What’s Happening at GHS 10/15/14

Any parent interested in their own log on and account for our Naviance Family Connection on line website may call their child’s Guidance Counselor for log on access to assist your students in the College search and application process.

Common Application Workshops will be taking place in the Library technology room on October 23rd and November 6th for any students who would like to complete the application with the assistance of their Guidance Counselor. These workshops will begin promptly at 2:15 and last until the process is completed. Please remind your seniors that these are available and is a great way to check the application process off your list!

The Adams Scholarship recipients have been identified by the Department of Secondary Education and notices to these superb students have been mailed. Congratulations to all who have received this Scholarship! If you have any questions regarding the application process after you review the information please do not hesitate to contact your student’s guidance counselor.

Tutoring: Please remember as the year continues and the novelty wears off for your students, all teachers are available at least one afternoon a week after school for any extra help. Our first line of intervention would be to see the teacher after school for a more detailed explanation and understanding of the subject matter. The National Honor Society offers help in tutoring any day after school and we also have lists available of outside resources for any parent who is interested in tutoring for their child. We are all settling in for the next 8 months and assistance may look bleak for your student so I just wanted to remind you of our resources.

Year End Membership Meeting

Thursday, October 23rd, 6 PM

The International Dory Racing Committee will be holding our annual year end organizational meeting at the Sawyer Free Library Friends Meeting Room to welcome interested new board members as well as discuss our 2015 schedule.  All members are encouraged to attend, express their ideas for the organization and take a more active role in the future direction of the IDRC.

Erik Dombrowski pulls out a narrow victory over 2 time Oarmaster Len Robertson and first year contestant Dylan Morrissey in last weeks’ Oarmaster’s Cup solo race.

Last Saturday 6 hardy Gloucestermen braved the rain and the 1-3/4 mile course from Maritime Gloucester  out around Ten Pound Island and back to complete the Oarmaster Cup race.  In the first heat Peter Parsons (2 year contestant) and Billy Edmonds pushed Dylan Morrissey (1/2 of the August Int Men’s Team) to an extremely fast and powerful finish.  The second heat provided even more drama with our youngest contestant Tyler Edmonds (1/2 of the August Int Junior’s Team) staying with Erik Dombrowski and 2 time Oarmaster Len Robertson to the 1/2 way point with Len leading the whole way.  But, in the home stretch after taking advantage of a few course corrections and benefitting from the tight competition in the heat, Erik was able to glide to a victory and edge out Dylan’s time for the win!  All of us at the IDRC are especially thankful for our start/chase crew who make these races possible including Damon Cummings, Joe Novello, Alex Thomas, Geno Mondello, Janelle Dombrowski, and the folks at Maritime Gloucester.

Please join us for The Gloucester Dog Park’s 1^st Annual Dog Photo Shoot and Halloween Costume Contest! On Sunday afternoon, Oct 26th from 12-4:00 PM we will be taking a photo of your favorites dog (or dogs) for a $10.00 donation each. Dogs do not have to been in costume to get their picture taken. The high quality digital image will be emailed to your address later on in the evening. For the same $10.00 donation, you will be entered into the Gloucester Dog Park’s Halloween Costume Contest! City Council Vice President Sefatia Romeo Theken has graciously agreed to be the celebrity judge this year. Prize categories will include Best Large Dog Costume, Best Small Dog Costume, Best Gloucester “Themed” Costume and Honorable Mention. Prizes have been graciously donated by Animal Krackers, Petco, Essex Bird Shop & Pet Supply and K-9 Kuts. All pictures will be posted to the Gloucester Dog Park’s web site later on that evening and the winners will be announced on the web site that evening as well. Please be sure to bring your own dog Halloween costume, as there will be only a limited number of costumes on hand. There will be booths from Quinn’s Canine Cafe and the Cape Ann Animal Aid present with their awesome prize wheel. Cape Ann Animal Aid will also be bringing some cute shelter pups up for adoption that day to pet and play around with. We will be located in Tino’s Corner of The Gloucester Dog Park (special needs section) which will be closed for use that afternoon. All the proceeds from the Gloucester Dog Park Photo Shoot and Halloween Costume Contest will go to support the Gloucester Dog Park. A generous donor has graciously donated solar lights to the Gloucester Dog Park, we just need to raise some extra funds to get the lights installed. These solar lights will greatly increase the parks useable hours in the upcoming winter months and help us to be a truly “green” park. Cape Ann Masons’ Open House
Saturday, October 18, 2014

Once again, the Gloucester Masonic Lodge is hosting an Open House, known also as “Square and Compasses Day,” this coming Saturday, from 9 AM until 3 PM.  If you’ve ever wondered who the Freemasons are, whether they are the descendants of the Knights Templars, or what the inside of their building looks like, here’s your chance to find out.  The event is held semiannually to help the public gain a better understanding of what Freemasonry is, and the positive impact that it has on its members, their families, and community.  Members will provide tours of the building, talk about Freemasonry’s history, discuss its rituals, signs, and symbols, and explain what they do.
 
The Lodge, known to its members as the Tyrian-Ashler-Acacia Lodge reflecting the former names of three Lodges which are now one, is located at 27 Eastern Avenue in Gloucester.  Officers and members of the Lodge will be present to welcome visitors and prospective members alike.  Come and join us and see the many different items from around the world as well as local items not previously seen by the public, pulled from the dusty safe deposit box. Paul Revere and his silver work, items of antiquity from the 1770’s and 1800’s, gavels made from the wood of the USS Constitution, and from King Solomon’s Temple in Jerusalem. Gordon Gravelese, Master of The Tyrian-Ashler-Acacia Lodge said, “Gloucester’s Lodge has the distinction of being one of the oldest Masonic lodges in North America and will be displaying many of these items for our open house.  For men looking for ways to give back to their community and world, while enjoying the benefits of a first-rate fraternal organization, Masonry is a great place to look.”

Freemasons trace their roots to the stonemason guilds that built Europe’s cathedrals and castles during the early part of the last millennium.  As construction of these buildings declined, they began accepting members from outside their trade.  These new members, influenced by the “Age of Enlightenment,” transformed the organization from a group for builders to one focused on developing the character of its members.  Freemasonry was formally organized in London, England in 1717. In 1733 it was formally organized in Massachusetts, making it the oldest Masonic group in the Western Hemisphere,
and the third oldest in the world.
