Gloucester has always understood what it costs to make a living on the water. When someone is hurt or falls ill offshore, there’s no ambulance on the way. The people who can help are the ones already on board. Fishing Partnership Support Services (FPSS) wants every one of them ready to act.

On Friday, October 16, 2026, FPSS will hold its free Fishermen’s First Aid & CPR course from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the DES Portuguese Club, 133 Prospect St., Gloucester. The FPSS safety team and its community health workers, called Navigators, will run the training.

“Fishermen are the first responders at sea,” FPSS says. The course goes beyond standard CPR and First Aid. It teaches the skills crews need to assess and treat an injured or sick crewmate on a fishing vessel until emergency medical help arrives. Participants earn Adult First Aid/CPR/AED Certification, which meets USCG requirements under 46 CFR 28.2.10.

Every commercial fisherman who completes the course will also get a free First Aid Kit customized for fishing vessels (one per vessel).

A lifejacket that fits the work

Falls overboard are still the second-leading cause of death in commercial fishing, both regionally and nationally. Wearing a lifejacket greatly improves the odds of surviving one, but only if it’s actually worn. At the training, fishermen can try on different styles to find one they can work in comfortably. Through a partnership with The Northeast Center for Occupational Health and Safety, participants are also eligible for a 50% rebate on a lifejacket of their choice.

Fishermen say it works

Past participants say the training is practical and relevant to their work. “Cemented a lot of things that I only vaguely knew.  Learned a lot that I otherwise didn’t know.” shared Logan P. “Although it’s fast-paced and packed into one day, [it was] extremely informative & boosted my confidence that I could help someone in trouble,” said Henry B., a commercial fisherman who also completed the course.

Registration

The training is free. Fishermen can register at fishingpartnership.org/calendar or by contacting Fishing Partnership Navigator Maria Carpenter at mcarpenter@fishingpartnership.org or by phone/text at 774-770-5685.

Media opportunity: Reporters and photographers are invited to attend. There will be opportunities to take engaging photographs as well as time to connect directly with fishermen. Please contact Windy Jansen to arrange access.

There is no question in my mind that the beef carpaccio sandwich at 51 Rocky Neck is currently the best sandwich in Gloucester

I say this with no hesitation.

I know. It sounds like a strong statement. You gotta try it. Outrageously good.

Osprey Population North of Boston Marks Nearly a Decade of Growth

Greenbelt Staff and Volunteers Document 103 Breeding Pairs, 127 Fledglings During 2026 Breeding Season

(Essex, MA) — The Osprey population north of Boston and throughout Essex County continued to grow during the 2026 breeding season, marking the ninth consecutive year of recovery for this once-endangered species.

As part of Greenbelt’s Osprey Conservation Program, staff and volunteers documented a record 103 breeding pairs across the region between April and September — up from 92 last year — as well as 127 fledglings. As cooler temperatures arrive, most of the region’s Ospreys have begun their annual migration south to warmer climates.

“The continued growth of the Osprey population across the region is a remarkable conservation success story,” says Dave Rimmer, Greenbelt’s Osprey Program Director. “By protecting and stewarding wildlife habitat, building and maintaining nesting platforms, collecting and sharing data, and engaging the public in our efforts, we’ve raised awareness and helped create the conditions necessary for their population to thrive.”

Greenbelt’s Osprey conservation work is part of a broader commitment to protecting and restoring habitat across the region, helping safeguard the landscapes that support a wide range of other wildlife.

Data gathered during the 2026 season offers important insights into nesting behavior, habitat preferences, and long-term population trends in northeastern Massachusetts. As part of Greenbelt’s Osprey Program, more than 40 trained volunteer community scientists monitored nests and documented breeding activity throughout the region, submitting more than 2,300 online observation reports.

A highlight of the 2026 season was Greenbelt’s popular OspreyCam, located on an active nest atop a wooden platform in the salt marsh behind Lobsta Land Restaurant in Gloucester. The live-streaming webcam drew thousands of views during the breeding season, allowing the public to follow the nesting activity of longtime residents Annie and Squam in real time. The pair raised two chicks this year — Sunny and Stormy — bringing their total to 20 chicks since the camera was installed in 2018.

Dancing Sea Foam and a footbridge to nowhere

On Sunday, the ocean was still putting on a show.  The Sea Foam was dancing all over the Back Shore.

What is sea foam?  From the National Ocean Service.

Sea foam forms when dissolved organic matter in the ocean is churned up.

If you scoop up some water from the ocean in a clear glass and look at it closely, you’ll see that it’s chock full of tiny particles. Seawater contains dissolved salts, proteins, fats, dead algae, detergents and other pollutants, and a bunch of other bits and pieces of organic and artificial matter. If you shake this glass of ocean water vigorously, small bubbles will form on the surface of the liquid.

Sea foam forms in this way – but on a much grander scale – when the ocean is agitated by wind and waves. Each coastal region has differing conditions governing the formation of sea foams.

Algal blooms are one common source of thick sea foams. When large blooms of algae decay offshore, great amounts of decaying algal matter often wash ashore. Foam forms as this organic matter is churned up by the surf.

Stacy Boulevard Dahlia Bouquet Sale

Saturday October 3th at 10:00 by the tennis courts

Generous Gardeners volunteers will be cutting and arranging the amazing dahlias for sale to the public Saturday morning. The flowers will be in vases for you to transport home. The dahlias are spectacular this year, so be sure to see the show of flowers before this event. Arrangements will not be set aside or pre-sold.

We do expect the flowers to continue blooming, so if you cannot make it this Saturday, find Antonietta on the boulevard (or call or text her at the number below) over the next few weeks and she will make individual arrangements for you to purchase up until we dig them out. We will not be selling tubers this fall. Any extra dahlia tubers will be sold at our spring tuber sale that is always first Saturday in June.

Thank you for your support.
