We returned to the Howard Blackburn restaurant on Main Street, recently opened in the former Halibut Point location. Amber was our server and Noah was behind the bar working his magic. We were warmly greeted so it was an immediate feeling of homecoming. I ordered the burger and Jim had the Italian Fish Chowder (which he has been waiting for!) and the Twinlight Smokehouse haddie. We were NOT disappointed! My Royal Gift was indeed a lovely gift to accompany our meal. We are very glad to see a restaurant at this location and plan to return often.

Celebrate the warm weather this weekend by gathering up your family and friends to attend the first annual WellFest, A Greater Cape Ann Community Wellness Fair. You can expect a diverse range of vendors in the health and wellness sector along with live entertainment courtesy of DJ Mark, and a special menu at Bliss Bites Cafe. The event will take place outside, at the Glen T. MacLeod Cape Ann YMCA’s outdoor turf area. Soak up the sunshine and head to WellFest this Sunday, May 15 from 11am – 2pm!

Chorus line…

While it may change slightly day to day, this pretty much sums up how we travel. Two kids, two school, in two different towns, three sports, four teams (currently…sometimes more), and two favorite hobbies that they try to squeeze in any second they get. We always travel with a cooler full of water and gatorade….and snacks. Today the dirt bike is parked elsewhere, but Thatch has an away baseball game. Finn, unbelievably, has no practices, but has packed fishing gear with aspirations of catching some stripers in the afternoon. The morning hustle to determine what is needed for the next 15 hours is no joke. Not to mention school bags, laptops….. my two jobs…. Cheers to FriYAY and an only mildly busy weekend.

Speck
You’ll get a big flavor from even the thinnest slice of this dense, ruddy ham. It gets boned out before being rubbed down with a cure laced with spices like juniper and bay leaves. Then it is smoked and aged. That spiced cure gives speck a deeper taste that’s more intense than prosciutto di Parma. For the record, it’s pretty awesome with some roasted sweet potatoes too.

Pat D’s Photos will be at the outdoor Elks Spring Craft Fair Sat May 21 along with several other favorite local artisans. Plan to stop by the Elks parking lot along the back shore to see these products (and many others) from Pat D’s Photos. I feature notecards and prints (printed at Cape Ann Giclee); along with glass prints, magnets, puzzles, placemats and coasters using local images. Please make plans to stop by that day and introduce yourself! Donna Ardizzoni, Cape Ann Sea Salt and Hold Fast Company are some of the others you will see all in one stop!

Michael Shaps Chardonnay, Wild Meadow Vineyard, Virginia, US, 2017, Alc. 13.5% Varietals: Virginia Chardonnay Tasting: Using the same techniques and approach to this chardonnay as Shaps does at his winery in Meursault, Fr., this chardonnay expresses the elegance and complexity that is often associated with his Burgundian wines. The 2017 Chardonnay is a combination of distinctive fruit quality from this special site, and prolonged malolactic fermentation with heavy lees contact. The result has yielded a complete wine that will age well for 5-7 years. Pairs Well: Halibut en Route, well-timed for pan fried soft shell crab, shellfish, Atlantic salmon roe….$27.99
Adega Ponte de Lima Vinho Verde Rose, DOC, Protugal 2021, Alc. 11%

The aroma of wine is woven from halftones of cherry jam and bright touches of ripe raspberries and strawberries, as well as notes of red fruits. The wine has an elegant, balanced taste. It has a pleasant fruity sourness and notes of ripe berries for a persistent aftertaste. Pairs Well: Enjoy with seafood and fish, meat, snacks, pasta, fresh veggies, and desserts… $9.99
Mengler Family Vineyards Rose of Syrah, North Coast, Russian River, CA., 2021, Alc. 12.9%, Varietals: 100% Shiraz/Syrah, Tasting: This Rose in the traditional Rhone style, designed to taste like Syrah but happens to be pink. Vivier Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast, CA., 2017, Alc. 12.2%, Varietals: Pinot Noir, Tasting: The nose is an earthy mix of Asian spice, violet and rose petals mixed with black cherry and mocha. On the palate, the same complexity of flavors returns with layers of delicate red fruit, floral notes and touches of a gentle earthiness and minerality. The texture of the wine is intricate and airy, while still bringing power and density on the finish, Pairs Well: Enjoy with pork, duck, veal or lamb dishes, grilled chicken breast, hard & soft cheese and curled meats. Rating: Wine Enthusiast 90pts….$39.99
Maison Charmelieu, Chenas, Cru Beaujolais, 2019, Alc. 13.0 Varietals: 100% Gamay Tasting: Bolder and bigger than most Beaujolais.
