Alicia Unleashed OR Unapologetically Alicia- Which do you prefer?

After a few too many adult beverages Joey may or may not come to regret his fateful decision of asking me to become an official GMG contributor. My role as we discussed and maybe to your dismay, will be to give the straight dope without filter as I see things (oh boy) You may agree with me or you may vehemently disagree with me, but know that what I put on these pages will be straight from my heart without excuses.

As far as the poll goes we are looking for my new username. Please chime in and whichever one wins I’ll be using going forward.

If there are any topics you would like to discuss on this crazy adventure feel free to leave a comment below and follow me on twitter @ali4416

Sista Felicia’s St. Joseph Pasta Day 2015 From Beginning To End!

Yesterday was my dear friend Mo Klopp first time making homemade past. Abbey Mathews’ captured Mo’s perfect 10 point toss, of her very first pasta dough into the bowl at the rolling station!

Thank you All…yesterday was simply amazing!

Last night I went to bed feeling incredibly blessed and proud of my amazing team of family and friends who successfully pulled off another massive production of making over 100 pounds of “Homemade St. Joseph Pasta.” All 110 lbs of Semolina flour was lovingly handcrafted into delicate cuts of fettuccini! Just prior to production yesterday everyone gathered around my kitchens island for a short tutorial of the pasta making process. It’s vital to keep the flow of production running smoothly. Each step of the production must be done correctly to insure the consistency of a high quality final product.   Every job starting with dough maker’s assistants to dough runners and pasta hangers were performed with precision! Yesterday’s pasta event was an amazing team effort from start to finish. Additional thanks to my husband St. Barry for his support and behind scene list of chores, my twins Amanda and BJ and awesome mother Pat, and brother Joey for their support and help setting up for yesterday and assistance in production, blogging, and live Streaming! Many thanks to my dear friends and owners of Nobel Electric, Steve and Dee Nobel, and Rick Moore and  Donna Ardizzoni, owners of Circle Consultants, for their assistance in getting our crashed internet back up and working for the live stream. Special thanks to my incredibly talented Creative director James Eves at Cape Ann Giclee for designing the first ever Sista Felicia Apparel! The “Sista Felicia Kitchen” aprons were perfectly “Felicitized! Also a huge shout out and big thank you to GMG Contributor and friend Marty Luster for spending the afternoon photographing yesterday’s event for cookbook #3. Special thanks and to Erich Archer, Executive Director at Cape Ann TV  and his photographer George for filing a portion of yesterday to air on Cape Ann TV soon!

Since 1993, the Massachusetts Cultural Council Commonwealth Awards have been given every two years and celebrate achievement in arts and culture. Specifically,

“The Commonwealth Awards shine a spotlight on the extraordinary contributions made by the arts, sciences, and humanities to education, economic vitality, and quality of life in communities across the state.”

See the full list here. Yo-Yo Ma (1997) and David McCullough (1999) are two notable past recipients. Prior city or town wins include:

Somerville (1993)

Northampton (1995, same year as Aerosmith)

Boston via Clara Wainwright (1999 First Night, Quilts—including Gloucester)

Springfield (1999 Library and Museums)

Cambridge (2003)

Worcester (2009, same year as Peabody Essex Museum)

Haverhill (2011)

Barnstable (2013)

Gloucester (2015) and Plymouth (2015)

Maritime Gloucester, Cape Ann Museum, Art Haven, Gloucester Lyceum & Sawyer Free Library, Rocky Neck Art Colony, Gloucester Stage, Cape Ann Cinema, HarborWalk, the City Archives, the partners of the two Cultural Districts, and more all mentioned this special day.

Joey and guests summed up the honor on Podcast 120: “Without having the narrow blinders of us living in this community, can you really think of another community (other than Boston and one that’s our size)…Where else would have as vibrant an arts community?” Well, nearly that quote. Hmmm. Nominate GMG for 2016 in media?

Congratulations to the other 2015 winners:

Malcolm Rogers, Beverly Morgan Welch, Town of Plymouth, Pittsfield Barrington Stage Co, Highland Street Foundation (see Free Fun Fridays GMG post), Barr Foundation, Mayor Martin J. Walsh, Artsboston, WBUR, WGBY, Holyoke Enchanted Circle Theater, Amherst Hitchcock Center for the Environment, Cambridge Science Festival, Boston Conservatory, and the Worcester Art Museum

Worlds Collide

Do you know what’s awesome?  Going out in this great little community to celebrate the happiness of two friends and, in doing so, spending a fantastic night out with such a wide variety of acquaintances…that your head kind of spins with giddiness.

I taught a 9-hour class to my grown-up students yesterday, went home to have a quick dinner with my husband and boys, and then went back out to celebrate a great rite of passage with some friends.

While incredibly happy for them…by the end of the evening I also felt quite happy for me.  In that little establishment…within a few hours time…I was lucky enough to have laughs (and some tears…because sometimes that happens) with some old friends, new friends, blog friends, hockey friends, bar friends, father’s friends, husband’s friends…and even several members of my husband’s family. Worlds collide…and I’m a lucky girl to have so many people whom I consider wonderful and special…and randomly happened to see in one evening. Ok…enough sappy.

But…in all seriousness….   Do you know what else is awesome?

People who don’t want to exclusively talk about themselves, but are eagerly and honestly looking to learn and engage to find out more about others.  Random, I realize. However, true.  While I love to talk and solidly lie on the extrovert side of the ball field, I am also passionate about meeting people and learning about what makes them different from everyone else…what they love….what they hope to do…and what they consider special.   So…refreshing (and kind of endearing) to spend some time last night listening to someone who likes to do the same.  I got such a kick out of a newish friend by listening to him chat up people (including myself) to learn more about them.  Maybe I’m off the mark….maybe he’s writing a book. But I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt and think…kudos for being a good guy who might agree that your life grows more wonderful by meeting and knowing as many diverse and interesting people as possible.

I was asked a few times last night, “So what do you write about on the blog?” and….while I’m not always sure how to answer that….today I’ll say, “I write about things that make me think or make me smile.”  I did a lot of both last night.

Happy Sunday, friends.

The Manchester Historical Museum will be presenting their next lecture on Tuesday, March10 at the Sacred Heart Parish Hall (62 School Street, Manchester). The program will be “At Your Service – The People Who Made Gracious Living Possible” presented by Nancy Coffey from Beverly Farms. For the past several years Nancy has been researching the lives of North Shore servants through oral histories, photographs and archival research.  Come and hear her stories about the local girls who cleaned molasses from the toilets in the spring, the butler who over-ruled the man of the house, the laundress who stepped in when the cook quit, and the mop boy who got a big surprise in the laundry room. Nancy will also bring along two of the devices used to summon servants at the turn of the 20th century. 6:30 refreshments, 7:00 program.  MHM members free, nonmembers $10. Please RSVP by March 9. Phone: 978-526-7230 or email info@manchesterhistoricalmuseum.org .

Breaking News!

A male King Eider is currently on the backshore. Two gentlemen from Carlisle were kind enough to allow me to look through their scope and Michelle Barton reports that it was there on Friday, too. The eider can be seen while standing at the small cleared space on the side of the road, across from The Elks at Bass Rocks. The King Eider is a spectacularly colored bird and is too far offshore for the capabilities of my 200mm lens but here is a beautiful photo from Wiki Commons Media. King Eiders forage on seabeds up to 82 feet deep and I imagine that is what the diving eider spotted this morning was doing. Happy Birding!
