Run to Home Base- I Need your Help!

On Saturday, July 19th, I will be participating in the 5th annual Run to Home Base to help returning Iraq and Afghanistan veterans and their families heal the “invisible wounds” of war.  This is my first 9k! So far I can run a 5k, but I am willing to put in the dedication to train and run for our troops! I hope you can help me out in my fundraising journey by donating. Any amount counts. My goal is to raise $750 by July 15th, but I would love to surpass that with your help!

Let’s Support our Troops who have risked their lives, health and families for us!

Home Base operates one of the only private sector clinics in the nation dedicated to helping veterans and their families recover from post traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury through clinical care, education and research. They have provided additional support for thousands of veterans and family members through free recreational activities, work in public schools, and on college campuses.  Home Base has trained more than 11,000 clinicians nationwide to recognize and treat the invisible wounds in their medical practices, and the program is engaged in national research to improve the treatment and understanding of PTS and TBI.

Here are the Welcome signs that we are asking Gloucester and area stores, attractions and residents to print and post in their windows to welcome the Veendam cruise ship to Gloucester this Sunday, May 4th. The City of Gloucester and the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce are working with Cruiseport on the preparations. Have a look at the list of fun things going on!

Many local businesses and organizations are expanding their hours –or coming in on their day off– just to engender a special welcome.

Let’s remember to thank and support our local establishments! Residents can shop, tour, and eat & drink, too…

Quick facts:

Vessel Name: Veendam

When to open: by 10AM – 4PM (The first passengers will be coming ashore at around 9;30 and reaching downtown Gloucester by about 10AM.)

Passenger count: 2500

Crew count: 845

*If you have any brochures to display for a welcome table, please drop them off to the Chamber by Friday and they will be sure to get them to Cruiseport for Sunday morning.

Some of the special tours and programs being offered:

Fri Night W winds 10 to 15 kt with gusts up to 20 kt… Diminishing to 5 to 10 kt after midnight. Seas around 2 ft.

Friday Forecast … Sunny with a few instability and fair weather clouds highs 66-74° . West to North west winds 10-15mph , can’t rule out a scattered shower / boomer late day early evening .. Friday night clouds few late showers lows in the mid to upper 40’s… Winds light out of the west 10mph…

Open Door Empty Bowl Dinner is right around the corner

Hey Joey,

The Open Door Empty Bowl Dinner is right around the corner on Thursday, May 8, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Cruiseport Gloucester. Can you let GMG readers know that they are invited to join us for an evening of food and hospitality?

The meal is simple—soup, bread and a cookie. Guests can choose and keep a soup bowl handcrafted for this community event. The bowl goes home as an unspoken reminder that somewhere someone’s bowl is empty.

Extra parking is available at Harbor Beach with complimentary trolley service to and from the event site. Tickets available at the door. $15 for adults and $10 for children under ten.

Empty Bowl events are held nationally to generate awareness concerning hunger and to raise money for local hunger-relief programs. Proceeds from this event will benefit the Summer Meals and Mobile Market programs.

Attached are a couple of photos of Silent Auction bowls that will be available that night!

Cape Ann Big Band Only Spring Concert – Saturday May 3rd

A Cape Ann Big Band concert is one of those rare treats that comes along only a couple of times a year — and this Saturday, May 3,  they’re going over the bridge (for their only spring concert this year) to Beverly’s fully restored, historic Larcom Theatre.  Come Swing into Spring with Cape Ann Big Band playing hits from the swing, soul, jazz, and rock’n’roll songbooks as well as show tunes and pop songs.   

If you haven’t been down the road to the Larcom Theatre yet, this is your chance. Thu SE winds 15 to 20 kt…becoming S 10 to 15 kt in the afternoon. Gusts up to 30 kt. Seas 4 to 7 ft. Patchy fog. Showers with a chance of tstms. Some tstms may produce heavy rainfall. Vsby 1 to 3 nm.
Thu Night SW winds around 10 kt with gusts up to 20 kt… Becoming W after midnight. Seas 3 to 5 ft. Patchy fog. A chance of showers. Vsby 1 nm or less.

Forecast : Blah Blah Blah ! Sums up Thursday morning rain / Storms gusty winds from NE , then possibly some clearing by noontime but I wouldn’t count on it ! More showers / storms for the afternoon if we see any sunshine which would destabilize the atmosphere producing clouds and eventually showers / storms … Temps determined by amount of breaks we see , if we see a lot of sunny breaks temps could SOAR!! Into the lower 70°s away from the coast on a South west wind gusting to 30mph.. At the shore temps could possibly reach the 60’s if we break into the warm sector and front passes us to the north ! Again don’t bet on it … Thursday Night temps drop into the 40’s with early evening shower / thunderstorm .. Winds from the west south west 10-20mph …

Why is This Mouse’s Tail Bright Orange?

Mouse orange tail ©KIm Smith 2014JPGBecause my dear husband loves to trap mice, but does not have the heart to kill them. After capturing, he lets the mouse go. I asked, how can he be sure he is not catching the same mouse. He decided to conduct an experiment, painting the tail of any captured mouse with brilliant orange non-washable paint. None have showed up back at our home, but if you happen upon a cute orange-tailed mouse, please let us know!
