To date or not to date? That is the question.
Kids do not come with an instruction manual and it does not get any easier when they are teenagers! Teenagers who want to date! I would like to say to my daughter, you can date when you are 30! (actually I do) I guess it’s a part of growing up, the whole dating and crush thing in high school. We’ve all been there but when it comes to your own kids frankly it just sucks.
It’s no secret that the world we live in today is NOT the same world from even 15 years ago.
Social media and texting just came into play when I graduated high school so I cannot imagine having the outlets these kids have today. Texting, Facebook, Instagram, email etc. the list goes on and on. Have you read what these kids are texting each other when they are dating? Have you seen the pictures these kids are posting when they are dating? Trust me I’ve seen my fair share and more than I want.
What I have seen in my time as a mother is the kids who are dating have parents that are older, as in 50’s and 60’s with a teenager. It’s the younger parents I see that are more hesitant to let their kids date. Why do you think that is? Is it because the older parents are out of touch with social media as opposed to the younger parents who are also on social media and can monitor their kids? There may be no real answer as to what age you should let your teenager date but there are definitely some factors we have today that were not there some time ago.

A Half Milestone
Today all systems were go: 33°F, daylight, dry pavement, and a craving to walk some distance without my cane. Janet took the cane at the front door and we walked at a medium pace to my favorite animal sculpture park. After stopping to take a few photos, we walked back home. Total distance: One half mile using no cane or other walking aid.
As the journey started thirteen months ago, I couldn’t roll onto my side in a hospital bed. I graduated to a wheelchair, then a walker, followed by a cane, and now two legs. I’m currently scouting around for a longer full–milestone trail. (Photo by Janet).

James Gordon Quote of the Week from Greg Bover
“It’s not that some people have willpower and some don’t…It’s that some people are ready to change, and some aren’t.”
James S. Gordon, MD (194?- )
A New York native and the son and grandson of physicians, Gordon graduated from Harvard in the sixties and served as a volunteer doctor in the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco and at the Woodstock music festival. He developed programs at the National Institutes of Mental Health that explored alternative approaches to chronic disease and is himself a registered acupuncturist. In the 1990’s he founded the Center for Mind-Body Medicine and is a leader in the study of integrating mental and physical health, including nutrition and trauma relief. His most recent work has focused on educating patients to care for themselves and combatting depression through a holistic program of integrated mental and spiritual work. I could find no evidence that he is related to the police commissioner of Gotham.

GORGEOUS JUVENILE SNOW GOOSE IN GLOUCESTER!
Many thanks to Michelle Barton for alerting us about the Snow Goose at Good Harbor Beach. Michelle and Chris Anderson’s son, Atticus, has a superb eye for identifying rare and unusual birds that are migrating through our region. It was the Barton-Anderson Family who first alerted us to the Snowy Owl in our neighborhood this past January.*
The juvenile Snow Goose and flock of Canadian Geese are foraging for grasses along the water’s edge. They yank and tug vigorously at the sea grass roots until dislodging.

Snow Geese mate for life, breeding during the summer months in the Arctic Tundra. Their annual journey from summer breeding grounds to winter home is a roundtrip of more than 5,000 miles, and they are oftentimes traveling at speeds of up to 50mph! There are four migratory corridors, or flyways, in North America. From west to east, they are the Pacific, Central, Mississippi, and Atlantic. Gloucester is a special place where we are centrally located in the Atlantic flyway.
Thanks so much again Michelle and Atticus for the Snow Goose alert!* See comment below from Chris Anderson
