue – the marsh stretch to Dunkin Donuts… so I decided to head down there to give her a had for a bit before I bounced around to check in with everyone, I ended up staying there all morning and never went anywhere else! While we were cleaning – A Hiltz truck stopped and took about 8 bags for us – we ended up picking up about 20 bags just from that little stretch!!!!
Thank you so much for all your help and I really love my cool GMG metalic sticker!!!!

For anyone who wants to help clean up down along our docks on east Main street for earth day, I’ll be buying coffee and donuts. I suggested to Melissa Cox that I’d buy beer and pizza but she told me it might be a little early for that and suggested coffee and donuts.
We will have some water as well and if anyone is still around come noon Saturday April 21, I’ll re-up on the pledge for pizza and beer as well.
Melissa is picking up bags and disposable gloves. We’re gonna get started at 8AM
95 East Main Street, Captain Joe and Sons
and anyone who shows up will get one of the highly coveted only a handful ever made metallic blue stickas!
Stickas made by FOB’s Frank Ciolino and Shewsberry
Paulie Walnuts donated two embroidered T Shirts and one embroidered GMG Logo Cap to be raffled off for a free drawing chosen from the group of FOB’s who come down and hang with us. I can guarantee you that our group will be having the most Earth day Fun on Saturday!
There may even be an art rock planted somewhere in our general vicinity that morning!

On April 22nd Toad Hall Bookstore on Main Street in Rockport, as part of its 40th anniversary celebration, is sponsoring an Earth Day Beach Cleanup and Beach-Art Presentation. All are invited to walk to Front Beach with naturalist Robert Buchsbaum and to talk with local artist Nina Samoiloff as she creates a sculpture made from collected beach materials. Activities begin at noon at Toad Hall which donates all of its net profits to support environmental improvement and education projects.

Do you know of an area in Gloucester that, if you had the time and the help, you would like to clean up? Well, here is your opportunity! The City, in conjunction with the Clean City Initiative, is asking folks to turn out for a citywide clean up on Saturday, April 21st (rain date Sunday, April 22nd).
The Clean City Initiative will be focusing its efforts on Stage Fort Park from 9 to noon, but the clean up is citywide and participants are encouraged to choose a public area in Gloucester they would like to see cleaned up. We are also asking different groups to reach out to their members and pick a problem area to clean that day. Listed below are some hot spots if folks need ideas.
Green Street Playground Cherry Street Pavilion Beach Maplewood Avenue Magnolia Avenue Centennial Ave to High School Poles Hill Fitz Henry Lane Thatcher Road Railroad Avenue Fort Square Gloucester Avenue
Details If you are organizing a group and an area to clean, contact Rose LoPiccolo at Gloucester DPW before the event to let her know where you will be working and estimated number of yellow trash bags and clear recycling bags you will need. Rose can be reached at 978 281 9785. Rose will be maintaining a list of all the clean up spots to insure we are maximizing our efforts! Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own tools and re-useable gloves, although gloves will be available.
