Gran Prix going on today and tomorrow.. misty out but still lots of fun
If you have to leave the Island of Cape Ann for a wiener.
Make sure you stop by the new home of Karl’s Sausage Kitchen. No longer at Oops, I missed the driveway on Route 1 right before 128,Ā it is now, easy on and off at One Bourbon Street, Peabody, MA. Brats, and otherĀ multipleĀ grill-ableĀ tubular meats and now a cafĆ© with beer, wine, and your favorite German wiener on a plate with real honest to god mustard.
Has anyone checked out the new digs? Click their old Route 1 sign to go to Karl’s Facebook page. They are social media wieners.
Getting ready for my close-up photography workshop tomorrow
Native Flowering Dogwood ~ Cornus florida rubra
I am so excited to be teaching my photography workshop tomorrow. I’ve created an over arching superstructure for the class, from covering camera and photography basics, relevant to close-up photography, onto very specific techniques for capturing wildlife, and even more specific tips for individual species of butterflies.
I’ve been pouring over thousands upon thousands of photos and with over one hundred photos for the slide presentation, each technique will be comprehensively illustrated.
Several of the students have emailed and I am looking forward to meeting everyone.Ā I hope to see you there. Ā Nature in Focus.
Eastern Tailed-blues ~ Everes comyntas
The Eastern Tailed-blue is a relatively small species of butterfly with a total wingspan of approximately one inch. It was at first very surprising to find a little group, of about a dozen or so, wandering around this pink zinnia. Eastern Tailed-blues are very skittish and generally a challenge to photograph well. I quickly realized that they had all recently Ā emerged from their pupal cases. Butterflies emerge from their chrysalides with wet crumpled wings and generally cannot fly until their wings are thoroughly dry. I took advantage of this fact and just snapped away while this unique opportunity presented itself.

Rubber Duck is Torn
Rubber Duck has been enjoying an Italian Restaurant in Rockport that is perfect. Ā It’s like sitting down to family dinner but your mom is an awesome Italian chef serving new eye popping specials every time you walk in. Ā BYOB a nice Italian Cabernet from Sea Breeze and it is yet another eatery on Cape Ann that is spectacular. Ā The surfeit of riches we are all spoiled by.
But Rubber Duck likes to pull in on Friday night without a reservation and grab the last table. Ā If Rubber Duck blabs on GMG that table might be gone. So the question for Rubber Duck:
a) Take the bullet and blab.
b) You’re a bit slow RD, we all know about the place you are quacking about.
c) Shut your bill Rubber Duck before you screw up a good thing.
d) Try to act like a normal duck and make a reservation!
Give me your answer in comments and do not run to the place and blab to Donna that the dude with the red cast on his arm is hiding a duck under the table.
[Addendum] Besides the comments Rubber Duck’s cell phone has been ringing off the hook. Ā The consensus is that RD can call ahead just like everyone else.
Lo Grasso’s Cafe – Bistro,Ā 13 Railroad Avenue,Ā Rockport, MA
Call 978.546.7977 for reservations. Dinner only, opens at 5PM Wed/Thur/Frid/Sat.Ā Tell Donna the Rubber Duck sent you and you’ll get absolutely nothing off.
Wedding Vows on Main Street? From Fred Bodin
Fred Bodin writes-
No, the bride and groom are following their photographer to have pictures taken in the beautiful and historic West End, Gloucester last Saturday afternoon. I didn’t recognize anyone. They had a very large white stretch Limo in Palazola’s parking lot, and when they tried to leave, it was too big to turn around. Jack Palazola kindly unlocked the chain on the Main Street side, so they could escape and proceed with their reception and honeymoon. I heard from Brenda Grimes Davis on my FB Page, that she may know the Gloucester couple, and I offered to share the photo with them.

AND YET ANOTHER… From Sharron Cohen
Jerry Ackerman writes
Joey,
Sharron and her husband David spend a lot of time as volunteer caretakers on Thacher Island , living out there for a week at a time, and always on the watch for terrific photo ops. This is yet another. You may know Sharron as the (former) Bookmobile librarian and driver, and David as the putative bluefish king of Folly Cove. Thought that you might want to share this great sweeping sunrise view with GMGers everywhere!

Waldo Howland Quote of The Week From Greg Bover
From Greensboro, North Carolina
September 27, 2012
āIf you canāt make what you are doing fun, something is wrong with what you are doing.ā
Waldo Howland (1909-1998)
As owners of the Concordia Company of Padanarum, Massachusetts, Howland and designer Ray Hunt created many of the great yachts of the twentieth century including the 39 and 41 foot Concordia yawls, of which more than one hundred were built, and which was considered by many to be the best cruiser ever made. Howlandās autobiographical trilogy, A Life in Boats, gives essential insight into the practice and recent history of American boatbuilding, and also covers his later years as a board member of Mystic Seaport, one of the best collections of historic boats anywhere. Full disclosure: my wifeās niece is married to Waldo Howlandās grandson.
Ardelle Report
Friday report from Mike Dyer aboard the Ardelle… They are lazily making their way down the Chesapeake and are eating like kings! It turns out Harold has some moves in the kitchen and likes to cook. Heās been whipping up pies in his woodstove. Bob Brophy brought all sorts of goose meat and theyāve had goose stew, goose sausage and even goose benedict this morning! For lunch today Harold came up with a goose shepherdās pie. Mike says this is the calm part of the trip and their making up caloric intake from when they were in rough seas and nobody had time or desire to eat. It was pretty hairy but the Ardelle was solid and he wouldnāt have missed that part of the trip for the world. –Sarah Willwerth-Dyer Photos by Pierre Erhard
