She’s back … and she brought a friend. Let’s welcome Chelsea & Megan tonight at the Brew Pub @ 5pm.

Last month, one of our favorite local artists, Chelsea Berry brought a friend to town: Colorado singer/songwriter Megan Burtt — and now she one of our favorites too.  Here are two videos from one of last month’s concerts.

Powerful story of friendship and adventure followed by a song full of wisdom that seems far beyond her years (see more videos from that concert here.)

One  of our favorite Chelsea Berry songs that we think she should sing at every gig!

There’s music all day today.  It’s going on now at Alchemy and continues into late in the evening at Dog Bar, where Ryan Alto starts at 9.  See the full music lineup here.

Independence Day

Independence Day

Tugboat Independence

from the Gloucester Daily Times;

The Independence’s many roles for Neptune GDF Suez provide “safety and security responsibilities, a communication conduit to the maritime community and logistical support for (tanker) personnel and equipment,” White said. Neptune GDF Suez has also offered Independence’s firefighting capability to the city of Gloucester should a waterfront fire ever occur.” CLICK HERE TO READ THE WHOLE ARTICLE

Granite from over the bridge

The rocks and water in these photos remind me of the rocks on the coast of Gloucester, although they are actually in northeastern Connecticut, in the town of Putnam, just a few minutes from my hometown.  The geology is probably very similar.

Gloucester Webcam of The Day- Toodeloos Toy Store

This Webcam and more can be found at www.gloucesterwebcam.com

Check Out The Toodeloos Website Here

This www.gloucesterwebcam.com local webcam portal project was an idea I had last year to have as many webcams streaming from local businesses or organizations as possible which highlight the incredible vistas that we as people that live and work here get to enjoy each and every day.

The idea was to have the organization install the webcam, have them embed the webcam feed on their own websites as well and have a link to each business website on the Gloucester webcam portal website to showcase their business as well.

Tim Blakeley from Gloucester Bytes provided the initial installation at ridiculously cheap cost because he believed in the project.

CALLING ALL DOGTOWN FAMILY PHOTOS!

CALLING ALL DOGTOWN FAMILY PHOTOS!

From the collection of the Cape Ann Museum.

Collection of the Cape Ann Museum.

In conjunction with its upcoming exhibition of works by 20th century artist Marsden Hartley, the Cape Ann Museum has put out a call for snapshots taken by Cape Ann families in Dogtown over the decades. The images will be used in an installation entitled It’s All About Dogtown to be held at the Museum’s White-Ellery House in September. If you have photographs of your family in Dogtown and are willing to share with us, we would like to speak with you. Images can be dropped off at the Museum’s Front Desk; they should be labeled with your name and your contact information. The Museum will make a copy of your images then return the originals to you. For additional information, please call the Museum at 978-283-0455, ext. 17.

76 Summer Days Until the Big Race

(Sung to the tune of 76 Trombones)
Seventy six summer days until the big parade,
with at least a hundred and ten dory rowers motoring away.
They were followed by rows and rows of the finest kayaks;
the cream of the Cape Ann waterways!

I’ll quit with one verse …

Blackburn Challenge: Saturday July 14.  There will be a kayak pod of “not the extremely swift” led by Wendie Demuth.

Click map for more  links and info.

There is also a short 5 mile race in the Essex River on Saturday, May 19th. Just go to the Cape Ann Rowing Club Web Site and you can sign up for both right now! Go ahead. It’s easy. You are probably an SK-male or SK-female boat length say 18 feet beam 25 inches. They take MasterCard and you get a cool T-Shirt you can wear to the GMG Mug-Ups to prove you did it. (SK means sea kayak which is what you have unless you are the Lance Armstrong of kayakers. Check your kibbles and bits to see if you are male or female.)

Rubber Duck signed up for both! ( I have got to hide the credit card.)

Rubber Duck Kayak Quick Tips: If you are thinking of going out to get in shape the water  temp at AO1 buoy today is 46F:

1) Do not kayak alone. 2) Wear and buckle up a PFD.  3) Dress for the water temp, not the sunny air temp. 4) Stick to the shore like glue. 5) A hand pump, a paddle float, a waterproof handheld radio tuned to VHS 16 are all good things to strap on your boat but only if you know how and when to use them.

City Hall restoration work

As promised in the newspapers a few weeks ago, it looks like the scaffolding is just about complete and restoration work about to begin on our beautiful and historic City Hall in Gloucester. Here are some photos I took on Wednesday evening and Thursday morning.

It takes a special kind of person to be able to work on top of scaffolding like that.  My knees would be turning to jelly.  May the people up there stay safe, and may their work go smoothly!

Warren Buffet Quote of The Week From Greg Bover

April 26, 2012
“Never ask a barber if you need a haircut.”
Warren Buffet (1930-      )

image

Among the three or four richest people in the world, Buffet, CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, had a net worth of $62 Billion in 2011. He is often described as the Sage of Omaha, for his hometown and investing acumen. He was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer and has pledged to give away almost all of his wealth through the Gates Foundation. When he found that he paid a lower tax rate than his employees who made far less money he proposed the “Buffet Rule” increasing the tax rate for the wealthiest individuals. He is a avid player of bridge and funds a yearly competition between American and European players.
