seARTS celebrates 8th Annual Art Loan @Bass Rocks Show at Opening Reception May 28, 2015

The Society for the Encouragement of the Arts (seARTS) proudly announces its eighth year in partnership with the Bass Rocks Golf Club for the Annual seARTS Art Loan Program. This year’s show presents works by 19 regional artists at its opening reception on May 28th. The opening provides a chance for seARTS members along with the general public to view the works and meet the artists in this wonderful and picturesque setting.

The program is a year-round exhibition, showing and selling the work, and since its inception artists have sold nearly $15,000 worth of artwork through the program, netting more than $10,000 to the artists in the show. The fresh and bold work of the 2015 show balances a body of returning artists with new, introducing the space to completely new genres of work.

Among the newly enrolled artists are Charlie Carroll, Matt Cegelis, Anne Marie Crotty, Janel Houton, Eva-Lynn Loy and Marny Williams. Returning to the show from previous years are Katherine Coakley, Anne Cowman, Rob Diebboll, Susan Guest-McPhail, Mary Forte Hayes, Leslie Heffron, Michael Oleksiw, Ron Pruett, Patricia Yarborough Reed, Judy Robinson- Cox, Ruth Schneider, Deb Schradieck and Marilyn Swift.

Responsible for the show’s thoughtful and lively selection of art is this year’s jury, consisting of Manchester resident and Rockport gallery owner Bruce Johnson, photographer Paul Cary Goldberg, auctioneer and art/antiques dealer Michael March and Central Street Gallery director Alison Rowell. The jury will award honors that will be announced at the event. Awards are sponsored by Manchester-by-the-Sea’s Nor’east Frameworks, Artemis Custom Framing of Gloucester, and Hershey Frame Shop of Rockport.

Jurors Bruce Johnson, Michael March and Alison Rowell will hold a panel discussion about the art work and their selection process, followed by a question and answer session with the audience. (Paul Cary Goldberg is unable to attend.) seARTS is pleased to welcome art historian Judith Curtis as panel moderator. Judith, the author of Rocky Neck Art Colony, 1850-1950, will also give a talk: “For the Love of Light; Cape Ann as a Painter’s Destination.”

Fishtown Horribles Parade Committee is hosting a fundraiser Saturday May 30th at O’Malley school

The Fishtown Horribles Parade Committee is hosting a fundraiser Saturday May 30th at O’Malley school parking lot from 9am to 2pm.

The Touch a Truck event has been a great success for us and we hope to continue this streak.  All the proceeds go directly to the operational cost of the July 3rd Parade.

There will also be a Chowderfest with some local restaurants participating.

We are a nonprofit organization that needs the community’s help in our quest to put on an exciting Parade each year.

Fun Facts About Gloucester’s Breakwater

Because I am a research geek, I present to you some fun facts about Gloucester’s breakwater.

This 2,250 foot breakwater was built by the Army Corps of Engineers aided by the Rockport Granite Company between 1894 – 1905.

Its official name is the Dog Bar Breakwater.

It was built partly because after Eastern Point Lighthouse was lit in 1832, ships continued to run aground on Dog Bar Reef. Residents also wanted to keep rough water out of the harbor during storms.

The substructure is a rubble hill made from grout, broken granite and the refuse from quarries, averaging 100 feet wide at the base and gradually narrowing to about 30 feet. 

The rubble was dumped overboard in a line and allowed to “settle” for several years until it was ready for the top structure, or “superstructure.”

The superstructure is composed of seven tiers of cut granite, placed on top of each other in pyramid-like fashion.

Each of the top capstones weights at least ten tons.

Further extension of the breakwater was considered, but officials at the time could not agree whether it was necessary, or would have adverse affects on the harbor.

Cost at the time was $300,000 to $500,000; now it would cost an estimated 14 million.

The breakwater was described in a 1905 Boston Globe article as a “delightful promenade for the people.”

Dog Bar Breakwater is now part of a 53-acre nature preserve owned by the Massachusetts Audubon Society. Monarch butterflies and seabirds can be spotted there.  

Nearby the breakwater, towards the Eastern Point lighthouse, you can find “Mother Ann’s Rock”—a rock formation similar to New Hampshire’s Old Man of the Mountain. You can find a great post about Mother Ann’s Rock from E.J. LeFavour on GMG, just put the words “Mother Ann” into the Search Box, and you will see it about three posts down.

Did you know? A short loop trail through a nearby “forest“ is located across from a cul-de-sac named Aileen Terrace. It’s public and you can walk it if you can find it!

On Thursday, Patrick Thorpe, President of the Gloucester Rotary was on hand with fellow Rotarians to present Seacoast Nursing and Rehabilitation with a check for $1,000.  The Gloucester Rotary donated the funds to aid in the renovation of the living room for the short term residents. 
Seacoast Executive Director, Stephen Doyle accepted the donation, and expressed his and the staff’s gratitude in allowing Seacoast to improve the stay of their patients.

Wishing all good luck with Gloucester Bingo.  I have two rows, maybe I will win.

    Gloucester Bingo    Come downtown, support our local small businesses and have a bit of fun.   You may have heard that Boston created “Boston Bingo” as a means to jump start their local economy…well, we are having some fun with “Go Fish/Gloucester”!  We thought this could be a great promotion for Gloucester too and we would love for you to participate with us.   We are creating a “bingo” sheet with 20 or so general categories where one or more blocks could be satisfied by shopping/dining in your business.    An example of a few categories are:

 

 

  • Snag a sparkly piece of jewelry
  •   Upcycle something (buy something used)
  • Enjoy a drink with a friend
  •   Grab a sweet treat, pastry or cookie
  •   Visit a downtown bookstore
  • Buy a Glosta themed Tshirt or item
  •    Purchase a Mother’s Day gift
  • Ahoy! Buy something nautical

The plan is for this promotion to run from April 22 through May 22 .   On April 22 there will be 6,500 inserts in the Gloucester Daily Times and we are planning a media/social media blitz to get the word out.   Once complete there will be a few  locations to drop off their bingo sheet and be entered in two different raffles.  A winning card will enter players in a raffle with prizes such as having lunch with Mayor Sefatia, a trip for two on the Ardelle, a Maritime Gloucester membership and we are working on other prizes from local businesses.  If you would like to donate a prize, please let us know.       Submitting a card with one line completed in any direction counts as one entry into a raffle, while a card that is completely filled out will see the player entered into the grand prize raffle.  Winners drawn from the raffle will have their choice of all the prizes available at that point with grand prize winners having first pick.
We truly think this is a fun and creative way for engaging our customers and thanking them for supporting their local businesses.
