High “Spring” Tide

We are currently experiencing a perigean spring tide, meaning it’s a very high tide that occurs when the moon is either new or full and closest to the earth. I had never heard that term before but I expect you have noticed the higher-than-normal tides in the past few days. Here as some pictures from Little River Public Landing, Good Harbor Beach, Essex Marsh/Farnhams and Essex Ave two days ago at high tide. Some additional information from NOAA if you are interested at this link. It’s been impressive.

1939 Naval Mission Out of Gloucester?

Jeanne Beckwith writes:

My name is Jeanne Beckwith. Iโ€™m a โ€œworkingโ€ playwright, which is a euphemism for a playwright who is not famous and not rich, but I have won awards and had productions from San Francisco to Istanbul. Right now, I am working on a play about Gloucester and a part of its history that is rather cloudy. I am hoping that someone in the โ€œGood Morning Gloucesterโ€ audience might have heard something about this from their parents or grandparents? It was a long time ago, but maybe something like this has come up before.

I have a strong attachment to Gloucester because my father met my mother while he was working out of Gloucester. He was in the Navy in 1939; his boat, under the guise of a commercial fishing vessel, was going out of Gloucester almost daily, and the crew spent their time โ€œfishingโ€ for German submarines that were patrolling the Atlantic.  The war had not officially started yet, and the German subs werenโ€™t supposed to be there, but they were. Occasionally, the subs would surface and the German submariners would buy fish from my fatherโ€™s boat.

To date I canโ€™t find any documentation of any of this in Naval records. I do know that Gloucester was not the only place this was going on; undercover boats were going out on patrol all along the East Coast. But as far as the Navy is concerned, for a couple of years my father and the rest of his crew did not exist. I worry that maybe this is not a totally true story or Iโ€™m remembering it incorrectly, but I donโ€™t think so. I canโ€™t imagine my Dad lying, but he might have exaggerated.

If anyone out there knows anything about this โ€œtale,โ€ I would love to hear from you. I live in Vermont, and I havenโ€™t been back to Gloucester since the world closed down, but I hope to make it back down soon to snoop around.  In the meantime, I will continue to write the play, reminding myself that, as a playwright, I can always just make stuff upโ€”in fact, a sea serpent sighting will almost certainly be involved. Life goes on, and so will I. Thank you for your time and attention.

Sincerely,

Jeanne Beckwith

The largest gross stock and gross a st share made by a Gloucester fishing boat for several ycars, was that made yesterday by the local auxiliary fishing dragger Benjamin C., Capt. Joseph Ciaramitaro, 33 ycars, y Washington square, yesterday. The drag-ger arrived al Boston Fish Pier and sold her trip of 198,500 pounds of groundfish for $17,300. Each of the 12-man crew are reported to have re-reived a gross share of $733.

Another newsworthy note in the local fisheries, is that the Gloucester dragger. Pantrades Androssaโ€™

Make The Library One of Your HOliday Stops!

I hadn’t been to the temporary home of the Sawyer Free Library at 21 Main St in Gloucester yet so I stopped by to load up on reading material for the long Thanksgiving weekend. I didn’t expect much out of the smaller space they moved into while renovations were happening but I was pleasantly surprised with what has been done with the space that is available. The space is well staffed, nicely laid out and offers most of the amenities we are accustomed to. There were several patrons there as I wandered around checking things out. The biggest and best surprise (for me) was that the local history department is up and running with at least some of their most popular materials. For me, it’s the microfilmed Gloucester Daily Times! Thanks library staff for making the space pleasant for patrons once again. Don’t be hesitant to give it a try for yourself!

F Whole Foods

AP reports:

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) โ€” Environmental groups are once again at odds with politicians and fishermen in New England in the wake of a decision by high-end retail giant Whole Foods to stop selling Maine lobster.

Whole Foods recently said that it will stop selling lobster from the Gulf of Maine at hundreds of its stores around the country. The company cited decisions by a pair of sustainability organizations to take away their endorsements of the U.S. lobster fishing industry.

The organizations, Marine Stewardship Council and Seafood Watch, both cited concerns about risks to rare North Atlantic right whales from fishing gear. Entanglement in gear is one of the biggest threats to the whales.

The decision by Whole Foods was an โ€œimportant action to protect the highly endangeredโ€ whale, said Virginia Carter, an associate with the Save Americaโ€™s Wildlife Campaign at Environment America Research & Policy Center.
