We found this determined egret in West Gloucester recently working its catch so that it could be consumed. The egret had a large fish and was trying to position it so that it could be swallowed. It dipped the fish several times into the water and back up again. Finally it was in position and down the hatch it went. You could clearly see the lump traveling down and such a large chunk apparently required a follow up gulp of water or two. This took several minutes and brought to mind a quote from my mother (adapted for the occasion): Be careful what you fish for. You might get it.

Registration is now open for CAPE ANN ARTS ALIVE, a late-summer arts program for children, designed to foster pride and a sense of belonging to the rich cultural heritage of

Cape Ann through music, dance, theater, art, and engagement with nature and community.

WHO: For children (age 6-12) and teenage mentors (age 13-17).

WHAT:An experiential performance/arts program.

Each morning is full of singing, dancing, theatrics, and art projects that reflect the unique essence of Cape Ann. In the past we have explored the legends of Dogtown and the Gloucester Harbor, the story of Joan of Arc on Washington St., the Bells and the Sculptures of Gloucester, the Times and Tides of Cape Ann over centuries, and the many different Boats that have traversed her waters. Our theme for 2023? Gloucester’s400+yearhistory, of course!

WHERE: St. John’s Episcopal Church, 48 Middle St., Gloucester.

Daily activities are based at SJC’s versatile, centrally located facility, with two excursions:

1. Tuesday, Cape Ann Museum for a guided tour and hands-on workshop
2. Wednesday, a harbor sail on the Schooner Adventure.

WHEN: August 21-25, Monday-Friday, 8:30am –1:00 pm.

HOW:Each morning children will rotate through a schedule of music/dance/theater/arts activities, led by a staff of artist/musician educators and other facilitators.

WHY: Because it is soooooo much FUN to learn about this magnificent region, and celebrate with friends and community through the arts!

OUR MISSION is to foster children’s appreciation for the unique environment, history and culture of Cape Ann, as well as their sense of belonging to the ongoing story of this unique region. Through the creative disciplines of music, visual arts, theater, dance, and connection with the people and places of the area, we strive to cultivate curiosity, encourage artistic expression, build confidence and a desire to engage generously with peers and community.

We’ve made great progress the last couple weeks in prepping our race dories for the season.  Thank you to those who donated some time to help!!  We have a little more work to do before the launch, so if you can spare a couple hours this Saturday, May 6th, between 9am – 12 noon, meet us at 28 Gee Ave in Gloucester to roll the dories and finish the painting of the insides.  The weather looks great for painting and with a little help, we can finish them up and be ready to launch on May 13th.

We finally got ourselves over to Topside Bistro for a weekday dinner. Formerly Topside Grill, the new Topside Grill on Rogers Street is now open and operating. It was a quiet evening downstairs for our dinner. The booth style seats appear to be refurbished, there’s local artwork on the walls and as one other customer noted “It’s a great bar up there.”

I had a house salad with sirloin tips and Jim tried the shrimp tacos. There are plenty of non-meat options as well as a variety of non alcoholic drinks. There’s a good selection of appetizers, several of which appealed to me for a meal choice. We enjoyed a pleasant meal with excellent service (thanks Erika!). The bar area indeed was hopping! GLOUCESTER STAGE COMPANY (Rebecca Bradshaw, Artistic Director; Christopher Griffith, Managing Director) is proud to announce the opening of its 44th Season with a fresh take on Noël Coward‘s iconic 1930’s comedy, PRIVATE LIVES. Directed by award-winning director, educator, and actor, Diego Arciniegas, this Tony Award and Drama Desk Winner for Best Revival will run from June 2 through June 25.

Set in a sophisticated world of cocktails, glamour, and sparkling repartee, PRIVATE LIVES, one of Noël Coward’s most brilliantly realized plays, is an uproarious romantic comedy that follows the ups, downs, and all-around of passion and betrayal. In this wildly entertaining revival, once-married Elyot and Amanda cross paths on their unexpectedly adjoined honeymoons – the same hotel, same resentments, but with new spouses. Sharp words evolve into fresh sparks, followed by an endless roundabout of chaos and romance where enemies become lovers and lovers become fools. 

Making his Gloucester Stage directorial debut, Diego Archinegas brings a unique perspective to this beloved classic, infusing it with a modern sensibility and fresh energy. PRIVATE LIVES’ accomplished cast includes Jennifer Bubriski(Louise), Katie Croyle (Amanda Prynne), Gunnar Manchester (Elyot Chase), Stephen Shore (Victor Prynne), and Serenity S’rae(Sibyl Chase).

I’ve always thought I detected darker, truer people lurking beneath the effervescence of his allegedly and admittedly glib comedies,” shared PRIVATE LIVES’ Director Diego Archinegas. “Time has revealed Coward engaged in espionage on behalf of the British Government. If the plays, the international tours, and the cabarets were the cover, I wonder if there might not be more than personal frailty lurking beneath the shallow mask of his character’s manners.”

There are over 600,000 bridges in America. They continue to do their job over the years, and many have intriguing stories.

America’s oldest seaport, Gloucester, Massachusetts, has sixteen bridges but only three of them have a significant impact on the history, culture, and social wellbeing of the residents. Their unique function is to provide access off and on the island for thousands of people a day. This is a history of their reason for being, construction, maintenance, failures, and successes over the years since the Blynman Drawbridge and Canal were built in 1643 to the Gloucester Railroad Drawbridge in 1911 and the giant 800-foot steel arch span A. Piatt Andrew Bridge built in 1950 as part of the completion of Route 128. 

As Gloucester celebrates its quadricentennial in 2023 this book will be part of the 400 years of unique memories that only these three bridges can provide.
