Even Seals Have Frustrating Days

This big rolly polly seal was trying so hard to stay on his rock as the tide came in at Brace Cove.  Eventually the sea won and knocked him off.

Daniel Webster Quote of The Week From Greg Bover

“A strong conviction that something must be done is the parent of many bad measures.”

Daniel Webster (1782 – 1852)

A New Hampshire native and graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy and Dartmouth College, Webster, a member of the Whig Party, served New Hampshire in the House of Representatives and Massachusetts in the Senate during the turbulent years leading up to the Civil War. He worked tirelessly to preserve the Union, opposing efforts at secession by New England during the War of 1812, and by the South in the 1840’s and 50’s. Although known best for his fiery and (by today’s standards) flowery oratory in the Senate, he also served as Secretary of State in the Harrison, Tyler, and Fillmore administrations. Among his many accomplishments, it was Webster who filed legislation introducing pre-paid self-adhesive postage stamps in 1847; his portrait has appeared on Postal Service stamps 11 times, more than most presidents.

Charlie’s Place Odor Of Smoke Reported

Hi Joey
On Friday 1/31/14 an odor of smoke in the building was reported at
Charlie’s Place restaurant on Bass Ave. about 5:00 pm. The latter was
put up to check the HVAC system on the roof as well as checking the
building. I don’t think a cause was found. Recall was sounded soon
after.

Saturday February 1st 2014 Cape Ann Forecast..

MARINE FORECAST…
Sat: W winds 5 to 10 kt…becoming S in the afternoon. Seas 2 to 3 ft.

Sat Night: S winds 10 to 15 kt with gusts up to 20 kt. Seas 3 to 5 ft. A chance of rain.

Today we’re looking at mostly cloudy conditions with temps in low 40’s. Winds rather light from the west at 5-10mph switching to the south late In the day . Saturday night chance of showers with mostly cloudy skies lows around 40 ..

Ok so I wanted to do something different and explain different aspects of the weather . So with that being said let’s start out with “The High Pressure”

Ok so what’s a “High Pressure”
A high-pressure area, high or anticyclone is a region where the atmospheric pressure at the surface of the planet is greater than its surrounding environment.

Winds within high-pressure areas flow outward from the higher pressure areas near their centers towards the lower pressure areas further from their centers. Gravity adds to the forces causing this general movement, because the higher pressure compresses the column of air near the center of the area into greater density – and so greater weight compared to lower pressure, lower density, and lower weight of the air outside the center.

However, because the planet is rotating underneath the atmosphere, and frictional forces arise as the planetary surface drags some atmosphere with it, the air flow from center to periphery is not direct, but is twisted due to the Coriolis effect, or the merely apparent force that arise when the observer is in a rotating frame of reference. Viewed from above this twist in wind direction is in the same direction as the rotation of the planet.

The strongest high-pressure areas are associated with cold air masses which push away out of polar regions during the winter when there is less sun to warm neighboring regions. These Highs change character and weaken once they move further over relatively warmer water bodies.

Somewhat weaker but more common are high pressure areas caused by atmospheric subsidence, that is, areas where large masses of cooler drier air descends from an elevation of 8 to 15 km after the lower temperatures have precipitated out the lighter water vapor. (H2O is about half of the molecular weight of the other two main constituents of the atmosphere—Oxygen, O2, and Nitrogen, N2.)

High pressures can be both our friends or enemies .. Case in point if u have a High Pressure like this one picture below …

20140131-080709.jpg
Then HOUSTON we have a problem .. This is called a “Blocking High” most common in winter months . When u have a very strong high pressure over Greenland , it tends to put on the brakes and cause a traffic jam of Weather across our country .. Most times results in stalling or retro grading monsters off the east coast resulting in lots of snow .. So if u here of A Greenland Block has set up just be ready for long duration storms..
Now our friend “High Pressure” seen below …

20140131-081417.jpg
Is our warm mild position off the East Coast .. Bermuda Highs always bring in mild / warm / and tropical weather in the Summer months … Bermuda highs are often our good friends as far as weather goes .. How ever don’t be fooled During August ESP when Bermuda Highs can steer Tropical systems up our way ! IE. Tropical Storms / Hurricanes… So there’s Blocking Highs / Fair Weather Highs / And Bermuda Highs … Hope u enjoyed … Have a Wonderful Saturday !!!

NORTH SHORE UNITED WAY GRANTS $5,000 TO OLD FARM ROCKPORT

The Board of Directors of the North Shore United Way (NSUW) have voted to award a $5,000 Discretionary Grant to support the outside deck project at the Old Farm in Rockport, a Cognitive Living and Learning Center for survivors of brain injury, expected to open this spring. When completed, Old Farm Rockport will offer eight units of affordable housing for moderately or severely disabled survivors of traumatic brain injury.  NSUW funding will ensure the deck will be 100% handicap accessible, which is an important part of ensuring future residents enjoy a rich quality of life.

The North Shore United Way awards one-time Discretionary Grants up to $5,000 to launch new or innovative programs on the North Shore or for agencies with emergency needs.  Margo Casey, Executive Director of the NSUW, said “We are very pleased to lend support to this important program.  It not only furthers our goal of developing more affordable housing, but it also opens a supportive community to the growing population of adults with traumatic brain injuries. We were moved to put our support behind a project founded and supported by the family and friends of local residents whose lives have been forever impacted by a traumatic brain injury.”

Peter Noonan, Executive Director, Old Farm Rockport, explains that the deck, “adds a great final touch to the project.”  Peter Robbins, Board Chairman, adds, “Old Farm Rockport couldn’t be more pleased and grateful to partner with and receive North Shore United Way’s support, affording us the opportunity to build a place for the residents to enjoy the seaside sun, air and access to outdoor activities.”

The North Shore United Way invests almost $1M each year in projects that transform lives and improve communities now and for future generations.  NSUW is all about local impact by rigorously vetting and supporting 25 causes that serve children, families, and seniors in eight North Shore communities, including Beverly, Hamilton, Wenham, Ipswich, Essex, Manchester, Gloucester and Rockport.  For more information about funded projects and how to get involved, visit nsuw.org or call 978-922-3966.

Hi Joey,

I hope this e-mail finds you well. I am not sure if you remember me but we worked together on a project for “Taste of the Times” with Jackson Cannon at my home. My Aunt Terri Gallo and Uncle Gianni Gallo had also worked on the piece. I am writing to you today in the hopes that you will take a few sentences from your blog to help us better reach this community. I am so lucky to be part of the All Star Foundation for UCD. The Urea cycle disorder is a genetic disorder caused by a mutation that results in a deficiency of one of the six enzymes in the urea cycle. These enzymes are responsible for removing ammonia from the blood stream. The urea cycle involves a series of biochemical steps in which nitrogen, a waste product of protein metabolism, is removed from the blood and converted to a compound called urea in the blood. Normally, the urea is transferred into the urine and removed from the body. In urea cycle disorders, the nitrogen accumulates in the form of ammonia, a highly toxic substance, resulting in hyperammonemia (elevated blood ammonia). Ammonia then reaches the brain through the blood, where it can cause irreversible brain damage, coma and/or death. We are on our 4th annual All Star Benefit and would love it if you could mention the event and help us spread awareness. I have attached the sponsor letter and a brief history of Mary Grace (Sanfilippo) Vestal and Michael Vestal. They are both amazing parents who fight every day for this cause and their children. Michael and Marisa both have UCD, older sister Mia is a spunky, healthy, loving big sister. Michael and Grace are both from Gloucester as well as their Families. They now live in wilmington. Grace takes care of Michael and Marisa full time so she can not work. They hold this benefit to help spread awareness, talk about new born screening, and hopefully someday have a cure! They worked in clinical trials for years and last year were able to have a new drug approved by the FDA. Lets help them make this bigger and better!

Thank you for your time!

As many of you know the kids go to New York to get their medicine. To this point the medicine HPN 100 has been in clinical  trials. We received this email Friday that we wanted to share with everyone. This is a hugh step in the standard of care for kids with born with a UCD’s. The Allstar Foundation can take pride in knowing that we took part in making this happen. Our money helped support the fellowships for the physicians collecting the data for this trail. Thank you so much for all your hard work and support of your special cause.

Hi Everyone,

I am so excited to report that the FDA approved Ravicti (clinical trials were performed under the name HPN-100) this morning for ages 2 years and older.  This is an incredible victory for UCD patients and families!  It has been a 10-year battle, but it has been worth every moment. Thank you to everyone for your support, and for all the patients and families who participated in the clinical trials.  For more information from FDA about the approval:

After Watching The Meet The Coywolf Videos I Got Myself This…

DSC01734

Simple keychain whistle.  Seeing as if you’re living on the North Shore you’ll be living with Coywolf, I figured why not?  Cheap.

The experts on the PBS “Meet The Coywolf” program suggested that if you encounter Coywolf in your yard, you ought to haze them and make them feel uncomfortable.

You can get them on Amazon for like next to nothing.

Fish on Fridays

The Fish on Fridays series is a collaboration between Gloucester photographers Kathy Chapman and Marty Luster. Look for various aspects of Gloucester’s centuries-old fishing industry highlighted here on Fridays.

This week we look at Winter Flounder as it is landed by a Whole Foods F/V at Jodrey State Fish Pier (Gloucester Harbor). Dan Sutter (pictured trying to locate the vessel coming into harbor) and Alfred York work the dock unloading Yellowtail and Blackback Flounder. The flatfish were caught thirty miles off Cape Ann on Jeffrey’s Ledge earlier in the day.
