Sunset Cruise from Annisquam

A while back, Maritime Gloucester held a fundraising auction and we secured a sunset cruise from Capt Holly Treat, a Maritime Gloucester Board member. We were very happy to support such a worthy organization and got a boat ride as a bonus! After some wrangling over dates, we finally settled on a perfect evening (Tuesday night) for our personalized cove tour from the Annisquam Yacht Club as the sun was setting. The water was silky calm, the heat wave had broken and the company was outstanding aboard the Gizmo. We chatted quite a bit about Maritime Gloucester and its recent improvements as well as its contributions to the community. Truly, if you have not been by since your 4th grade field trip, DO IT! Until then, enjoy some of our coast from the water at dusk. Thank you Capt Holly for your work with Maritime Gloucester as well as for your hospitality!

The heat wave is finally over and it’s perfect deck weather!

Gloucester Gig Rowers Going Through The Cut

Hi Joe

Captured the gig rowers going through the Blynman bridge today on my walk. Just don’t see them pass through there very often. Just passing it on!

Enjoy

GLOUCESTER CULTURE SPLASH Gallery Strolls and Live Poetry on July 28

Culture Splash is a summer series of weekly Thursday events focused on connecting Gloucester’s two designated cultural districts: Harbortown and Rocky Neck. Gloucester is the only city in Massachusetts with two official cultural districts! Culture Splash is now in its second successful year, running on Thursdays through June, July, and August from 4:00-7:00pm, with a FREE Water Shuttle with Cape Ann Harbor Tours offered from 4:00-8:00pm, so “Splashers” can travel easily between events in both districts. The shuttle picks up and drops off at the docks at the Harbormaster building at Harbor Loop and at The Studio Restaurant on Rocky Neck.

Over 40 cultural organizations and small businesses are collaborating on this series, celebrating Gloucester’s robust cultural history and offerings. This collaboration is led by arts and culture industry leaders in Gloucester and made possible by City support, as well as grant funding from the Massachusetts Cultural Council. A couple of the most dedicated volunteer contributors are Courtney Richardson, Executive Director of Rocky Neck Art Colony, and Michael DeKoster, Executive Director of Maritime Gloucester.  Thursday, July 28 will bring about a special Culture Splash experience in Harbortown: a gallery stroll!

“Culture Splash is the best way to see all that Harbortown Cultural District has to offer, and that includes some of our world-class art galleries. What a great way to spend a Thursday evening! With this stroll you can move from gallery to gallery at your pace, enjoy local stores, grab a drink or dinner, stop in at local museums, and then take the free Harbor Shuttle to Rocky Neck and continue the fun. What a wonderful way to enjoy our city’s cultural scene,” says Michael DeKoster, Executive Director of Maritime Gloucester.

The Harbortown Gallery Stroll will feature fine arts experiences, hand crafted works, and displays at Beth Williams Studio, Cape Ann Museum, Charles Fine Arts, Chloe Leigh Designs, Jane Deering Gallery, Local Colors, and Matthew Swift Gallery. Refreshments will be offered to visitors.

On Rocky Neck, a hub of art galleries and one of the state’s first designated cultural districts, stroll to Cove Gallery, the Cultural Center at Rocky Neck, Imagine Gallery, Judythe Evans Meagher Gallery, Madfish Gallery, Michalak Fine Arts, Stephen LaPierre Gallery, and Hughes Bosca/Side Street Gallery! Rocky Neck’s featured cultural organization for July 28 is Gloucester Writers Center who will host a scenic Introduction to Haiku Workshop at 3:00pm and live poetry readings with Amanda Cook and D. Eric Parkison at Gloucester Writers Center at 126 East Main Street starting at 7:00pm. For more information on the Haiku Workshop, interested parties should register by email to adam@gloucesterwriters.org

“I love that Culture Splash brings new audiences to visit artists that have been living and working here for years! Rocky Neck has been home to working artists and their galleries for more than a century and this event honors that cultural history, giving Gloucester’s artists more visibility. Culture Splash is truly a collaborative effort between our two cultural districts, and it’s beautiful to see that partnership bringing arts and culture to the community,” says Courtney Richardson, Rocky Neck Art Colony Executive Director.

Beyond strolling galleries, you can find art displays at the Beauport Hotel in Harbortown and at Ocean Alliance on Rocky Neck, in addition to an abundant lineup of other cultural events including live music, performances, poetry readings, art demonstrations, and specials at restaurants and boutiques!

Visit discovergloucester.com/culture-splash to learn more, and access the event map, updated weekly with Culture Splash happenings.

This event series is made possible by grant funding from the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
