My Pollinator Garden Program Free and Open to the Public!
Please join me for a special event on Thursday evening at 7pm at the Tewksbury Public Library where I will be giving my Pollinator Garden program. This event is free and open to the general public. I hope to see you there!
I am currently booking programs for 2016-2017 and would be delighted to present to your club, library, school, and private or public event. See the Programs Page of my website and feel free to contact me at kimsmithdesigns@hotmail.com with any questions.
This past week I presented a screening and Q&A of Life Story of the Black Swallowtail Butterfly film and program to the Ipswich Town and Country Garden Club. Marion Frost, two time past President and six time Program Chair for the club had some very kind things to say about my program. Marion grew up in Gloucester!
Hi Kim,
How often does something you’ve looked forward to for a long time live up to your expectations? Not often. But last night at Ebsco your presentation, including your film, your comments and your Q&A were just about perfect in my book! I’ll smile as I remember the evening.
I liked having the trailer for the monarch film first. You gave the group something to look forward to. Jesse Cook’s music is an excellent choice, I think. I drum to his music often. I was pleased with the questions and with your answers. It’s obvious you’ve done a lot of research. The way you answered questions made the group comfortable. Very nice! And the film. What can I say. I’d seen clips, but seeing the whole thing was something I won’t forget. I especially liked your reference to other butterflies and your comparison of the swallowtail with the monarch. Liv’s voice was just right for the commentary!
I know from experience that the presenter is the harshest critic of the presentation. I hope you were feeling pleased with your work last night. I’d be happy to repeat the whole evening!
I’m wishing you well with the editing.
All the best to you,
Mim

FISHERMAN’S STATUE WAS NEVER CONTROVERSIAL!
For the latest on the proposed David Black sculpture controversy, read Bing McGilvray’s letter in today’s Gloucester Daily Times. The letter is not yet posted online as of 10am this morning, but you can read it on the opinion page in the paper or here:
“Today’s Editorial, City’s arts policy must define room for public input, leads off with the insinuation that every new work of public art is always met with some degree of negativity, followed by this statement: “Indeed, reports indicate that some local folks didn’t immediately warm even to sculptor Leonard Craske’s 1923 Man at the Wheel…” What reports are you citing here? Whatever the source, this is absolutely untrue.” READ COMPLETE TEXT HERE: Fisherman’s Statue Was Never Controversial!
Please attend the forum to begin the process of developing a city wide arts policy, which will be held on May 14th. The exact time to be announced shortly. This is an important discussion and I look forward to seeing you there!

Red Sox Opening Day is in the Books
Wow. I’m not the only one to speak these words in the past 12 hours, but I’ll say it anyway….you couldn’t have wished for a better Opening Day….on so many different levels. Well…unless there was a ring ceremony to boot. Book, alas, there wasn’t. Maybe next April?
A glorious mid 70 degree day. A team returning home after a more than decent season opening road trip. Bob Kraft, Bill Belichick, and Tom Brady. Pete Frates and a Red Sox contract. Martin Richard’s family. Mookie Betts, Mookie Betts, more Mookie Betts, and David Ortiz. Some other pretty phenomenal players. A 9-4 victory over the Nationals. Lots of laughs, cheering, and warm fuzzies.
Dare I say it is going to be a great season.

A GMG Tradition Unlike Any Other- The Annual Friends Don’t Let Friends Buy Ugly Red Mulch Post
I think we’re going on 5 or 6 years now and at some point you’d think I wouldn’t have to remind folks but at the first signs of the palletloads of brown and (icky) red mulch showing up at Shaws I’m here to save the design challenged folks of the world that just might not understand how trashy the red mulch looks. For those of you that might need a refresher I’ll dial up the way back machine to posts from 2012 and 2013-
RED MULCH IS HIDDEOUS– GET THE DARK BROWN MULCH, IT’S 1000% MORE CLASSY LOOKING
Orange Mulch Is A Fail
Posted on June 19, 2013
Someone needs to clue me in on how you could go to the landscape supply joint and make the conscious decision to buy orange mulch over the nice dark brown (almost black) compost mulch. I’ll go dark brown mulch all day long over toxic waste neon orange mulch. It’s just way more aesthetically pleasing. I don’t know a whole lot about landscape supply costs. Maybe they pay people who opt for the neon orange mulch to take it away from their landscape supply yard. I can’t think of a single other reason someone would choose it over the classy dark brown. They actually dye it that hideous orange color. You gotta be a savage to get the orange stuff, no? What am I missing here?
NOTHING SAYS CLASSY LIKE…
