Welcome to the Long Bar Saloon

As many of you know, Joey and I have a good-natured battle each year over hummingbirds attracted to our respective homes. Each year I win, but that’s beside the point this time. This is our second year using a long red plastic bar with bird-sized holes for feeding filled with nectar to further attract the hummingbirds. It works! It has worked so well that the hummingbirds seem to prefer it to the traditional hanging red glass feeder. As a bonus, it also is convenient for the orioles. The orioles are at a disadvantage in our yard due to a ravenous raccoon stealing the oranges and jelly we put out for them so I guess the Long Bar Saloon makes for their own style of happy hour.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 10, 2022

GLOUCESTER MEETINGHOUSE FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES 7TH SEASON OF
MUSIC ON MEETINGHOUSE GREEN, FREE FRIDAY EVENING CONCERTS AT 6:00 P.M.

Back for the seventh season, Music on Meetinghouse Green features the best in musical entertainment, with everything from Jazz, classic rock ‘n roll and cabaret, to Klezmer, punk, and Middle Eastern fusion! Food vendors offer up delicious audience favorites. Each week a local Cape Ann non-profit organization is featured and supported by freewill donations.

The Gloucester Meetinghouse Foundation has been organizing this series since 2016 which has continued to grow in audience popularity and in support for Cape Ann’s non-profit community. Last year’s season attracted more than 2,500 concertgoers and raised more than $15,000 all of which benefitted local non-profits.

The series of nine free outdoor concerts runs from July 8 to September 9 and performances are held on Meetinghouse Green at the corner of Middle and Church Streets in Gloucester. Concerts begin at 6:00 p.m. and conclude at 8:30 p.m. Some chairs will be provided and audience members are welcome to bring their own lawn chairs or blankets. Picnic with delicious local food from our vendors or bring your own. Performances are handicapped accessible and parking on the Green is limited to persons with disabilities.

The John Baboian Ensemble has opened the season in support of Pathways for Children in years past and will, once again, kick off the 2022 season of Music on Meetinghouse Green. Baboian is a well-known Jazz guitarist and composer and frequently teams up with fellow musicians from the Berklee College of Music. He has shared the stage with music legends both here and abroad.

ABOUT THE GLOUCESTER MEETINGHOUSE FOUNDATION
Founded in 2015, the Gloucester Meetinghouse Foundation is dedicated to preserving the landmark building as a civic hub, entertainment venue, and community center. In addition to its work to preserve the historic 1806 Meetinghouse, GMF is currently raising funds to restore Meetinghouse Green. The GMF has received a $130,000 grant from the Community Preservation Act and a $2,000 grant from the Essex Heritage Partnership Grant Program towards a total project goal of $340,000. Construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2023.

THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS
Thanks to our sponsors, many of whom have contributed since the series’ first year, all of the season’s expenses for musicians and logistics are fully paid making it possible for 100% of audience donations to go directly to our non-profit partners.

Massachusetts will officially join other states, including our neighbors VT, NY, NJ and CT, to allow all immigrants regardless legal status, who prove MA residency to have a driver’s license, effective July 23, 2023.

Massachusetts will officially join other states, including our neighbors VT, NY, NJ and CT, to allow all immigrants regardless legal status, who prove MA residency to have a driver’s license, effective July 23, 2023.

The MA House and Senate voted this week to overrule Governor Baker’s veto of the Work and Family Mobility bill which allows opportunity for MA immigrants learn the rules and law of the road, pass a driver’s test, and be properly licensed, registered and insured — improving safety on the road for all of us as well as boosting our economy.

Under Federal Law, any immigrant without legal status can attain an Individual Tax ID Number (ITIN) to comply with U.S. tax laws and it’s estimated they contribute $185M in MA state and local taxes annually. With an ITIN, they an immigrant can lawfully register a business and attain a loan to buy a home or buy a car — they just couldn’t lawfully drive that car.

This is a big victory for all of us as at end of the day when the only thing that really matters when you are behind the wheel is how well you know the rules and the law of driving and how prepared will be in case of emergency.

The Work and Family Mobility bill previously passed the House in February (119 to 36) and the Senate in March (32 to 8).

Mayor Greg Verga Announces Private Roads Working Group to Address the Maintenance and Repairs of the City’s Private Roads

The Private Roads Working Group will utilize their experience and expertise to formulate a recommended action plan to address the City of Gloucester’s private roads.

Today, Mayor Greg Verga officially announced the creation of the Private Roads Working Group. From day one of this administration, it has been a priority to find strategic and creative ways to address the state of our City’s roads. The Private Road Working Group will work together to explore what can be done under the City’s private ways ordinance and State law to address the unique circumstances surrounding private roads.

“My office receives an overwhelming number of inquiries from constituents regarding the state of our City’s roads,” said Mayor Greg Verga. “Private roads present several challenges, but I feel confident that this group will come together to present a realistic action plan.”

The group consists of City Council members and several Gloucester residents – each member bringing a wide range of knowledge and experience to the group. Suzanne Egan, City of Gloucester General Counsel, will support the group as they explore the legal limitations and policy associated with the private roads system. Over the next several months, the members will examine the existing ordinances and laws to explore ways for the City to improve the process and conditions of Gloucester’s private roads.

The members include:

●       Valerie Gilman, Ward 4 City Councilor and City Council President

●       Sean Nolan, Ward 5 City Councilor and City Council Vice President

●       Bill Hellmuth, Gloucester Resident

●       John Bourneuf, Gloucester Resident

●       Karen Bell, Gloucester Resident

●       Doug Fifield, Gloucester Resident

In addition to creating the Private Roads Working Group, Mayor Verga has made a significant investment into the Department of Public Works budget for the City’s public streets. The Mayor has committed $300,000 in a supplemental appropriation for this fiscal year and increased the pothole budget for Fiscal Year 2023 to more than five times the current budget. This financial support will allow the DPW to make significant improvements to Gloucester’s public ways.
