King Chemo and I
I’ve met people who fear Chemotherapy, and I hope they never have to get it. Cancer patients undergoing this therapy react to it in different ways, some badly. Chemo or a different therapy can help rid you of your cancer.
My experience as a (non-medically) trained patient has been a good one at the Oncology Clinic on the 4th floor of Addison Gilbert Hospital in Gloucester. When I arrived yesterday morning, I was seated in a Lazy Boy type chair with a view of the Annisquam River and the outer harbor, provided with the morning paper, up to date magazine, a cable TV remote, and earbuds. The intravenous connection was made, freshly brewed coffee delivered, and I studied the breakfast menu. If the timing is right, I get lunch too. I’d bring my laptop or tablet, but time goes by quickly with so many things do, and no pain whatsoever.
Why am I happy to be treated here for cancer? Most importantly, it will prolong my life. The above amenities are welcome, but the staff is key: “We want to make your experience here as pleasant as possible,” they say. And they do.
A few hours later, I’m home expecting fatigue and the dreaded side effects. After 5 treatments, I’m not tired enough to nap, and go ahead with my everyday life, just a little slower. As I said above, this is MY experience with King Chemo, and so far, we’re getting along just fine.

Tutoring: Please remember as the year continues and the novelty wears off for your students, all teachers are available at least one afternoon a week after school for any extra help. Our first line of intervention would be to see the teacher after school for a more detailed explanation and understanding of the subject matter. The National Honor Society offers help in tutoring any day after school and we also have lists available of outside resources for any parent who is interested in tutoring for their child. We are all settling in for the next 8 months and assistance may look bleak for your student so I just wanted to remind you of our resources.

Be a part of something uniquely Gloucester!!
Erik Dombrowski pulls out a narrow victory over 2 time Oarmaster Len Robertson and first year contestant Dylan Morrissey in last weeks’ Oarmaster’s Cup solo race.
Last Saturday 6 hardy Gloucestermen braved the rain and the 1-3/4 mile course from Maritime Gloucester out around Ten Pound Island and back to complete the Oarmaster Cup race. In the first heat Peter Parsons (2 year contestant) and Billy Edmonds pushed Dylan Morrissey (1/2 of the August Int Men’s Team) to an extremely fast and powerful finish. The second heat provided even more drama with our youngest contestant Tyler Edmonds (1/2 of the August Int Junior’s Team) staying with Erik Dombrowski and 2 time Oarmaster Len Robertson to the 1/2 way point with Len leading the whole way. But, in the home stretch after taking advantage of a few course corrections and benefitting from the tight competition in the heat, Erik was able to glide to a victory and edge out Dylan’s time for the win! All of us at the IDRC are especially thankful for our start/chase crew who make these races possible including Damon Cummings, Joe Novello, Alex Thomas, Geno Mondello, Janelle Dombrowski, and the folks at Maritime Gloucester.

Dear Joey,

Cape Ann Masons’ Open House
Saturday, October 18, 2014
Once again, the Gloucester Masonic Lodge is hosting an Open House, known also as “Square and Compasses Day,” this coming Saturday, from 9 AM until 3 PM. If you’ve ever wondered who the Freemasons are, whether they are the descendants of the Knights Templars, or what the inside of their building looks like, here’s your chance to find out. The event is held semiannually to help the public gain a better understanding of what Freemasonry is, and the positive impact that it has on its members, their families, and community. Members will provide tours of the building, talk about Freemasonry’s history, discuss its rituals, signs, and symbols, and explain what they do.
The Lodge, known to its members as the Tyrian-Ashler-Acacia Lodge reflecting the former names of three Lodges which are now one, is located at 27 Eastern Avenue in Gloucester. Officers and members of the Lodge will be present to welcome visitors and prospective members alike. Come and join us and see the many different items from around the world as well as local items not previously seen by the public, pulled from the dusty safe deposit box. Paul Revere and his silver work, items of antiquity from the 1770’s and 1800’s, gavels made from the wood of the USS Constitution, and from King Solomon’s Temple in Jerusalem. Gordon Gravelese, Master of The Tyrian-Ashler-Acacia Lodge said, “Gloucester’s Lodge has the distinction of being one of the oldest Masonic lodges in North America and will be displaying many of these items for our open house. For men looking for ways to give back to their community and world, while enjoying the benefits of a first-rate fraternal organization, Masonry is a great place to look.”
Freemasons trace their roots to the stonemason guilds that built Europe’s cathedrals and castles during the early part of the last millennium. As construction of these buildings declined, they began accepting members from outside their trade. These new members, influenced by the “Age of Enlightenment,” transformed the organization from a group for builders to one focused on developing the character of its members. Freemasonry was formally organized in London, England in 1717. In 1733 it was formally organized in Massachusetts, making it the oldest Masonic group in the Western Hemisphere,
and the third oldest in the world.
Freemasonry, the world’s oldest and largest fraternity, seeks to bring together men of every country, religion, race, background, and opinion in order to develop the bonds of friendship between them. Through a large variety of North American Masonic philanthropies, approximately $3,000,000 is given to charity every day, 70% of which benefits the general public. During its symbolic initiation ceremony, members are encouraged to value high principles, ethics, and morals and to live their lives accordingly. By “making good men better,” Freemasonry positively benefits its members, their families and local communities. Freemasonry in Massachusetts is comprised of 32,000 members in more than 230 different lodges throughout the Commonwealth.
Please join us on Saturday for more information, refreshments and a tour, or visit http://www.massfreemasonry.org.
Captain Joe and Grandma Felicia’s Wedding June 11, 1938
Thank you to the person who brought this down the dock for me. Sorry I didn’t get your name.
Ron Gilson writes in-
Good morning Joey:
Over the years I have refrained from commenting on various interesting community posts on your blog. Who’s interested in an old man’s perspective?
However, today’s wedding story on your blog represents not only a detailed account of a prominent Italian commuity wedding, but more importantly, to me, it is a detailed slice of our all important fishing community history.
In 1938, all the up and coming leaders of the Italian community fishing fleet were listed as principals in this wedding. They were the future players about to write Gloucester fishing history. The Curcuru’s, Ciaramitaro’s, Branceleone’s, Strescino’s, D’Amico’s, Calamo’s, Novello’s, Orlando’s, to name a few, were all in attendance. It was a wedding spectacular!
Ten years later, Capt. Joe Ciaramitaro, in his highligher Benjamin C., would lead the fleet in the redfishing game, along with Capt. Sam Nicastro in his F/V Felicia; Capt. Chris Cecilio in his F/V Mary and Josephine; Capt. Rico Strescino in his family owned F/V Balilla and later in the Boston vessel Agatha and Patricia; the Brancaleone brothers in their family vessels Joseph & Lucia and St. Victoria; the Novello’s in their new Bonaventure and the Calomo and D’Amico families in their highline seiner, Ida & Joseph.
These Italian vessels and their crews and many others played a major role in the prominence of Gloucester’s fishing production in that era. It will never happen again, and this wave of Italian-American immigrants should never be forgotten. It was an unforgettable time in our city’s history!

Report Monarch Sightings Here!
More Monarch sightings reported on Cape Ann by GMG readers over the past several days, October 14th and 15th!
Maggis Rosa submits this photo from The Scientist Magazine, which was their Image of the Day and was shot by Luna Sin Estrellas at El Rosario Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, where the butterflies are arriving earlier than usual and in greater numbers than last year.
To the reader who sent the above photo, I unfortunately accidentally deleted the email. Please forgive and please let us know your name and where the photo was taken. Thank you!
Ed Note: Nancy Dudley writes, “The photo in the post w/o a caption was at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum. We are seeing a couple a day this week. Thanks! I am looking for the milkweed seeds I got from you to plant in my marsh soon!”
The Monarchs are back! Cape Ann GMG FOBs are continuing to report their Monarch sightings.
After taking a break during the rain of last week (butterfly’s wings don’t work very well in foul weather), the Monarchs are again moving through our region. Check the comment section to see all the recent sightings in our community. The above photo was taken yesterday, Monday, October 6th on Eastern Point. The photo below was shot last week, before the rain’s onset.
Monarch in Mid-Flight and New England Asters
Tip ~ This morning I ran into my friend Maggie and her husband who had just rescued a Monarch from the middle of the road. Butterfly wings don’t work very well in cool temperatures. If you find a Monarch in a seemingly quiet and weakened state, it could quite possibly simply be cold. Place the butterfly in a sheltered and sunny spot and it may very well revive!
* * *
In 1975, in Angangueo, at the time when the butterflies winter grounds were first located by Mexican citizen Catalina Aguado and her American husband Ken Brugger, they not only discovered billions roosting on the limbs of the oyamel fir trees but also millions quietly at rest on the forest floor. Thinking that the butterflies were dead, some members of the discovery group brought the butterflies back to their homes. Later in the day, after the butterfly’s flight muscles had warmed, they awoke and began to fly. Today at the butterfly biosphere reserves it is against the rules to pick up or touch a sleeping butterfly.
In Sunday’s podcast (September 21st), Joey made the super suggestion to create a place where GMG readers can report their Monarch butterfly sightings. I’ll repost this post every night for the next week or so. Please report any sightings to the comment section of this post, that way we can keep all sightings in one collective spot. You can send in a photo capture if you’d like, too.
Today as I was leaving our home, around noon time, I spotted a Monarch in our garden in East Gloucester. Let us know what you see. Thank you!
