Late afternoon on Saturday
Late Saturday afternoon the clouds over the beach were beautiful. It got a little foggy with winds. Great afternoon. Also, the ducks and ducklings swimming are adorable.

Duckling learning how to swim
How cute are these ducklings and their mothers learning to swim and fish.

sweet ducklings navigate the current at the Cut alongside Gloucester DPW lovely storm repairs
It has been a long time since I’ve brought a tiny boat through the Cut from the Annisquam side (alert and praying I wouldn’t slam into the walls or another boat as the waters rush and pull). How were ducks faring? They were amusing and difficult to count for a few stolen moments on this glorious summer day. They’d dive to eat what I’m not sure, and pop up, sometimes a bit too far back. Once they were under so long I found myself crossing to the other side of the bridge to see if they were dragged back or catching a ride. Not a chance.
I found the completed winter storm repairs at the Cut equally beautiful and distracting.
Nice job Gloucester Department of Public Works (DPW)!

DUCKLINGS APLENTY AT NILES POND!
Last week, Mom Mallard had to cut a path through the lily pads.

This morning, the duckling led the way!
There are half a dozen duckling families at Niles Pond, all at seemingly different ages of development, from the smallest, an “only” duckling, to “tweens,” and “teens.” I am happy to see many have made it past snapping-turtle-breakfast-age!
Special Time with FOB Ann Kennedy
I got to spend a very special morning with Ann Kennedy on Tuesday, toward the end of her and Bob’s month-long annual visit to their beloved Gloucester. We met early for a delicious and hearty breakfast at Sailor Stan’s, then went for a nice long walk out Eastern Point, to the spot I now call Evelyn’s Point, beyond the Retreat House and Brace Cove. We encountered many beautiful and fun things along our journey, including a mother duck with her ducklings (she had to be babysitting, as they couldn’t all have been her’s) and two turtles sunning on a rock in Niles Pond, plus a dreadful and vicious bullfrog that Ann attempted unsuccessfully to capture and bring to Joey. This has become one of my favorite spots to walk to and it was nice to be able to share it with Ann, who had never been there. The trails through the woods are soft and peaceful. At one point we were forced to stop and turn back because of a large uprooted tree that made the path we were on unpassable. It was a special time with a special FOB and friend, and I look forward to a repeat when they return next year.
Congratulations to Ann and Bob who just celebrated their 42nd wedding anniversary.

Niles Pond Ducklings
Late afternoon Monday while photographing around Niles Pond, I heard a soft rustling in the reeds nearby. I had been standing very still and was hoping it was the illusive muskrat who seems to be everywhere on the Pond, and nowhere when you have camera at the ready. Not Mr. Muskrat, but instead, Mama Mallard and her ducklings emerged.
