My sister Judy came to visit last weekend with two Guatemalan exchange students they have staying with them.
Marcela Pineda is in an OBGYN program at Mass General; Federico Murga is studying sleep therapy and neurology at Beth Israel. They are both from Guatemala City.
When it was time for lunch, it was straight to the Causeway, Judy’s favorite place to eat in Gloucester. Marcela and Federico both enjoyed it immensely. We all got chowder (my favorite is the fish chowder) and shared seafood platters (yummmm!).

Thank You Policemen Everywhere
We have all been saddened, angered, horrified–emotions run deep and are varied–by the death of MIT Officer Sean Collier, and the deaths of marathon spectators eight-year-old Martin Richard, BU student Lingzi Lu, and 29-year-old Krystle Cambell, as well as the many victims of the bombing whose lives have been permanently altered. I think too, everyone is filled with a great sense of pride for the extraordinary heroism and courage shown by our police officers and rescue workers. Their heroism and compassion was captured live through the extensive and still on-going media coverage of the Boston Marathon bombings and subsequent capture of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. Although an extreme example, we saw a real-time window into their world; a view we won’t quickly forget.
In thinking about how to express support, I first read about the Boston Police Foundation, but my thoughts then turned closer to home in regard to our own Gloucester police officers. I thought you would be interested to learn what I learned about the Gloucester Police Relief Fund.
Officer Scott Duffany, who is president of the Gloucester Police Relief Fund, explained that monies raised from the relief fund goes toward helping families of fallen officers, provides flags for fallen police officer’s graves, and is also directed towards funding projects and events specifically for the Gloucester community, including a continuing effort to help in the rebuilding of Newell Stadium, purchasing lights for the Little League field on the Boulevard, and help in funding the special needs dances held by the Gloucester Fraternity Club.
Chief Campanello asks us to ” focus on the MIT officer who gave his life and the victims of the explosions. We are very appreciative of all the support the public gives us and their sincere desire to help is very moving. This is what you and the citizens of Gloucester pay us to do and we are honored by that trust.”
Upcoming on July 19th is the Gloucester Police Relief Association annual fundraiser USWF Big Time Wresting Show, held at Talbot Rink. In no way were either Chief Campanello or Officer Duffany soliciting donations. I am suggesting, if you are able, to either stop by the police station to give, or send donations to:

CAPE ANN TRAIL STEWARDS
Inaugural Event
Cape Ann Trail Stewards (CATs), a new non-profit organization, announces its upcoming inaugural event.
Cape Ann Trail Stewards was founded by citizens of Gloucester, Rockport, Manchester and Essex to help landowners and conservation organizations protect, maintain and expand Cape Ann’s trail networks.
By matching volunteers with trails in need of stewardship, CATs will connect Cape Ann residents with the vast network of trails in the area and help preserve these recreational resources for our community. Cape Ann Trail Stewards will arrange workdays where volunteers can learn about trail construction and maintenance.
The board of directors includes residents of Gloucester, Rockport, Essex and Manchester, and representatives from the Essex County Greenbelt, Essex County Trails Association, Cape Ann Climbing Coalition, the New England Mountain Bike Association and other user groups.
Cape Ann Trail Stewards invites the public to join the inaugural clean up workday at the city of Gloucester’s Goose Cove Reservoir on Sunday, April 21st (the day before Earth Day) beginning at 1PM.
We will meet in the lot along Gee Avenue. Participants should wear sturdy shoes and dress appropriately for the weather (the event is rain or shine). Bring rakes, shovels and buckets if you have them. CATs will supply gloves and other materials.

“After 12 successful years at our current location, we were at a crossroads. This opportunity came up and we decided it was a good time for us to expand,” said Russo. “We are so excited about our new, sunny spot, and can’t wait for our customers to see it!”

Midwestern humorist, cartoonist, and writer known best for his political commentary, Hubbard was a high school dropout who said his goal in life was to own a circus. He worked briefly as a silhouette artist and attended art school for a short time before beginning cartoon work for the Indianapolis News. For 25 years he drew the acclaimed cartoon “Abe Martin of Brown County” which went into syndication and made him nationally known. Will Rogers cited Hubbard as an influence and called him the greatest humorist of his time.

Bailee’s Cookie and Lemonade Stand To Benefit The Children Of The Boston Marathon Bombings
Joey! How are ya? Was wondering if you could help my 7 year old daughter Bailee out and post about her Cookie & Lemonade Stand which has been running for two days now, we will run again tomorrow from 12-3pm, her goal is to raise $1000.00 for the children injured in the Boston Marathon Bombings, so far she has raised $471.00, we are hoping to raise the last $529.00 tomorrow, hopefully she can do it! Breakfast and Soup at Sailor Stan’s
My mom, Jean Lefavour, came to visit for a couple of days and got to kick up her heels at the dance at the Rocky Neck Center last night, and have breakfast at Sailor Stan’s this morning. We had the McStan’s breakfast sandwiches, which were delicious.
Don’t forget, tomorrow from 3:00-5:00 be at Sailor Stan’s for the Love of Soup Best of Cape Ann Soup Competition, with proceeds to benefit the Center at Rocky Neck. There is still room for a few more soup entries, if you have a great soup you’d like to enter into the competition.
