Did you know that you can get your Gloucester tourism related business listed in the www.GloucesterMA.com website for free?

Well you do know sucka!  Thank your boy Joey.  We went to the meeting for you and listened to the Mayor and the E-Board talk about what is happening to make this tourist season one of the best yet and I know with people’s busy schedules that it’s tough for business owners to get to all the meetings, but that’s where we come in.  We went and taped the speeches from Mayor Kirk, Jan Bordinaro and Sheree Delorenzo (before we ran out of memory space on the camera.

We learned of a bunch of things on the GloucesterMA.com website that can help you and tourists know what you need to know.

2011 Earth Day Trash Clean Up and Concert!

Your Questions Answered!

The Clean Up?
Saturday, April 23rd:  Participants are asked to come to the Stage Fort Park Visitor’s Center between 9 and 12 to pick up gloves and empty trash and recycling bags for their clean up.  Friday delivery of bags can be arranged by contacting Sharon.  See contact info below.

Collected Trash and Recycling?

Participants will be given yellow bags to put collected trash into and clear bags for recyclables.  We are asking participants to bring their collected trash and recycling back to Stage Fort Park.  The City of Gloucester, who is providing the trash bags, will also be picking up collected trash and recyclables.

Where is the Clean Up?

The clean up is citywide and participants are encouraged to clean up a public area in Gloucester of their choosing – it could be their school grounds, favorite playing field, park or beach.  (We will also have a list of suggested sites on hand, if folks need ideas).
What if we have a lot of trash or find a very heavy / cumbersome item (e.g. appliance)?
We do not expect you to transport really heavy / cumbersome items. If possible, it is requested that it be left in a location that can be easily accessed by a City truck or left where found if too heavy to move.  . In either case, it will be important to let us know the location so we can let the Department of Public Works know.
What should I wear?
Participant are encouraged to dress appropriately for the weather and for the activity (picking up trash!)
My child would like to participate but I can’t make it?
Any young children unaccompanied by a guardian will work with Clean City Initiative and pick up trash at Stage Fort Park from 9 to noon.
Do we need to pick up trash from 9 to noon?
We are asking participants to do what they can on that day.  There is no obligation to work the full 3 hours or those 3 hours.
The Concert?
The concert will take place at Cape Ann Brewery (11 Rogers Street) starting at 6 pm.

YMCA TEEN LEADERS CLUB 2011 ROCKATHON TO FEED CAPE ANN ’S HUNGRY

image

Back in January, thirty-three members of the YMCA Teen Leaders Club embarked on their annual "Rockathon to Feed Cape Ann’s Hungry" – with each member rocking in a rocking chair for 24-sleepless hours from 8am Saturday through 8am Sunday.  Each Y Teen Leader committed to solicit and collect a minimum of 230 cans.  Youth spent weeks soliciting and then collecting donations of non-perishable food items.  In order to accommodate prospective donors who might have difficulty carting caseloads of cans, the club established a "two-for-a-dollar" rate for financial donations for Open Door.

Through the efforts of this fantastic group of local youth, 7749 cans and other non-perishable food items were earned and distributed to the Open Door, St. Vincent DePaul Society and directly to local families in need.

On March 10th, the YMCA Teen Leaders Club welcomed special guest Julie LaFontaine, Executive Director of the Open Door to attend their weekly meeting.  After Julie thanked the teens for their consistently strong efforts year after year, club members proudly presented a $2075 donation – the fiscal culmination of the groups’ collections.  The YMCA Teen Leaders Club would like to officially recognize our top three solicitors:  Alex Jones-770, Steven Verga-554 and Shannon Gallagher-536.  We would also like to extend thanks to our families, friends, neighbors and the community for such a tremendous outpouring of support for others in need. Also, special thanks for donations to Dominos Pizza and Carroll K. Steele Insurance for our meals.

Other participants include: Noah Ashe, Paul Bondarev, Heather Boudrow, Cheyanne Fanala, Colby Ferris , Victoria Flannagan, Alex Henry, Katt Kariores, Sofia Lane , Ardrianna Lombardo, Rosie, Luce, Jared Marshall, Christian O’Donnell, Lindsay Parrish, Matt Pastagal, Kevin Redmond, Nathan Rubin, Jeff. St. Peter, Brandon Stewart, Breanna Silva, Antonio Saputo, Andreaz Saputo, Tiffany Sonia, Danielle Thibodeau, Keith Todd, Molly White, Zach White, Andrew Widtfeldt, Nikki Williamson & Robyn Wonson.

2011 Fish and Fisheries Public Seminar Series

Emily Chandler Writes-

Hello Joey,
I am the program manager for the Large Pelagics Research Center.  We are a scientific research group that recently moved from the University of New Hampshire to Gloucester and the University of Massachusetts Amherst. We conduct biological and ecological research on pelagic species including tunas, sharks, billfish, and sea turtles and our director, Dr. Molly Lutcavage, has been working with the local Gloucester fishing fleet on bluefin tuna research since 1993. We are now located in Gloucester, MA and, as part of the Marine Fisheries Institute, are working to revitalize the UMass Marine Station at Hodgkins Cove.
We are co-hosting a public seminar series with the Gloucester Maritime Heritage Center on Thursday evenings from March 31st through May 5th.  Talks will be on a variety of fish topics ranging from bluefin tuna to great white sharks.
