Drink and Dinner

The Christmas holiday is over. Thank heavens! I hosted so many holiday parties at the gallery this month that I'm totally tuckered out. Now it's time to look forward to 2014 and new adventures. This is an awesome looking Bloody Mary. It could be your dinner and your drink. I'll have mine without the green worms please!

Looking for Seine Boat Rowers

Joey,
The Gloucester Gig Rowers are starting a new intense race and conditioning program and we are looking to reach out to the Seine boat rowers who might want to train with us this season. Could you introduce me to folks in the Seine boat community?

The Grub At Sista Felicia’s

We shucked the Topnecks in record time this year.  Got the assembly line thing down to a science and Felicia’s Polpo was the best she ever did. Hope y’all had a great Christmas.

For Peggy at Pop Gallery

snowy owl

While walking this morning at Stage Fort Park with Elynn Kroger, we encountered this beautiful snowy owl.  A little later, I ran into Peggy Russell from Pop Gallery, who also had seen him, but hadn’t been able to get a shot of him.  This is for you Peggy.  Merry Christmas.  What a special treat on Christmas morning.

Of course it never fails that I encounter something magical when I carry my chumpy little pocket camera.  I wish I’d brought the nice one Paul Frontiero gave me, as I had originally intended.  Lesson.  Never second-guess your first impulse.

Christmas Morning Sunrise, 7:11 am

I traditionally go to outer Cape Cod for the Christmas holiday. A tradition my hosts have is to toast the December 25th sunrise at Coast Guard Beach with shots of Bailey's. Fun way to start the year!

Old Christmas Greysole Fishing Trips

Sam Novello writes-

Dear Joe,

In the past, large Gloucester fishing draggers made annual Christmas fishing trips off the coast of Nova Scotia at a greysole “honeyhole.”  I believe your grandfather may have even found this spot.  From what I understand, the boats used to take turns fishing through this spot one at a time and filling their nets with tows of 25,000 lbs of greysole per tow being common.  This area is now closed to U.S. fisherman because of its location in Canadian waters.  I believe the last Gloucester boats to fish these grounds were in the Joseph & Lucia fleet approximately 25 years ago.  I have always been interested in this old “Christmas trip” and was wondering if any of your readers might have any knowledge or information about these trips and the location of this old greysole honey-hole. Thanks!

Happy Holidays!
