Magnolia sieboldii bud ©Kim Smith 2012

Oyama Magnolia Bud (Magnolia sieboldii)

The Oyama Magnolia is often planted adjacent to tea gardens in Japan because the blossom of the small tree nods downward, allowing the seated person to look up into the face of the flower. The first time I  saw (or should say smelled) Magnolia sieboldii was in a wholesale nursery close to the Rhode Island border, where a single large specimen was tucked in with other more common species of magnolia. The divine fragrance emanating from the tree had drawn me towards it. The tree was unmarked, but since I so strongly value fragrance in plants, I had read about it and knew exactly what it was. Spring had not yet sprung in Gloucester and the honeysuckle sweet and citrus fragrance was intoxicating to my winter weary brain. I tied my tag around to claim it and have adored this tree since the day our Oyama Magnolia arrived to our garden.

Award-winning local songwriter/producer wants to help you take your songs to the next level

Check this out from  Brad Byrd, whose songs have appeared on TV shows, including ABC’s Happy Endings, MTV’s Teen Mom, The Challenge, Downtown Girls, VH1’s The TO Show, E! Keeping Up With the Kardashians, and in TV commercials and films, including Bloodline.

Brad says,
Hi there, are you a songwriter!??  Have you ever thought about working with a “producer” to make them, as they say in the biz “fully realized”?? Well, aside from developing my own songs, I LOVE working (and developing relationships) w/other artists/songwriters on their SONGS as a producer, songwriter, arranger, music director, songwriting teacher, drummer, vocalist, and/or guitar player (teacher).  I work out of my home studio, do skype sessions, travel to client’s homes, and have had the unique opportunity of working out of various amazing studios around the country for over 10 years!  If you have songs, and think that working with a producer could help get them (YOU) to next level in your music career, well, I think I can help…

See more here along with a long (shortlist) of musicians you’ve heard of, for whom he’s produced .  If you’re not sure what a “fully realized” song is like, check out his new video, below (more Brad Byrd videos here).

Have you noticed that it  stays light out until almost 6 ? Spring is bustin’ out all over! Like a disease!
But seriously, folks, lets’ stop worrying about our muffin tops and do something about it: dance!!
Therefore, allow me to introduce Mr. John Keegan™, erstwhile leader of “Madhouse”, blues cheerleader, stage manager, and all around general mucky muck. He’s gonna grab your earlobes and twist them into submission, make you scream and cry. You’ll lose 10 lbs. in 3 hours or double Fred’s money back!

John Keegan
The band’s hot, too: We have John Hyde, Chick magnet II and jazz snob, on his organ again, Dave Brown, multi-grained gootarist and silicone slide master  lording over his spaghetti pile of guitar cables and our Irish Ace of Pace, Mr. Benny Benson wailing’ on those skins. and me, too, on base. It’s the dance party of the season!

Pet of the Week-Ruby!

ruby, cape ann animal aid, dog, pet of the week

Hello, my name is Ruby and I am a purebred, three-year-old Beagle.  My story is a little bit different than most – you see, I may have some adjustment issues when I first go into a home.   I have never been in a home!  I have been a hunting dog all my life, but now I am totally free to become a house pet.  I love people and other dogs. and I am very sweet.   If you like to meet me, I am at the Cape Ann Animal Aid located at the Christopher Cutler Rich Animal Shelter, Four Paws Lane in Gloucester (CapeAnnAnimalAid.com).

Wow!  Is this shelter nice!  I think this might be as close to a home as possible.   The staff and volunteer here are so kind to me, I am really feeling special and like a princess.

I hope to meet you soon and as my name says, I am Ruby; a true gem!

Statues & Plaques" in Gloucester From Peter Dorsey

Peter Dorsey writes-

Joey,

From time to time I like exploring Gloucester, and finding important things that I never noticed before. There are several important statues and plaques

around and about which memorialize the men and women of Gloucester in different battles and wars. I’ll send you my photographs of these, and you can put up the ones you think are interesting.

Here is a Civil War statue on Leonard Street that honors the men who fought and died in that war from Annisquam. It is in a quiet little grassy area this is across from the entrance to Rockwood Heights I think.

I am have been a residential real estate broker with Coldwell Banker for 26 years. Also I have started rowing down on Harbor Loop with the Gloucester Rowing Club at Maritime Gloucester. I have roots in Gloucester that go back to 1919 when my father was born here. Every year, as I do business in this city, and travel around Cape Ann, I find more and more interesting things. I like to share some of these finds with my camera.”

HERE WE GO!

The Farm Bar & Grille and Good Morning Gloucester together with YMCA Camp Spindrift present the 3rd annual outdoor bikini/speedo dodgeball tournament to benefit Next Step, a charity that provides aid to children and young adults with life threatening illnesses (www.nextstepnet.org)

2 MAJOR CHANGES THIS YEAR:
The event itself will be held at YMCA Camp Spindrift in West Gloucester. They have an ideal facility to accommodate this event as it grows. Parking will be at nearby Wingaersheek Beach and there will be a shuttle between the parking lot and Camp Spindrift.
On Wednesday, March 13th at 7pm there will be a COMPETITOR’S PRE-EVENT MEETING at the Farm Bar & Grille in Essex, MA (233 Western Ave). The purpose of this meeting will be to give the athletes their tshirts and wristbands, as well as go over the rules of play and verify athletes’ age and make sure swimwear is all legal. At least one person from each team should be present. The idea here is to make everything run smoothly on the day of the event.

This is a 21+ event, all participants MUST be 21+. We will play through snow or light rain, but in the event of extreme weather there is a makeup date the next weekend. This is a double elimination team tournament, each team will have 5 players with a minimum of 2 women per team. We will be using basic team dodge ball rules with a few modifications for the outdoors and teams of 5.

All team members MUST compete in bikini or speedo style swimwear (no swim shorts, jean shorts, etc.) or face automatic elimination. Your team’s competition swimwear must be approved at the pre event meeting at the Farm on Weds, March 13th at 7pm. Send at least one member of your team with your swimwear to pick up wristbands, shirts, and go over details for the competition. You can find some good themed uniforms here, don’t wait until the last minute:
http://www.abcunderwear.com/
http://www.swimoutlet.com/

Non-competitors: there will be a $5 minimum donation at the gate to watch the day’s events. The Farm will have food and drink available on the Camp Spindrift grounds. Remember, ALL of the profits from this event are going to a GREAT CAUSE!

Last years video pretty much sums up the whole day:

For more info on how to register a team, or to volunteer to help with the event or to just make a donation email Joey C at captjoe06@gmail.com, or Frankie G at ftgwynne@gmail.com

DEADLINE: Register your team’s t-shirt sizes by Friday, Feb 8 in order to be guaranteed the size you want, after that, no promises!
