Zentagle and Attack of the Cucuzza!

2014-09-22 15.50.27 (1)

GMG FOB Renate Paster-Pusch writes the following ~

“It was so nice to talk to you at the Block Party. As I said, I enjoy your contributions to the GMG blog so much and we listen to the podcast, when we are going on drives. We have not listened to the latest podcast, but will be able to hopefully later today

As promised, I am sending you the picture of Werner being attacked by the snake gourds, that Joey put on the blog 2 (?) years ago. I am also attaching a picture of what I am doing with the dried gourds. I am using Zentangle patterns. I am a certified Zentangle Teacher and am teaching these patterns. You can find out more about zentangle (if you are interested) at www.zentangle.com. I would be glad to give you a complimentary lesson, but I know that you are extremely busy and might not have the time, but it is a great stress reliever and is also called “Yoga of the brain”.

Hope you enjoy the pictures and keep up the good work!”

Thank you Renate for your very kind words and for the offer to learn Zentagle. Your hand painted cucuzza is stunning and reminds me of aboriginal art for didgeridoos. So glad to know you are enjoying the podcasts and Love the photo of Werner!

Big Mike’s Bikes Closing Up Shop

Joey, can you post the following for us?

“We’d like to let you, our customers, know that Big Mike’s Bikes will be closing our doors on Friday, Oct 10. We have other work opportunities to pursue that in the end will be better for our family and most importantly let us spend more time with our kids. Running a bike shop was an amazing way to get to know this community, and we both feel blessed for the few successful years we had.
Until then, we’re selling all our accessories at 25% off – locks, helmets, bags, seats, etc. New bikes, while they last, will be $20-30 off, depending on model. We still have a ton of project bikes – if you are in the market to fix something up yourself, we have so many to choose from, and at reasonable prices.
Thanks for all the support – we hate to leave Gloucester without a bike shop, but we’re on to a new chapter in our lives. We’ll keep our website – sometimes we’ll still fix up used bikes and sell them on the side. We also will finally have time to work on some bike-related initiatives for kids here in Glouecster. We’ll see you around!”

Thanks!
KT

President of Beauty ~ Film-in-Progress by Henry Ferrini

In 2014 Lester Young will have been gone 55 years, yet this swinging star shines brightly in the film-in-progress. In the film, Sonny Rollins calls Lester “god”, and a god he was for many players who paid their dues at mid-Century. The four-minute trailer includes interviews with Sonny Rollins, Harry Belafonte, Wayne Shorter, B.B. King, Lee Konitz, Joe Lovano, George Wein, David Amram, Amiri Baraka, Junior Mance, and Gunther Schuller. Collecting these interviews has been an ongoing process for about two years. Here are some pictures from the two-year journey that resulted in this trailer.

As a longtime documentary veteran, my approach uses contemporary places combined with archival film, interviews and music to evoke our shared history. In President of Beauty: The Life and Times of Lester Young, the music and America’s troubled social history combine to evoke a sense of this much-misunderstood American genius.

Andrew Clark Joins The Dave Sag’s Blues Party This Thursday @ The Rhumb Line 8:30-11:30 9.25.2014

Dave Sag's
Dave Sag’s

We’re calling in a hazmat crew this week to clean up the mess that’s gonna be created out of the arrival of that famous Tootin’ Torquemada of the Tenor: Mr. Andrew Clark. This guy really knows how to do it. He sings, he chortles, he squeaks out the most amazing renditions of vintage R&B with his own battery of weapons of mass deconstruction. You’ll see. This coming on the heels of the most amazing night last week when the Three Stooges of the Blues poked my eyes out . What a night!

andy clark
AC will be yanking in the amazing Mr. Mike DiBari to play gootar and perhaps sing a few, too. My personal favorite woodchopper, Mr. Forrest Padgett, will be flailing away on the skins. And I, Salmon DaveSag, will be helping out as much as I can. So, don’t be a cube, rube, go ape! Seeya there!

Special Guest: CHICK MARSTON!

1968: Howard Marston, Jr. (a.k.a. “Chicklet”) seated with his parents in
resistance to the SSS and the U.S. involvement in Viet Nam.
When I first met Chick Marston, I was a young teenager.
My friends had told me I had to “see this guy play guitar”.
A gang of us rode in Jon Pope’s van to his house in Rockport.
Pope wanted to sell him a gorgeous metal-flake blue Fender
Stratocaster. Only thing was, Chick had never touched an
electric guitar in his entire life! I watched while he fumbled
all over the thing and wondered what all the hoopla was about.
But it wasn’t long after that I got to hear him play his nineteen
thirty-something Martin and simply sat in awe. And, soon after
that, he was making national news, courageously refusing
induction into the Army and its gross, immoral war – his beloved
and highly intelligent father and mother by his side all the way.
He was my hero. Our hero. I wonder how many local residents
know about this little chunk of American History. You want an
interesting read? Check the link below this paragraph. But
meanwhile, it is my honor to have “Chicklet” Marston as musical
guest at the Rhumb Line this Wednesday night. We have a total
blast every single time we play together. I see no reason for that
to change now… not after all these years. ~ Fly

Who Needs Ice?

Cape Ann Youth Hockey, along with some folks named the Boston Bruins, pulled off a fantastic event yesterday afternoon….all in the name of the Open Door Food Pantry.  The Boston Bruins Street Brigade Clinic gave about 50 kids the opportunity to participate in some street hockey games, meet Blades (the Bruins mascot), and receive gifts from the Boston Bruins.  In return, Cape Ann Youth Hockey and the Bruins simply asked that participants make a donation to the incredibly worthy Open Door Food Pantry.  A win-win!

Another example of great things happening on any given day within our community!

A huge thanks to all of those involved!  It is never too late to make a donation! Please consider.

Pet of the Week- Butters

butters2

Yep…Butters is my name. I’m guessing the folks who gave me this name did so because when I meet you, I am capable of pouring on the charm to make you melt like butter in my paw. I am a handsome fellow with a soft purr. I love sunny spots for napping and fish tanks for gazing. I am more on the mellow side. I guess the best way to put it is that I was born to lounge on the cough…not running on the track! I love attention and I promise, I am a great listener. You could tell me all about your day or the dream you had last night and I promise I’ll soak up every word!

butters1

I am eager to settle down and start my new life with you so please don’t delay and come see me soon! I’m at Cape Ann Animal Aid’s Christopher Cutler Rich Animal Shelter at 4 Paws Lane in Gloucester. Visit www.capeannanimalaid.org for more information about me and my kitty friends.
