Please join the Sawyer Free Library on Saturday, November 9 at 2:30 pm for an author talk with Melissa Ludtke, who will be discussing her book, Locker Room Talk: A Woman’s Struggle to Get Inside, her gripping account of being at the core of this globally covered case that churned up ugly prejudices about the place of women in sports. Joining her in the conversation will be fellow local author of The Tigerbelles, Aime Card.

The event is being presented with the Bookstore of Gloucester who will be selling copies of Melissa’s book. No registration is required. If you have questions, please call the Library at 978-325-5500.

About Locker Room Talk:

“Locker Room Talk: A Woman’s Struggle to Get Inside,” to be published by Rutgers University Press, Melissa Ludtke describes what it was like to be the 26-year old woman swept up by the societal hurricane spinning around her lawsuit against Major League Baseball. Living in the bulls-eye of sexist commentary exacted a high emotional toll on her, as those who wanted to protect the well-fortified bastion of male privilege argued against Ludtke’s legal claim, often by mocking her. To them, she was a terrifying symbol of women’s liberation during a time of revolutionary change in women’s lives. Still, Melissa’s legal case carved pathways which generations of girls followed.

About the Author:

In her award-winning journalism career, Melissa Ludtke reported at Sports Illustrated, was a correspondent at Time, and the editor of Nieman Reports at Harvard University’s Nieman Foundation for Journalism. Her lifelong engagement with issues revolving around girls and women’s lives led her to write two books, “On Our Own: Unmarried Motherhood in America,” and “Touching Home in China: in search of missing girlhoods.” In “Locker Room Talk: A Woman’s Struggle to Get Inside,” her upcoming memoir, Melissa revisits her federal lawsuit, Ludtke v. Kuhn, which in 1978 secured equal access for women sports reporters. This meant women could interview players, coaches and the manager in the locker room, as male reporters had done for decades. She is a graduate of Wellesley College and lives in Cambridge, MA with her college-aged daughter, Maya.

With Summer slamming to a close and it being cold and raw out we’re gonna do a roundup of the best French Onion Soup around town, probably including all of Cape Ann.

Criteria which I think we can all agree on- served in a proper French Onion soup crock, the cheese be the right mix and crusted over the top, the broth be hearty and most importantly, flavor.

Join Paul Cary Goldberg & Antony Ohman at their new solo shows — Saturday November 9th from 4-6pm .

“Paul Cary Goldberg’s street images from the 1970’s alongside his contemporary farm portraits; and Antony Ohman’s black and white series exploring the relationship of images in sequence define this show.

Goldberg has titled his part I Wish That I Could Show You Everything; work spanning 1975-2020. In selecting images, he has pulled from an extensive body of work, choosing intimate portraits of farmers to actions of children just hanging out on the street to the poignant portraits of the hand of his late wife, Lee.

Ohman titles his part in the exhibition I Spy / A Bird’s Eye — a play on the guessing game we all know so well coupled with the notion of a bird’s eye view. He leads us on a search where the viewer’s eye is met by the various captures of a bird’s eye.”

BankGloucester Hosts a Public Viewing for Local Artist John Marshall in Gloucester, November 5– January 3, 2024

BankGloucester is hosting a public viewing for local artist John Marshall starting on Tuesday, November 5th and continuing through Friday, January 3rd in BankGloucester’s main lobby at 160 Main Street in Gloucester. This public showing is a great opportunity to personally view and enjoy some of John’s inspired and unique pieces. A public reception will be held on Saturday, December 7th from 10 AM to 12 PM at our Gloucester Office giving guests a chance to meet the artist and ask questions.

John is a self-taught artist and painter based in Danvers, MA, and a proud father of two wonderful daughters. His work draws inspiration from the rich legacy of Cape Ann School artists and the Boston Guild, whose styles and techniques have profoundly influenced him. He began his journey as a painter 10 years ago.

For John, painting is about embracing life, dedication, and joy. Passion and energy drive everything he pursues, shaping each piece he creates. His work reflects his experiences surfing, snowboarding, and skateboarding throughout New England, capturing the region’s natural beauty.

He strives for his paintings to transcend time, unbound by any single category or style. Each piece reflects his personal memories and vision, infused with his own experiences. For him, art is a celebration of all the senses—an expression of imagination, creativity, and a genuine freedom from critique.
