Beautiful Blue Lobster

For the next few days while in Mexico I thought I’d repost several of the short videos that I made for our community this past year. First up is the Beautiful Blue Lobster, featuring Joey, and filmed at Captain Joe and Sons, with a trio of Pete Seeger songs.

Fish on Fridays

The Fish on Fridays series is a collaboration between Gloucester photographers Kathy Chapman and Marty Luster. Look for various aspects of Gloucester’s centuries-old fishing industry highlighted here on Fridays.

This winter has been tough on everyone, but the fishing industry has been particularly hard hit. In this week’s video, storm scenes set the stage for a chat with Steve Connolly Seafood‘s Romeo Solviletti who describes the effects of this stormy and frigid winter on Gloucester’s fleet, processors and customers.

Thanks to GMG’s own weatherman, Peter J. Lovasco, for his report during a 66 mph blast on the back shore.

Are you a Microcelebrity?

I must be a microcelebrity. Someone I didn’t know yelled out “Hey Paulie Walnuts!” in the middle of Best Buy.

IF YOU SEE ME ON THE BEACH THIS SUMMER, DON'T BE AFRAID TO SAY HI.
IF YOU SEE ME ON THE BEACH THIS SUMMER, DON’T BE AFRAID TO SAY HI.

Become a Microcelebrity
by Clint Watson

Dear Subscriber,

A few weeks ago, I wrote a piece encouraging you, as artists, to create your own community. I discussed building your own community of fans and followers without getting sucked into over-hyped social sites such as MySpace or FaceBook. Reflecting on it a bit more, I realize there is another ingredient to success in online social networking….not only must you build a community…but you must become the leader of that community.

Over this past weekend I read an article in Wired magazine (issue 15.12), Almost Famous by Clive Thompson. The article discusses the relatively recent phenomenon of microcelebrities.

Clive puts it this way:

Microcelebrity is the phenomenon of being extremely well known not to millions but to a small group – a thousand people, or maybe only a few dozen. As DIY media reach ever deeper into our lives, it’s happening to more and more of us….[If you engage in online information publishing via web sites, blogs, and newsletters] odds are there are complete strangers who know about you — and maybe even talk about you.

You, dear artist, need to become a microcelebrity (no doubt many of you already are).

Barrels For Sale

Hi Joey,

I enjoy your blog and check it every day. I have about 20 barrels I would like to sell. (See attached photos). The barrels are 35 gallons. I am in the wholesale flower business and the preservative for the flowers comes in these barrels. There is nothing toxic. The main ingredients were sugar and water.

Please let me know if you or anyone else might be interested. I live in Gloucester and would be happy to drop one off at your place so you can see them.

My cell # is 978-290-1848.

Thanks for your time.

Coconuts Shout Out To SeaPort Veterinary Hospital

Yesterday my son BJ and I snapped a few photos during Coconuts, annual checkup with Dr. Ray Cahill at SeaPort Veterinary Hospital located at 100  Eastern Ave, Gloucester.  Dr.Cahill and his staff are wonderful.  They specialize in getting to know their pet patients, just as well as the owners who care for them.  Our Coconut is a pure breed Conton de Tulear.  The Cottons de Tulear  is a rear breed that is known to be loyal, happy, playful, affectionate, obedient, and healthy.   Dr. Cahill has been treating Coconut for the past few years and is well aware of her temperament and personality.  He lovely settles her nerves before he starts her exam, with his clam and gentle ways gaining Coconuts trust allowing him to give her a thorough exam at each visit.

Thank You Dr. Ray Cahill and Staff for the excellent care you give to our beloved Coconut!

Thomas Jefferson Quote of the Week from Greg Bover

21 February 2014

“Honesty is the first chapter in the book of wisdom.”

Thomas Jefferson (1743 – 1826)

The third President of the United States, Jefferson also served as the Governor of Virginia, Secretary of State under George Washington, member of the Continental Congress, Minister to France, and Vice President under John Adams. He was the principal author of the Declaration of Independence and the founder of the University of Virginia. It was Jefferson who acquired the Louisiana Purchase, doubling the size of the country, and it was he who dispatched Lewis and Clark to explore it. Although a slave owner himself, he signed the 1807 law banning further importation of slaves into the United States. The polymathic Jefferson was an architect, inventor, scientist, philosopher and linguist. It seems to me that Jefferson’s quote must refer to honesty with the self as well as to our dealings with others.

June 1943. “Gloucester, Mass. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Lopez. They have two boys in the armed forces, six children altogether. He is a fish skinner in the Gorton-Pew fishery.” Photo by Gordon Parks, Office of War Information.

To think this man worked on the very property that our Grandfather Captain Joe bought 10 years later in 1953.  Our fathers worked there alongside our grandfather and Frank and I run it now as a lobster company after we diversified away from handling groundfish once the auction opened and we saw the writing on the wall with the new rules being handed down to try to manage how many fishermen could fish. Thanks Geno for sending us the  photo of Gordon-Pew fishery last week-

Scam the Scammers – Let’s have some fun!

Scam phone calls are up.

Today I got a call from a guy who told me there was a problem with my computer (yeah, right) and while I was letting him talk, I got a call on the other line, so I told him I had to go, picked up the other line and guess what?  Another guy from the same company, eSupport Live.  So I decided to play along and see what happened.  He told me that I had unwanted files on my computer and he would help me get rid of them right now.  He was about to ask me to give him remote access to my computer when I said, I’ve gotta go; can I call you back?  Sure, he said and gave me his number 888-514-1650.  He told me his name was Alvin Brown, uh huh — with a very thick Indian (dot-not-feather – as Joey would say) accent.

A couple of minutes later I called back.  888-514-1650 actually works.  I asked for Alvin Brown and explained that we had been cut off and I was calling him back.  They put me on hold for about 90 seconds and finally someone (with a very different voice) said, Hello. Alvin? I asked.  Yes. Alvin Brown?  Yes, sir, can I get your information please?

That’s when I hung up.  I found their website here.  The English is worse than those bad assembly instructions you get with products made in China.

Most likely these people are criminals, trying to hack into your computer to steal your identity, money, whatever.  See a news story about such people here.

I know most FOBs have lots of time on their hands — because since joining the GMG Google+ Community, I get tons of emails a day from them — so I figure why not  spend a little time and have some fun SCAMMING THE SCAMMER!

All you have to do is call and pretend you got their number from the website or a friend.  Ask for Alvin Brown and see what happens.  Or start asking for other people — Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, George Washington, Jimi Hendrix — what ever you can think of.  The longer you keep them on the phone, the more you’ve cost them.  Just don’t give them any real info about yourself.

If you don’t want them calling you back, just block your caller id by hitting *67 before you call.  If we can get hundreds of people calling every day, maybe they’ll give up and stop calling us.

Vickie reminded me of this very funny guy who has a special treat for telemarketers.  Check it out:
