Gloucester Harbor Walk August 2012

I thought GMG readers would like to see just how far we’ve come! The before photos of I4-C2 were taken in May, of this year!
My View of Life on the Dock
As many of you know, ORLEANS’ founding member, John Hall will re-join the band for their 40th Anniversary Tour — and their first east-coast concert is at North Shore Music Theatre on Fri, Aug 31 (get tickets here).
You probably also know that Gloucester’s extraordinarily talented musician, Fly Amero is a longtime member of ORLEANS, which means he’ll be with the band on Aug 31.
What you may not know is that Fly is also very talented with Photoshop — and he created a new photo for us to use for the top of the new poster, which will be showing up around town starting today.
Looking at the poster, you’ll also notice that award-winning Gloucester songwriter Allen Estes is opening.
And that 10% of profits will benefit summer camp programs at the YMCA of the North Shore (where 1 in 4 kids attend only because of your generosity).
This will be one of those shows that you talk about for years!
Allen will make a special appearance tonight at 6:30 to open the Harbor Loop concert with one of his signature songs about Gloucester as part of Harbor Walk Weekend, which starts NOW!
It’s such a great weekend that I can only think of one tiny bit of bad news: you just can’t see all the live music, so you’re gonna have to choose.
Here’s some help with that — get the full live music lineup here.

GLOUCESTER
This town’s last national burst of buzz came from the movie version of “The Perfect Storm,” in which desperate fishermen going farther and farther out in search of dwindling stocks of swordfish were swept into the abyss by a hurricane. You may soon hear about Gloucester again, as visionary leaders chart out what they hope is a perfect scenario of renewal. There are still hundreds of working fishermen here, but officials now talk of Gloucester becoming a cluster for a much broader “marine economy.” Picture an aquatic Silicon Valley — a center of research on the “wired ocean” and a workshop for entrepreneurs developing products based on discoveries from the deep.

Gloucester Mayor Carolyn Kirk demonstrates how QR codes enable an interactive smartphone tour along the city’s HarborWalk.
“This is what’s happening to the city, this is where we’re going,” vows Mayor Carolyn Kirk. “Come hell or high water, we’re going there.”
Touring the city this week, there was ample evidence that Gloucester can build on its seafaring heritage, even as it seeks to develop economic niches beyond fishing.
I am going away for a spiritual retreat for the week, so if you are a person of faith, please keep me in your prayers! My posts in my absence are a series of photos from the street bazaar.
Rockport is an awesome, beautiful place, but some of us who live here would like to shake things up a little bit. So we’re throwing an art party of sorts on August 18th right in downtown Rockport. And to truly make this a community event, I set up a project page on Kickstarter. I’ve been really out of it lately, having a baby and trying to stay awake during daylight hours, so putting this together on Kickstarter took some more mental prowess than I expected, but I figured it out eventually (hats off to GMG contributor E.J. who funded her book project with your support through Kickstarter!). Anyway if you’re one of the Cape Ann locals or visitors who want to see art happen in spontaneous ways in dowtown Rockport, check out the Art Exchange project to see if it’s something you can support. We are funding this event with a goal of $500 and so far we have $50 raised, which is exciting! Feel free to email me (Sarah) at artnowrockport@gmail.com or therovinghome@gmail.com with any questions about the project or the event itself. And just click the image to find out more:

Hi Friends,
I am proudly involved in a four week show at the new Cultural Center at Rocky Neck. I will have three pieces on display and for sale from August 8 to September 4. The show is open Thursday through Sunday for visitors from 12-4pm. All are welcome to come to the Opening Reception this Sunday August 12 from 4 to 6pm. The Cultural Center, 6 Wonson Street in Gloucester, is a lovely carpenter/Gothic style church that has been newly transformed. Please come check it out if you can. I will be working the show this Sat, from 2 to 4 and Sunday from 12 to 6.
hope you all are well!
Warmly,
~Loren

Joey… Here are some faces to go with the schooner photos![]()
Schooner captains Linda Gunn (FAREWELL) Steve Briggs (NORFOLK REBEL) and Nicholas Alley (VIRGINIA) at last year’s Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race Pig and Oyster Roast Awards Ceremony. Nicholas won the Mayor’s Cup with VIRGINIA in Gloucester in 2007 and in this photo had just collected his Gorton’s hat. He is now in BRILLIANT and has space for passengers this year coming and going between Mystic and Gloucester.
Captains Matt Sutphin (TYRONE) and Ted Romanowski (GOOD FORTUNE) at an early breakfast at the Fort Square. We were scoping out places to berth 60 ft TYRONE during the Schooner Festival. Matt has passenger spaces coming and going to Gloucester and also for these events.

OK…maybe it’s just me, but I’m overwhelmed by the amount of technology that’s at my finger tips with this ‘smart phone’. The Harbor Walk talking post have lead me into the world of bar code scanning. These talkingpost have a wealth of information for both tourist and residents alike. You will have to down load a barcode app to read the funny looking ‘thing a ma jig’ bar code on the sign. You will see a menu of great info. I still haven’t been able to get the audio but I’ll figure that out or one of our FOB’s will be kind enough to let me know what this dummy is doing wrong with his ‘smart phone’. Please don’t tell Joey about this post…he laughs at my tech savy enough already!!
