Joey:
A bit late, but a few photos from our trip to my Norwegian wife’s sister and family for Christmas in Tjome, south of Oslo. The food and drink are familiar to us here and go on for three days starting Christmas eve. I’ll skip the family photos except for 3 generations of women, my wife, our daughter, and her grandmother 94. The “lighthouse” is national historic re-creation of the original many centuries old “fire in a basket” at Verden’s Ende (World’s end) – I got a hazy sun instead.

On Saturday night, Temple Ahavat Achim offered a Cafe Shalom event, with Henry Allen and the New Swingset as the opener and the Judith Murray Trio as the headliner. It was an evening of beautiful jazz! Here are a few photos. The next Cafe Shalom is on February 9th at 7PM, with “The Blackwood Ramblers” and Daisy Nell.

As far as award shows go ever since Ricky Gervais took over 4 years a go and now with Amy Poelher and Tina Fey taking over the hosting duties along with the nominations and award winners I feel like even though winning an Oscar has more cache I would a hundred times rather watch the Golden Globes.
The Oscars have just become way too pompous and arrogant as opposed to the more fun Golden Globes.
There are two categories of Tuxedos. A Tux, or some crazy variation of a tux where you look like an idiot.
There’s no gray area.

Hi Joey,
The New England Foundation for the Arts monthly bulletin features “Public Art Calls”. Go to their fantastic website—it’s chock-full of cultivating creative arts throughout New England and beyond. Besides their major funding and linking, they also feature opportunities beyond their organization. The Committee for the Arts was thrilled to see that the Gloucester HarborWalk Public Art Challenge is listed in the January blog. Thank you NEFA. It’s great to see what’s out there and for Gloucester to be in the mix. Check out the range of art projects that municipalities seek. Sign up for their newsletter or whatever social media platform jazzes for you—they’re plugged in!
Elysian McNiff, NEFA’s Public Art & Creative Communities Program coordinator (check out her program btw), writes their monthly column and p.s. she grew up here!

Hi Joey,
Another gorgeous day on Monday. Amazing how 40 degrees can feel so warm. I
decided to go to Old Garden Beach after work. Here are a few of my favorite
photos from my January day at the beach.

Hi Joey-
I hope you are enjoying a well deserved vacation!
I wanted to share my great experience with Tiny Planet Computer on Rogers Street. I recently ran into some issues adding a new email account from a remote server to my laptop. Steve Day walked me through the issues, explaining things along the way so I could trouble shoot on my own in the future. He never made me feel inept as sometimes happens when seeking tech counsel. He also helped sync the account to my phone and ensured they were playing well together! The service fee was reasonable and my issues were quickly addressed. Nice guy, great local company. I highly recommend Tiny Planet if you need technology/computer expertise.
Thanks, Joey.

I think two different people sent this in, JP from Rockport and Vicki Gamage. Not sure if they saw it on the same site or not or if they both just happened to run across it on youtube. If they saw it someplace on another site let me know and I’ll credit them.
Joey,
Happy New Year. As we finalize our public winter lecture series at Maritime Gloucester, I was hoping that I could use your community blog to ask viewers about potential speakers. Specifically, I am interested in hosting a series called “Welcome Back” where men and women who grew up on Cape Ann but no longer live here — and have pursued successful maritime, oceanography, fishing or marine sciences careers – would be asked to come back and speak at Maritime Gloucester. GMG Viewers and readers, please send your recommendations to Tom Balf at tbalf@maritimegloucester.org Thanks to all in advance.

@Be_Determined_: Will it be easy? Nope. Will it be worth it? Absolutely.
On December 17, 2007, when Temple Ahavat Achim burned to the ground, all religious objects, including the Temple’s torah scrolls, were lost. The Temple, having now been rebuilt, has begun the process of having a new torah hand printed in the ancient tradition.
Rabbi Yochanan Salazar is a master sofer, or scribe, who today oversaw the Hebrew inscription of a portion of the new torah by members of the congregation. Participation in the process is a moral deed performed as a religious duty.
Summer residents of Gloucester (and year round visitors) Jane Paznik-Bondarin and Andrew Karlin added a letter under the watchful eye and guidance of Rabbi Salazar, starting with a ritual hand washing and ending with the award of a certificate commemorating the event.
So many volunteers today, Maryanne, Rich Bean, B.J. Mohan, Steve Douglas, Bree and her daughter, Patrick Kelly, Rick Moore, Oliver Cleary, Ed Collard, Melissa Cox, Andrew NiCastro, Peter Asaro, Little Jeremiah, Justin, and dad Tim, Nick Zagami and Heather Smidt (they are from Waltham and FOB’s), David Brooks and Donna Ardizzoni, a big THANK YOU. It was another fun ways to spend 5 hours. If I missed anyone to thank please forgive me.

About the Rocky Neck Art Colony
The crown jewel of Gloucester’s harbor community, Rocky Neck is a peninsula surrounding Smith Cove.
It is home to mostly year-round residents and has a thriving summertime population of artists, art galleries
and restaurants, and the Rocky Neck Art Colony, one of the oldest working art colonies in the United States and a 501(c)3 arts organization since 1973. Rocky Neck recently became one of the first five “Designated Massachusetts Cultural Districts” in the state of Massachusetts; this designation denotes past traditions and contemporary vibrancy along with the area’s orientation towards a local creative economy. The mission of the Rocky Neck Art Colony is to nurture excellence in the visual arts and to celebrate the artistic culture of Rocky Neck and the entire Cultural District.
Local Cape Ann buses and seasonal trolleys serve the area and the Gloucester Harbor Water Shuttle makes it easy to visit East Gloucester by water.
The Rocky Neck Art Colony has a noteworthy past; almost every American artist of note has painted on Rocky Neck at some point in his or her career – Milton Avery, Bernard Chaet, Stuart Davis, Marsden Hartley, Mark Rothko, Cecilia Beaux, Fern Coppedge, Adolph Gottleib, Childe Hassam, Emile Gruppe, Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper, Fitz Henry Lane, Frederick Mulhaupt, John Sloan and others.
