Mike is bringing in the cavalry in the form of Mr.George McCann, Chuck’s brother, and the mainstay in James Montgomery’s band, to whoop it up on guitar. Mr. Forrest “Frosty” Padgett will be sweating profusely trying to get here on time to keep time, on the drums, that is. And I’ll be there, too!

Thanks for the Learning Op, Dave Moore!

If you listened to the most recent podcast or read Marty Luster’s post entitled, “Thank You, Dave” then you already know that we were all so happy to receive some postcards, maps, and currency from one of the most faithful and kind FOBs we have…Dave Moore!

Sunday’s Podcast

Marty’s “Thank You, Dave!”

After other contributors took their share of Dave’s gifts, I was lucky enough to secure the rest to bring to my students.  On Monday morning I shared the items with my class.  We admired the gorgeous postcards and were struck by their beauty, we learned a bit about the Won and its worth in comparison to our American dollars, and we studied the tourism maps to learn more about daily life in South Korea.  Dave’s gifts gave me the opportunity to share some maps of Asia with the class, to discuss time zones, and to, of course, revisit how to write “Thank You” notes.

David’s gifts are now on the shelf in our large geography area and many students have sat independently and looked through the cards…several had fun sorting them by natural landscapes, architecture, food, etc.  They have also tried to recreate the scenes found on the Won.

My students were incredibly grateful that someone so far away would think to share items with them and are making the most of the learning opportunity.

Some of you have asked to see some of the postcards so I took the liberty of photographing several….along with some of Dave’s other gifts and the classroom materials that we are now using along with them.

One act of kindness can go a long way.  So, that having been said, Thank You again to Dave and Kim Moore!

Fred Bodin gives the Kodiak Bear Family sculpture a “bear hug” during a special preview on the grounds of the Chris Williams sculpture studio in Essex, MA. I am 6’1″ tall, and males of this species of bear grow to over 10′ tall when standing on their hind legs. The tree the bear family is climbing is 17′ high. The Kodiak bear is to scale! Kodiak, or brown bears, are named after an island of the same name in Alaska.

13th Annual Wine Tasting and Auction at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum

Len Burgess submits-

IT WAS A BIG SUCCESS FRIDAY NIGHT… at the13th Annual Wine Tasting and Auction at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum. What an event! Over forty donations from local businesses, artists, and friends went in the silent auction. Another eight items went in the live auction handled superbly by Essex auctioneer Michael March. All of this was accompanied by a wine tasting organized by Chebacco Market and goodies from Tim Hopkins Catering and Lark Fine Foods. It was gratifying to see many familiar faces and seemingly just as many new faces with all having a great time. We are looking forward to next year’s event already!  –Lee Spence

The Cape Ann Theatre Collaborative presents

an irreverent parody of Maxwell Anderson’s 1954 Broadway play and Oscar winning film,

The Bad Seed

A perfect way to celebrate Halloween!

Anderson explores the theme of Nature vs. Nurture. Enter one Rhoda Penmark; a young girl so precious and sweet, every parent’s dream…

or IS SHE?!

Bad_Seed2

Anderson’s 1954 script borrows from the tragedy Medea, while CAT’s production upends tragedy into comedy with the Italian theatre’s Comedia dell’arte tradition, “lazzi” which roughly translates to “funny bits!” This production is loaded.

Come find out just how “sweet” this Bad Seed is!

The Bad Seed is a wildly inappropriate, side-splitting comic romp, yet very PG-13.

Howl this Halloween silly!

Come by and bust a gut laughing!

The Bad Seed is presented at the Gloucester Stage Company, 267 E. Main St. Seven shows only, Preview Performance 10/16, opening Friday, 10/17 running through Saturday 10/25.

Gordon Goetemann Artist Talk

Sunday, October 19, 7:00 PM

Free to the public

The Cultural Center at Rocky Neck, 6 Wonson Street, Gloucester. MA

Gloucester, MA—The Rocky Neck Art Colony hosts an evening with Gordon Goetemann, artist and long time Rocky Neck resident, at the Cultural Center on Wonson St, Sunday, October 19, at 7:00 PM.

Many people here in Gloucester and on the East coast are familiar with the work Gordon Goetemann has produced and exhibited locally but very few have any knowledge of the Minnesota paintings executed over a span of forty years. Many of these works will be shown and discussed at this special talk on the heels of his recent exhibition at the Cultural Center. Taken together as a body of work, Goetemann talks about the role nature has played in the formation of his values and the content of his art as well as some innate characteristics of his work such as, a micro/macro sense of scale and the dichotomy of an illusory space and the facts of a flat picture plane.

Goetemann constantly affirms that he is a landscape painter, and more specifically, that he is a NORTHERN landscape painter. He talks about how his northern-European, Germanic heritage has informed his temperament, feelings and modes of expression. As he often says,” As an artist I have led two lives and worn many hats”.

This event is free to the public; donations to support the work of the art colony are always gratefully received.

Sunday morning Discovery Channel News was at Ocean Alliance filming a story about SnotBot, the organization’s new drone. The drone was created by a group of Olin College of Engineering students, under the direction of Professor Drew Bennet, in the College’s robotics lab.

“SnotBot will be used to collect DNA, bacteria, viruses and stress hormones from whale blows. The team also tested SnotShot, a machine that makes a simulated whale blow (with the capacity to simulate different blow types) on demand—a testing tool that will actually help the scientists in the field collect a control sample.

The SnotBot drone works something like this: “as SnotBot flies out to a whale that is approximately 300m from the research vessel, it hovers over a whale and the whale repeatedly blows onto a collection device. After the sample is collected and brought back to the RV Odyssey, the data is used to help interpret an animal’s state of heath through the analysis of bacteria, viruses, DNA, and stress hormones recovered from the whale’s blow.”

REVIEWS:

“Anyone who has been lucky enough to hear Mr. Krasinski in performance knows his skill at presenting the essence and power of a film.”

“It was remarkable and seamless, and yes—no modern action movie could outdo it.

In fact, I’ll go so far as to say it was live theater…It was as if Krasinski became one with the elements”

“During the applause and encores, you gestured to the hall’s organ – I’m sure it was, in turn, bowing to you in appreciation for having being played so dexterously”
