My View of Life on the Dock
…come sailing in, on my Christmas tree!
Remember, it’s still Christmas until January 6th (you know, the 12 Days of Christmas…). I didn’t get three French hens, but at the suggestion of several people after my earlier post, I added a third ship to my tree. (On the left is an origami snowflake folded from a hexagon.)
Another decoration for my origami Christmas tree!
Some nautical decorations are necessary on a Christmas tree in a city like Gloucester, so I made these for my tree (which only has origami decorations).
Models designed by Martin Wall (rear ship) and Patricia Crawford (front ship), and folded by me, each from one uncut sheet of 5″ square tissue foil.
Any other Cape Ann origami folders out there? Comment on this post if you’d like to get together to fold from time to time! Maybe we could start a Cape Ann origami group. I’m willing to teach.
Shot these with the Mrs’ Nikon D40 and the cheap awesome 35mm nikon 1.8 prime lens I got her for her birthday. You can find it here. The beauty of a 35mm prime lens this fast is that you can isolate your subjects and throw the background out of focus. They also perform super well in low light. With the kit lens that shipped with her D40 I would have had to use the flash and the photos would have had all that blown out whitewashed look to them-UGLY. Not using the flash with the kit lens would have produced blurry out of focus photos as well. Love manually focusing with these, makes photography fun! Every enthusiast photographer that has a dslr or interchangeable lens camera should own a fast 35mm prime. (Paul Morrison this means you)
My darling daughter, away at graduate school, is missing home and missing especially Christmas-making. She called last night to request a snapshot of our Christmas tree. My wish for Christmas was that both Liv and Alex could come home for Christmas. Alex we knew for sure would be home (if for no other reason than he misses home cooked dinners) but Liv started a brand new job with a crazy schedule and is mired in papers and finals. I learned yesterday that she will be traveling home on the 21st and son will be home Thursday of this week. Happiest of moms am I!

Hi Joey,
I had a chance to capture the event of "Christmas" coming to Rockport with the addition of a beautiful 33 foot Christmas tree in Dock Square that was donated by the Nagle family on White Way. The Rockport DPW and Ace Hardware teamed up to carefully cut the 50 + year old tree down and load it onto a flat bed truck for its short journey to Dock Square for all to enjoy during this holiday season.

Here’s just a couple of samples-
Sister cities Gloucester, Ma and Shelburne, Nova Scotia have a great tradition of Shelburne giving Gloucester a Christmas tree each year and Gloucester’s legislative delegation giving books to the Shelburne library in return.
A delegation from Gloucester is now on the way to get the tree, with Ringo Tarr at the wheel of the truck and trailer that will carry it on the long journey to its place of honor at Kent Circle.
I am part of the crew, and we have video equipment so we will post clips of the trip here over the next few days. The first clip is posted below.

The trees show off some highly inventive finery: tiny lights wrapped in white silk roses from Sage Floral Studio; beautiful signature glass lighthouses from concert sponsor Cape Ann Savings Bank; a bounty of holiday goodies, including gift-card filled stockings, from Stop and Shop; a vision of the best fresh eating with a tree of fruits and veggies from Willow Rest/Utopia Farm (including a $50 gift certificate); and a promise of more superb eating from Duckworth’s Beach Gourmet with a certificate for a five course dinner for six from the store, valued at $700! And there are MANY more, twenty total!!
